After straightening, SETO INFINITY was steadied away from the heels of GOLD BIRD (D. Langridge), which shifted out when not quite clear. Robl was advised to make a greater effort to prevent his mount from shifting in, in future. Approaching the 800 metres when the pace steadied ROMAN COMPOSER raced up onto the heels of LITTLE NELLIE and AMALFI’S REVENGE shifted out abruptly away from the heels of OVERALL PRINCE. A post-race veterinary examination of LITTLE NELLIE, which weakened over the concluding stages, did not detect any abnormalities.

RACE 4: SAYERS MAIDEN PLATE            1200M

When examined behind the barriers the club’s veterinary surgeon reported MARFORTUNE to be lame in the off foreleg and it was subsequently withdrawn by Stewards at 1.51 p.m. who ordered that all moneys invested on MARFORTUNE be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 1.51 p.m. be paid, less the deductions of 19¢ win, 16¢ place and 40¢ quinella in the dollar on the face value of the ticket. Trainer Mr J. Van Duren was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be produced before MARFORTUNE would be permitted to race again. Shortly after the start HEADSWELL was checked and lost ground when carried in across the heels of AIM TO FIRE by KISS MY FUJI, which in turn was taken in by PLACE TO BE. ARMADAY raced wide throughout. After the 800 metres MOSSBERG was hampered and carried wider on the track by PLACE TO BE, which shifted out whilst overracing. When questioned on the performance of BEFORE THE SHOW rider K. Sweeney stated that he settled back in the field in an endeavour to avoid racing wide and to prevent his mount from overracing. He added that his mount raced ungenerously and continually shifted away from runners to his inside in the middle stages of the event and then travelled well to the home turn where, once placed under pressure, it failed to find the line. A post-race veterinary examination of BEFORE THE SHOW found that horse to have an elevated heart rate.

Acting on a confirmed telephone call that BOLD TROUBADOR was unable to be loaded onto horse transport, it was withdrawn by Stewards at 10.18 a.m. NIPPALONG, which was fractious in the barriers, was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and passed fit to start. LUCKY GWEN dipped on jumping. KARA GEORGE began awkwardly. In the vicinity of the 700 metres SERKELT dipped noticeably. PLEASE hung out on the home turn and carried KARA GEORGE wider on the track. When questioned on the performance of PLEASE rider G. Buckley stated that his mount travelled well in the early stages but was inclined to lay out from the 600 metres particularly when placed under pressure. He added that it hung out on the home turn, failed to find the line and he then became concerned with the horse’s action over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of PLEASE found that horse to be lame in the near fore and off hind. Trainer Mr R. Davies was advised that a veterinary certificate of fitness must be provided before PLEASE would be permitted to race again.

Hanneybel (LANGUAGE) was found guilty of a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 300 metres he did permit his mount to shift in whilst riding it along when insufficiently clear of ZEDATETE, which was crowded, checked and lost running to which it was entitled. M. Hanneybel’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday 22 June 2004 and to expire on Sunday 4 July 2004, on which day he may ride.

Lye (LORENZO) was severely reprimanded under AR144 for failing to present herself at scale after finishing in fourth place. When questioned regarding the improved performance of TOP HOLE Trainer Mr A. Dykes could offer no tangible explanation other than it was the horse’s fourth run this time in and that the horse had benefited from recent racing. He added that he was quite satisfied with the gelding’s previous start at Canberra and said that TOP HOLE had worked well during the week. He was informed that, as TOP HOLE had now found form, the Stewards would expect the gelding to race with some consistency. Post-race veterinary examinations of KINGSTON SHORES and EXAMINE THE BOOKS did not detect any abnormalities.
