The Canberra Racing Club will conduct two races on the Acton (synthetic) Track at its next race meeting on Tuesday 1st November, the 104.7 Melbourne Cup Day race meeting.

The Maiden Handicap and Class 3 Handicap will be run as the first two races on the program at the amended distance of 1206 metres. Race fields on the Acton Track will be restricted to 11 starters and to 12 on the grass course proper.

The Canberra Racing Club successfully staged the last two races on Crimsafe Security Canberra Cup Day on the Acton (synthetic) Track when the course proper became unsafe for racing.

The programming of a further two races on the Acton Track on Melbourne Cup Day continues the phasing in process of synthetic track racing at Thoroughbred Park, home of the Canberra Racing Club.

The Club proposes to redevelop the course proper in 2005/2006 and during the redevelopment period, synthetic track racing will be a feature of Canberra racing.

Jockey Ray Silburn's Appeal

{SCPinterestShare href=https://www.virtualformguide.com/racing-news/canberra/12523--sp-1639676355.html layout=standard image= desc=It is in times of pain and suffering that the human spirit is truly tested. The road to recovery can... size=small}

It is in times of pain and suffering that the human spirit is truly tested. The road to recovery can be long and hard, but when aided by the generous support of the community, an individual can regain their hope in life.

Well known and respected local Jockey Ray Silburn suffered severe injuries when he fell from his mount during race three at Canberra on Friday 25 February 2005: the first day of the Sayers Black Opal Stakes Carnival. After being stabilised at Canberra Hospital, Ray was flown to Sydney late on the Friday night, where he remains in a stable condition in the spinal unit of the Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick with serious spinal cord damage. Given only a 10% chance of ever walking again, the

38-year-old husband and father of two boys faces a long hospital stay in Sydney, followed by years of rehabilitation and many dramatic lifestyle changes.

In order to make this traumatic experience slightly less demanding on the Silburn family and to soften the impact, the Canberra Racing Club, Thoroughbred Park, in association with the wider racing industry and local community, is undertaking a campaign to raise funds for Ray, his wife Dana and their boys.

Several major events have been organised for the Ray Silburn Appeal, as well as

on-going initiatives to raise awareness and support for this worthy cause. Please find an outline of these events below:

Golf Day – Tuesday 19 April

Held simultaneously at two separate venues: Gungahlin Lakes and Yass Golf Course, this joint initiative between the Canberra Racing Club and L.J. To book, call Dave Aumann on 0407289101.

We are also seeking volunteers to assist in the running of the day, as well as Sponsors for each hole. If you are able to contribute please contact Dave Aumann on the above number.

Gala Dinner and Auction – Friday 24 June

A night dedicated to all things sporting! Held at Thoroughbred Park, the evening will be attended by a number of local and national sporting identities from all codes of sport. The MC for the night will be WIN Television Sports Presenter Phil Small, who will also conduct live interviews with three leading sportspeople on the night. A silent auction will be held, as well as other premier items of sporting memorabilia and prizes being auctioned live. Tickets are available for tables of ten, or individuals. The Gala Dinner and Auction is guaranteed to be an unforgettable night.

The Canberra Racing Club strongly encourages any company or individual who would like to assist in the organisation of, or donation to the above fundraising events to contact the Club on (02) 6241 388. Every single contribution, no matter how small, will go a long way to helping Ray Silburn and his family pull through their recent tribulations.

RACE 1:MAIDEN PLATE            1000M

HANDY CROWN and PHOTOGRAPH were slow to begin. When questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of TEX CALA trainer Mr S. Vella stated that at the mare’s previous start when first up from a spell at Gundagai on 8 August 2004 it had been unsuited by a heavy track and a wide barrier draw. Today a favourable barrier, an improved racing surface and natural improvement from its first-up run were all factors that contributed to its improved performance. Post-race veterinary examinations of FOOTPRINTS and HANDY CROWN, which tailed off, did not detect any abnormalities. A post-race veterinary examination of LILLIANA, which was obliged to race very wide throughout and then weakened noticeably after straightening found that horse to be lame in front. Trainer Mrs B. Joseph advised LILLIANA would now be retired to stud and on that assurance no further action was taken.

THERE IS NO MOORE and JEIR CREEK were slow to begin. After the 800 metres BIGGINS was hampered when THERE IS NO MOORE hung out. A post-race veterinary examination of THERE IS NO MOORE, which hung out throughout and raced to the outside fence after straightening, did not detect any abnormalities. Trainer Mr M. Barton was advised that THERE IS NO MOORE must barrier trial to the Stewards’ satisfaction before it would be permitted to race again. FRENCH CADET bled during the event and will now incur a mandatory three-month ban from racing under AR53A. A post-race veterinary examination of BUNTER MILAD, which weakened over the concluding stages, did not detect any abnormalities. On return to scale M. A. Cahill (DOUGHBOY HILL) reported that, in his opinion, the gelding was not totally free in its action. A post-race veterinary examination of DOUGHBOY HILL found that horse to have a poor post-race recovery. A veterinary examination of IMPLIED found that gelding to be acutely lame in the near foreleg. Trainer Mrs C. Newcombe was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before IMPLIED would be permitted to race again.

