RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE            1400M

This race was delayed by approximately five minutes after DAMAH GEM shifted its nearside hind plate in the mounting yard, which required farrier attention. WEEKEND WONDER (J. BLISS MISS and COLUMBAN were slow to begin. Approaching the 1200 metres STAR VELLA was checked away from the heels of the riderless WEEKEND WONDER, which shifted wider on the track. KINGSTON SHORES, which was slightly slow to begin, was then crowded between STRATEN and NOTHIN’ ON. After the 1400 metres STRATEN was checked when crowded between EXAMINE THE BOOKS and SWING AND MIST (J. Scorse) which initially shifted in but was then taken in further by MACQUEEN (R. Silburn). Stewards advised J. Scorse to exercise more care and issued R. Silburn with a reprimand. Approaching the 150 metres ELMO CRUSHER and EXAMINE THE BOOKS bumped heavily. When questioned J. Scorse (SWING AND MIST) stated that he had been instructed to race in an off-pace position due to the apparent lack of pace in the event. He added that his mount overraced throughout and failed to find the line under its big weight. A post-race veterinary examination of SWING AND MIST found that horse to have an elevated heart rate.

Layt (SOUTHERN AIR) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that approaching the 1900 metres he did permit his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of POP CIRA which was checked and lost running to which it was entitled. A. Layt’s licence to ride in races was subsequently suspended for a period to commence on Wednesday 21 April 2004 and to expire on Wednesday 28 April 2004, on which day he may ride. In assessing penalty Stewards took into account A. Layt’s guilty plea and good recent riding record. When questioned on the performance of TAVERN P. Approaching the home turn AMBER LIQUID was held up and unable to improve when racing behind PRINCESS DANI and to the inside of INTEMPERATE.
