RACE 2: MAIDEN PLATE            1000M

CHUNKY BELLA, which was fractious in the barriers, was withdrawn by Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 12.28 p.m. Prior to correct weight being declared, Stewards ordered all moneys invested on CHUNKY BELLA be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 12.28 p.m. be subject to deductions of 2¢ win, 3¢ place and 4¢ quinella in the dollar on the face value of the ticket. Trainer Mrs L. Bundy was advised that CHUNKY BELLA must barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before it would be permitted to race again. HOLY DAY, which was slightly slow to begin, was then steadied when crowded between CRYSTALAZAR, which shifted out, and SAVVY LASS. SAVVY LASS raced wide throughout and then weakened noticeably over the concluding stages. FOOTPRINTS and CRYSTALAZAR raced greenly in the straight whilst under pressure. When questioned M. Hanneybel (HOLY DAY) stated that his mount refused to stretch out in the early stages, hung in throughout the event and had been disappointing with its failure to run on after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination of HOLY DAY did not detect any abnormalities. Trainer Mrs M. Hanneybel subsequently reported that HOLY DAY had lacerations to both nearside legs. When questioned regarding the performance of SAVVY LASS M. Bell stated that from a wide barrier his mount was forced to race wide throughout and, when pressured after straightening, he believed the filly struck an uneven section of the track. He then became concerned with SAVVY LASS’s action and for this reason he did not place the filly under any undue pressure over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of SAVVY LASS found that horse to be lame in the near hind. Trainer Mrs B. Joseph advised Stewards that SAVVY LASS would now be sent for a spell. On this assurance no further action was taken again. A post-race veterinary examination of TANUKI, which weakened over the concluding stages, found that horse to have an elevated heart rate.

Approaching the 1000 metres SWEET VIBES was severely checked when crowded to the inside of Bull’s Roar, which was carried inwards by Just A Bloke (A. Bloomfield) which was laying in. Bloomfield was issued with a severe reprimand and advised to make a greater effort to prevent his mounts from shifting in. After the 800 metres BUBBLE OR NOTHING, which was racing ungenerously, got its head up and lost ground when racing in restricted room to the inside of GARRETT. RECKLESS FANTASY, which was following, was checked in consequence. When questioned regarding the performance of SWEET VIBES, R. Brewer stated that his mount did not travel well at any stage and, despite striking severe interference near the 1000 metres, it had been extremely disappointing with it failure to run on. A post-race veterinary examination of SWEET VIBES did not detect any abnormalities. Mr S. Hawtin representing trainer Mr G. After the 900 metres ZEPMANU was checked when it raced up onto the heels of SELMA. MULLUMBIMBY shifted out significantly under pressure over the concluding stages and placed its rider at a distinct disadvantage. P. Robl (SELMA) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that after the 300 metres he did make insufficient effort to prevent his mount shifting out when insufficiently clear of DIAGON ALLEY, which was checked and lost the running to which it was entitled. P. Robl’s licence to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 17 August 2004 and to expire on Monday 23 August 2004, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty Stewards took into consideration P. Robl’s excellent race-riding record and the fact that he had not been suspended for approximately two years, during which time he had in excess of 1000 race rides.
