RACE 2: MAIDEN PLATE 1400M

Prior to correct weight being declared, Rider J. Morris made application for DEVILS RAINBOW to be declared a non-runner, as he believed it was being held by a barrier attendant as the field was released. The Stewards found that DEVILS RAINBOW had been fractious in the gates and had missed the start due to its own barrier manners and it was therefore declared a runner. DEVILS RAINBOW was slow to begin. Approaching the 1000 metres RUGGLES shifted out and carried MINOA (NZ) wider on the track, resulting in APOSTASY being hampered. TRINITY SONG was held up and unable to improve for a short distance near the 200 metres. A post race veterinary examination of ARISEN did not detect any abnormalities.

ZEE AND ME and SHAKIN IN SEATTLE were slow to begin. Shortly after the start SHREWD LAD shifted in crowding ROSE OF THE PINES and DISCO TOUCH. Near the 800 metres ROSE OF THE PINES, which was racing greenly, was checked when crowded between ZAKYNTHOS PRIEST and DISCO TOUCH, both of which shifted some ground. Approaching the 500 metres ROSE OF THE PINES was steadied away from the heels of ZAKYNTHOS PRIEST, which shifted out slightly. ROSE OF THE PINES made the home turn awkwardly, shifted out abruptly and carried ZEE AND ME and AMARYNTHIA wider on the track.

RACE 7: BURLEY GRIFFIN SPRINT OPEN QUALITY HANDICAP  1200M

Trainer Mr. R Boljun was fined $50 under LR35 for the late declaration of B Elissa as the rider of MISSILE SAM. KABLAMMO was slow to begin. C. Newitt explained he had been instructed not to go wide on KABLAMMO as the trainer feared being forced excessively wide on the home turn and also he did not want the gelding to be caught racing in what the trainer believed to be an inferior section of the track approximately 8 to 10 horses off the fence bearing in mind the big weight allotted to the gelding. He added that approaching the 200 metres he had the choice of runs to the inside and outside of JIVAGO and in keeping with his instructions he elected to shift inside where he was momentarily held up on the heels of INFLATION before securing an uninterrupted run to the line. He added after initially sprinting quickly he believed KABLAMMO then ground to the line and in his opinion was now looking for a longer distance. Trainer Mr. D Williams confirmed the instructions given and expressed satisfaction with C. Newitt’s ride on KABLAMMO although he felt with the benefit of hindsight he may have erred in shifting in near the 200 metres. The explanations were accepted.