NOT FUSSY then had difficulty obtaining completely clear running until after the 100 metres. Approaching the winning post DANCARAMA was steadied when crowded to the inside of NOT FUSSY which had improved into restricted room to the inside of LACRISTI. Approaching the winning post ROCKLEY UNICORN was steadied away from the heels of LACRISTI, which shifted out. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted on BARTOSS, particularly in the early stages, M. Hanneybel stated that he was instructed to race in a forward position if there was little pace in the event and, after beginning well, he rode his mount along but it failed to show its normal early speed. He added that he was then caught three wide but he felt that BARTOSS was travelling well. When the pace of the event steadied near the 900 metres he elected to ride forward and attempt to find the rail but as he rode forward LACRISTI, which was overracing, and DANCARAMA improved further to his inside and he was unable to clear them. He added that in the circumstances he was pleased with the performance of BARTOSS and his explanations were noted. When questioned N. Beriman (NOT FUSSY) stated that approaching the home turn she had established running to the inside of FIRE AT WILL and was therefore obliged to attempt a run to the inside of ROCKLEY UNICORN after straightening. She added that ROCKLEY UNICORN shifted in near the 300 metres resulting in her being steadied away from the heels of PRINCE PAREE, and NOT FUSSY was then held up and unable to obtain clear running until after the 100 metres. Her explanations were noted.

Prior to correct weight Stewards considered a submission from App. W. Pearson that GEEMTEE be declared a non-runner. The evidence found that just prior to the start being effected GEEMTEE got its head down, missed the start and lost considerable ground (10L). In all the circumstances GEEMTEE was declared a runner and trainer Mr J. McGregor was advised that a warning would now be placed on the barrier manners of GEEMTEE. Over the concluding stages PARAPORT was hampered when crowded between MIGHTY SUAVE and SOUTHERN AIR, which shifted out on two occasions while under pressure.

Dryden was advised that a warning would be placed on RANSOM TIME. Shortly after the start LA VENTANA was checked and lost ground when crowded between RUBITBABE and GROOVER’S MATE, which shifted out. After the 800 metres MAGIC MARTY, whilst overracing, shifted in, bumped the rail heavily and then shifted out, hampering GROOVER’S MATE and KELRULE. KELRULE was obliged to race wide throughout. After the 100 metres App. N. Beriman (RUBITBABE) accidentally dropped her whip. A post-race veterinary examination of LA VENTANA did not detect any abnormalities.

It was well worth the trip to Canberra for talented Sydney apprentice Joe Fujii, this afternoon.

Fujii teamed up with trainer Albert Stapleford to bring home Bennetts Green to victory in the $35,000 Aristocrat Camarena Quality Handicap (1000m).

This was Fujii's 12th ride on the horse and together they have notched an impressive record of six wins and six placings.

Bennetts Green and Mukareena led together at the turn and it was a real ding dong battle to the line all the way down the straight,  but Bennetts Green put in a gutsy performance to hold off the equally brave Mukareena and the fast finishing Aggravation (Ron Stewart).

Bennetts Green won by a short neck from Aggravation with Mukareena (Jamie Whitney) in third place a further neck away.

They ran 57.86 for the journey, the final 600m in 34.75.

Bennetts Green by Shovog from Zaiglo, was bred by Willow Grove Stud and sold at the Magic Millions Adelaide Sales for $42,000 in 2002, to Stapleford.

