POWER CHASE then tailed off and made up some ground after straightening. K. Sweeney could offer no tangible explanation for the poor performance of POWER CHASE and added that the colt seemed reluctant to stretch out in the early stages of the event. G. Buckley was subsequently suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Thursday 22 January 2004 and to expire on Thursday 29 January 2004, on which day he may ride. After the 100 metres REBEL DUEL and NADGEE came together resulting in NADGEE becoming unbalanced. When questioned regarding the performance of MISS MACHINE R. Freeman stated that her mount overraced in the early stages and, after straightening, made an unusual respiratory noise and she became concerned with the horse’s action and, for that reason, she did not place MISS MACHINE under any pressure over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination found MISS MACHINE to have a very elevated heart rate and to be in a very distressed condition. Trainer Mr M. Dale was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before MISS MACHINE would be permitted to race again.

RACE 5: TRANSITIONAL HANDICAP             1600M

Acting on a confirmed telephone call that MOST WANTED had an elevated temperature, it was withdrawn by Stewards at 11.52 a.m. Trainer Mr M. Petrovic undertook to supply a veterinary certificate in regard to MOST WANTED. Approaching the 1000 metres CORYTHUS was steadied away from the heels of EDGE OF THE STORM. EDGE OF THE STORM bled during the event and under the provisions of AR53A is now barred from racing for a period of three months. When questioned L. Price (KOSTA ZOFF) explained that after blundering making the crossing near the 1300 metres he allowed his mount to gradually shift away from the fence as he believed the gelding was better suited some three horses wide where the going was less shifting. He further stated that although EDGE OF THE STORM and SILVER BLISS improved through to his inside in the middle stages he believed that the tactics he adopted were in his mount’s best interests. SILVER BLISS and EDGE OF THE STORM raced tight over the concluding stages when EDGE OF THE STORM shifted in under pressure.

CANSPRINT shifted in noticeably under pressure at the concluding stages. When questioned on the performance of ALPHA CENTAURI K. Sweeney stated that his mount was able to obtain a leading position during the event but when SON OF TARA improved to his outside near the 1300 metres ALPHA CENTAURI commenced to overrace and refused to settle. He added that the fact the horse was first up from a spell and racing on a rain-affected track had contributed to his mount weakening over the concluding stages and it was his opinion that ALPHA CENTAURI would benefit from today’s race start. A veterinary examination of ALPHA CENTAURI revealed a poor post-race recovery.

Trainer Mr V. Miller was advised that AMISERE must barrier trial to the Stewards satisfaction before it would be permitted to race again. Approaching the 800 metres CANNYKIA was checked after it ran up onto the heels of COMMANDS NOTHING. Approaching the 200 metres SHREWD LAD was steadied and shifted out to improve when disappointed for a run to the inside of MARFORTUNE. When questioned on the performance of NAQIYAH, rider C. Reith stated that the filly had trialled and worked well prior to today’s event and, after beginning well, it travelled well in an advantageous position until straightening. He added that, when placed under pressure after straightening, NAQIYAH failed to respond and lost ground noticeably from the 300 metres. A veterinary examination of NAQIYAH found that horse to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G. Rogerson will be questioned regarding NAQIYAH’S condition in the days subsequent to the event.

RACE 3: YASS MAIDEN PLATE            1600M

DAMAH GEM was slow to begin. When questioned on the disappointing performance of EZE LA BELLE rider J. Whitney stated that his mount raced in a slightly more forward position as opposed to its previous start due to an inside barrier draw and it travelled well until approaching the 600 metres where it commenced to give ground. He further stated that it was his opinion the mare may not have been totally comfortable on today’s rain-affected going. A veterinary examination of EZE LA BELLE did not detect any abnormalities.

ZUM and WATCH THE TIME were slow to begin. Approaching the 800 metres GENERATOR struck the rail and became unbalanced when momentarily crowded to the inside of APPERTAIN. When questioned on the performance of SERKELT rider W. Pearson stated that he had been instructed to lead and after being slightly slow to begin he rode forward to clear runners to his inside and was able to find the rail approaching the 800 metres. He stated that he was mindful of the fact that the horse was up in weight and had had to be ridden hard early, so after obtaining the lead he endeavoured to steady the pace to attempt to give SERKELT a rest in the middle stages. He added that, when pressured after the 300 metres, his mount found little and made a respiratory noise after the 100 metres and he noticed the gelding had its tongue over the bit when pulling up. A post-race veterinary examination of SERKELT found that horse to have bled for the first time and as such it now suffers the embargoes of AR53A.

RACE 7: YASS CUP HANDICAP            1400M

Approaching the 100 metres GREIGACIOUS was steadied away from the heels of MAGIC PUZZLE, which shifted in abruptly. When questioned App. R. Bensley stated that he had been instructed to lead if possible on AMALFI’S REVENGE due to the horse being drawn wide on the track and also to take off from the 600 metres in an attempt to steal a break on the rest of the field. He added that he was unable to obtain the lead as THE HORSE JACK improved to his inside and this resulted in his mount refusing to settle and weakening noticeably over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of AMALFI’S REVENGE found that horse to have an elevated heart rate. When questioned on the improved performance of BANDARES trainer Ms T. Schmetzer stated that an increase in distance and a rain-affected track had been the key factors that led to today’s performance. She indicated that the stable had not supported BANDARES today.

1st: BANDARES 2nd: MAGIC PUZZLE 3rd: BABOUCHKE 4th: BEAT THE TIDE

RACE 8: CLASS ONE HANDICAP            1200M
