RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE            1600M

Stewards considered a request from Trainer Mr. R Boljun, to replace M Schmetzer as the rider of CAFU with J. Nisbet, due to a dispute between M Schmetzer and himself. Stewards agreed to the substitution but ruled that M Schmetzer would be entitled to a losing ride fee. Shortly after the start STAY ALL NIGHT was crowded between COLOUR THERAPY and APOSTASY. MILA GLEAM blundered over the 1300 metre crossing, which resulted in its rider becoming unbalanced. COLOUR THERAPY made the crossing near the 1300 metres awkwardly and lost ground. APOSTASY, which was following and over racing, checked away from the heels of COLOUR THERAPY.

 RACE 3: TRANSITIONAL HANDICAP            1600M

M Travers replaced S Pawsey (overweight) as the rider of TAVERN. Pawsey was subsequently fined the sum of $150 under AR120(b). SOUTHERN AIR was slow to begin. GO VOLARE raced wide throughout. G. Buckley (SOUTHERN AIR) explained he traveled in an advantageous position but when placed under pressure from the 700 metres the gelding failed to run on and in his opinion had disappointed. A veterinary examination of SOUTHERN AIR did not detect any abnormalities. When questioned, N Souquet (GO VOLARE), stated from a wide draw he was caught deep in the early stages and he therefore elected to push forward. He added when he went forward, runners to his inside improved and he was then posted wide throughout. He further stated the gelding struck a shifting patch of ground near the home turn and failed to find the line. A post race veterinary examination of GO VOLARE found it to have a mildly elevated heart rate.

RACE 4: CLASS TWO HANDICAP            1000M

Trainer Mr. B Howlett was reprimanded for the slightly late withdrawal of DUMARESQ. A. Bloomfield replaced M. Schmetzer (overweight) as the rider of COLDAZZ. At a subsequent inquiry M. Schmetzer pleaded guilty to charge under AR175 (a) in that he did weigh out without a girth in an attempt to deceive the Clerk of Scales and make the allotted weight. M. Schmetzer was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence on Sunday 11th April 2004 and to expire on Thursday 6th May 2004, on which day he may ride. AFFLICTION was slow to begin. An inquiry into the reason KING SIAM was checked near the 800 metres was adjourned to a date to be fixed, to allow J. Nisbet to be present.  Near the 300 metres KING SIAM collapsed after suffering a massive bleeding attack. It was subsequently euthenased. Rider J. Nisbet suffered an injury to the left shoulder and was stood down from his remaining rides. On return to scale, Mr. D. Bailey, the trainer of GOLD WORKS (third) lodged an objection against AFFLICTION (App W. Pearson) being declared the winner alleging interference after the 300 metres. The evidence revealed that after the 300 metres AFFLICTION shifted out abruptly when struck with the whip, making heavy contact with GOLD WORKS, causing GOLD WORKS to become unbalanced and lose some ground. After considering all evidence and taking into account the manner in which both horses went to the line, the Stewards could not be comfortably satisfied that had this interference not occurred GOLD WORKS would have beaten AFFLICTION to the line and the objection was therefore dismissed. As the Stewards were satisfied that Apprentice W. Pearson had reacted and attempted to straighten his mount as soon as possible, no direct action was taken against him.

Trainer Mr. G. Rogerson was fined the sum of $50 under AR141A for failing to notify a change of plates on GALWAY GREY (NZ). A. Bloomfield replaced J. Nisbet as the rider of KISEKI MEGAMI. While heading to the barriers AIM TO FIRE took charge of its rider and galloped a circuit of the course. It was withdrawn by Stewards at 2.57pm who ordered all monies invested on AIM TO FIRE be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 2.57pm be paid less deductions of 6 cents win, 7 cents place and 12 cents quinella on the face value of the ticket. UNCLE DORDY and RAYANUI were slow to begin. L. Lunn pleaded guilty to charge of careless riding under AR137(a) in that near the 1100 metres he did make insufficient effort to prevent SPECIAL IMPACT shifting in resulting in UNCLE DORDY being carried in across the running of BLISS MISS, which was checked. Lunn was suspended from riding in races for a period to expire on Tuesday 13th April 2004 on which day he may ride. Approaching the 800 metres SIMPSON DESERT was checked when it ran up onto the heels of BALLY TIGER (R. Stewart), which steadied after reaching the lead. Apprentice Stewart was advised to exercise more care. KISEKI MEGAMI raced wide throughout. Near the 700 metres SPECIAL IMPACT was awkwardly placed close to the heels of GALWAY GREY (NZ). STAR VELLA was held up and unable to improve behind KISEKI MEGAMI, which was weakening near the 200 metres. On return to scale App W. Pearson (COLUMBAN) weighed in 0.7 kilogram light and after calling for the bridle correct weight was achieved. Apprentice Pearson’s explanation for this short weight was accepted. Apprentice R. Stewart (BALLY TIGER), was severely reprimanded for failing to weigh in after finishing in fifth position.

DISCO TOUCH raced wide throughout and over raced in the early and middle stages. A post race veterinary examination of PRIME COLOUR found that horse to be stepping short in front. Stable representatives of Trainer Mr. G. Rogerson were advised a veterinary clearance would be required before PRIME COLOUR would be permitted to race again. PRINCESS DANI was found to have a laceration to the front of the near hind fetlock. Veterinary examinations of MAGIC MORNING (NZ) and SETO FAIRY did not detect any abnormalities.

RULIQUE commenced to over race near the 800 metres and near the 600 metres lost ground when it was awkwardly placed on the heels of LACRISTI. M.A.Cahill (RULIQUE) stated his mount over raced in the early stages, hung in passing the 600 metres and did not respond when placed under pressure after straightening. A veterinary examination of MUSICAL BEAT did not detect any abnormality. EXRAY returned with a laceration to the near hind.

Veterinary examinations of ZUM, MAJORETTE and RED ROBERT found RED ROBERT fit to start and ZUM and MAJORETTE unfit to take their place in the field. ZUM and MAJORETTE were withdrawn by stewards at 4.58pm who ordered all monies invested on ZUM and MAJORETTE be refunded and all successful wagers placed prior to 4.58pm be paid less deductions of 31 cents win, 21 cents place and 55 cents quinella on the face value of the ticket. Trainers Mr. M. Petrovic and Mr. J. Morrisey were advised warnings would be placed on the barrier manners of ZUM and MAJORETTE. CEDE NIGHT and GREY DAN were slow to begin. When questioned regarding the pace set in the early stages of the event S. Pawsey (APPERTAIN), stated he was under specific instructions to lead and after being slightly slow to begin he rode his mount hard to endeavor to take up a leading position but he was unable to cross CALHOUN, which was racing to his inside. Trainer Mr. J Morrisey confirmed the instruction given but felt they may have been overdone to a certain extent as he was surprised to see APPERTAIN ridden out with the whip in the early stages. The explanations were noted.