RACE 2: MAIDEN PLATE            1000M

CHUNKY BELLA, which was fractious in the barriers, was withdrawn by Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 12.28 p.m. Prior to correct weight being declared, Stewards ordered all moneys invested on CHUNKY BELLA be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 12.28 p.m. be subject to deductions of 2¢ win, 3¢ place and 4¢ quinella in the dollar on the face value of the ticket. Trainer Mrs L. Bundy was advised that CHUNKY BELLA must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it would be permitted to race again. HOLY DAY, which was slightly slow to begin, was then steadied when crowded between CRYSTALAZAR, which shifted out, and SAVVY LASS. SAVVY LASS raced wide throughout and then weakened noticeably over the concluding stages. FOOTPRINTS and CRYSTALAZAR raced greenly in the straight whilst under pressure. When questioned M. Hanneybel (HOLY DAY) stated that his mount refused to stretch out in the early stages, hung in throughout the event and had been disappointing with its failure to run on after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination of HOLY DAY did not detect any abnormalities. Trainer Mrs M. Hanneybel subsequently reported that HOLY DAY had lacerations to both nearside legs. When questioned regarding the performance of SAVVY LASS M. Bell stated that from a wide barrier his mount was forced to race wide throughout and, when pressured after straightening, he believed the filly struck an uneven section of the track. He then became concerned with SAVVY LASS’s action and for this reason he did not place the filly under any undue pressure over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of SAVVY LASS found that horse to be lame in the near hind. Trainer Mrs B. Joseph advised Stewards that SAVVY LASS would now be sent for a spell. On this assurance no further action was taken again. A post-race veterinary examination of TANUKI, which weakened over the concluding stages, found that horse to have an elevated heart rate.

RECKLESS FANTASY, which was following, was checked in consequence. When questioned regarding the performance of SWEET VIBES, R. Brewer stated that his mount did not travel well at any stage and, despite striking severe interference near the 1000 metres, it had been extremely disappointing with it failure to run on. A post-race veterinary examination of SWEET VIBES did not detect any abnormalities. Mr S. Hawtin representing trainer Mr G. P. Robl’s licence to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 17 August 2004 and to expire on Monday 23 August 2004, on which day he may ride. Wiggins (PABLO DIABLO), placed second, lodged an objection against OLYMPIC TWIST being declared the winner, alleging interference in the first 200 metres of the event. The evidence before the Stewards found that shortly after the start PABLO DIABLO suffered minor interference when OLYMPIC TWIST shifted in and near the 900 metres was steadied slightly away from the heels of NOOKS, which shifted out away from OLYMPIC TWIST. As Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that, had this interference not occurred PABLO DIABLO would have beaten OLYMPIC TWIST to the line, the objection was dismissed. Approaching the 800 metres NOOKS, which was overracing, was checked and shifted out abruptly away from the heels of OLYMPIC TWIST (K. Sweeney), which shifted in when not clear. PABLO DIABLO, SIR RUSSKI, JUST AS BEAUTIFUL, ZANDES, LACRYMAJESTIC, EKATI and CAPTAIN AUBREY were all hampered to varying degrees as a result of this interference. At a subsequent inquiry into this incident rider K. Sweeney pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a). His licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 3 August 2004 and to expire on Monday 16 August 2004, on which day he may ride. A post-race veterinary examination of JUST AS BEAUTIFUL did not detect any abnormalities.

KING GAB was late arriving on course due to a float breakdown. It was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. FOREVER AMBER and VEECEE were crowded on jumping between DANE LUCKY and SCALDED. Approaching the 1200 metres INANON was steadied away from the heels of KING GAB after receiving a bump from SKY WIZARD, racing to its inside. DANE LUCKY raced wide throughout. JUST A BLOKE and VEECEE laid in noticeably in the straight. When questioned regarding the performance of DANE LUCKY rider M. A. Cahill stated that from a wider barrier he was obliged to race wide throughout and added that, after a tough run, his mount was under pressure from the 600 metres. He further stated that, after straightening, his mount had not found the line and had been disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination of DANE LUCKY did not detect any abnormalities. Trainer Mr R. Boljun advised Stewards that DANE LUCKY would now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of SNOWSLIP, which weakened noticeably over the concluding stages, found that horse to be dehydrated and to have a moderately elevated heart rate.

After the 1000 metres RACIN’ RALPH raced up onto the heels of FLASH ‘N’ THUNDER and shifted out abruptly. When questioned regarding the performance of FLASH ‘N’ THUNDER G. Buckley stated that, when runners to his inside improved quickly after the start, he elected to settle back in the field to avoid being caught excessively wide. He added that he followed the eventual winner KING OF THE BOUNTY to the 500 metres but, when placed under pressure after straightening, his mount disappointed with its failure to find the line. A post-race veterinary examination of FLASH ‘N’ THUNDER found that horse to have a laceration to the near offside pastern and to be suffering from mild respiratory distress.

Canberra jockey Ray Silburn is being flown to Sydney tonight after a horror fall at Thoroughbred Park earlier on today.

"He's not very good at all and they are going to fly him to Sydney tonight." said Manager Stephen Wilson.

"We expect to hear from the Doctors in Sydney once they have had a chance to see him when he arrives."

Silburn was conscious when he was taken to hospital immediately after the fall but is believed to have suffered spinal injuries.

The full extent of those injuries won't be known until Doctors in Sydney have examined him.

Silburn is one of the mainstay riders of Canberra and is well liked and respected in the industry.

He was riding the Tom Wilson trained Caza Ladron, when the horse appeared to suffer a massive bleeding attack, collapsing and dying on track.

At the same time COURT LION was checked when awkwardly placed close to the heels of TRAMSTOPPER and ANTCLIFF. JUST A BLOKE, which was following, was hampered in consequence. Stewards were unable to attribute blame to any one rider and all riders were advised to exercise more care. A post-race veterinary examination of TRISTY’S ROSE, which weakened noticeably, detected a laceration to the off-hind pastern and to the front of the nearside hock.

SOLOMON was slow to begin and, shortly after the start, was steadied away from the heels of COPPERBILLY. MAR MAR raced wide until the 600 metres. MACHADO overraced in the middle stages of the event. After straightening MAR MAR shifted in to improve when DIK DIK rolled out and after the 200 metres MAR MAR was momentarily held up on the heels of ZANDES, which shifted in. When questioned regarding MAR MAR racing back in the field today rider M. A. Cahill stated that he was instructed to race in a forward position but, despite his urgings in the early stages of the event, MAR MAR was unable to cross runners to its inside and was therefore caught wide until approaching the 600 metres. After straightening he shifted in when DIK DIK rolled out in front of him and, after the 200 metres, he was momentarily held up when ZANDES shifted in. M. A. Cahill stated that, once clear after the 150 metres, MAR MAR found the line well.

RACE 7: CLASS TWO HANDICAP            1400M

DARK CHOCOLATE was slow to begin. KING OF ILLAWARRA and FLASH ‘N’ THUNDER raced wide until the 600 metres. When questioned regarding the performance of DARK CHOCOLATE rider M. A Cahill stated that his mount was slow to begin and was then crowded shortly after the start, resulting in the filly settling further back than he had anticipated. He added that his mount travelled well until straightening but when placed under pressure failed to find the line and, in his opinion, felt flat. Trainer Mr R. Boljun advised that DARK CHOCOLATE would now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of DARK CHOCOLATE did not detect any abnormality.

RACE 8: OPEN HANDICAP            1400M

For some distance approaching the 600 metres LORENZO was steadied when awkwardly placed close to the heels of ELMO CRUSHER and EXAMINE THE BOOKS. Stewards questioned J. Ford (RADIANT IMAGE), App. K. Parkin (NEVARA) and J. Whitney (SWING AND MIST) regarding the tactics adopted on their respective mounts and, in particular, their apparent lack of urgency to push forward in the middle stages of the event and attempt to take ground off the tearaway leader SERKELT. Both J. Ford and K. Parkin stated they were instructed to race in a forward position but not to bustle their mounts or take on the expected early leader SERKELT. J. Ford stated that he was unconcerned in the middle stages as he believed SERKELT was suspect over the 1400 metres having never travelled over this distance previously and both he and K. Parkin expected SERKELT to come back to the field. J. Whitney stated that he was instructed to be racing in fifth or sixth position and to attempt to obtain cover as the gelding has been overracing recently. He also expressed the view that the pace of today’s event had been genuine and SERKELT would in all likelihood weaken over the concluding stages. After considering all available evidence and taking into consideration the sectional times of the race Stewards noted all explanations but did advise J. Whitney (SWING AND MIST) that in their opinion and with the benefit of hindsight he may have erred in electing to obtain cover behind NEVARA near the 700 metres where in the Stewards’ opinion an opportunity had existed for him to allow that gelding to stride forward.

A strong field is lining up for the Group III $200,000 Canberra Sayers Black Opal (1200m) after nominations were received this morning.

Al Samer is set for his debut start for new trainer Tim Martin. Al Samer dead heated for third in the Magic Million 2YO when trained by Graeme Rogerson, went for a spell and then was transferred to Martin's stable.

"It all depends on the barrier  draw if he starts or not ,"s said Martin.

"If he does, Hugh Bowman will ride him."

Other Sydney horses due to head down include Billy Prain's Wrong Call, Graeme Rogerson's Dower, Anthony Cummings' Replicator and Zed Alert.

In-form trainer Kevin Moses has nominated Power Of Destiny, who won impressively last preparation at Randwick over 1200m.

The Danehill colt returned from a break but finished last of nine runners at Randwick on February 12 after having to stand in the gates for some time, when there was a delay at the start, resulting in him being slow away.

Jockey Brent Stanley stated that he had to ride the horse along in the early stages after being slow away.
The pace then steadied mid-race but developed into a sprint home and Power Of Destiny was unable to make any appreciable ground.

The colt is much better than that and should be able to put in a much improved performance on Saturday if he runs.

GLENLEE then hung out from the 800 metres and ran to the outside fence on straightening. A post-race veterinary examination of GLENLEE found that horse to have slight abrasions to the right side of the mouth. Trainer Mrs B.
