RACE 1: TWO-YEAR-OLD OPEN HANDICAP            1000M

When AMISERE was unable to be loaded it was withdrawn by Stewards at 12.44 p.m. Stewards subsequently ordered that all moneys invested on that horse be refunded and that all successful wagers placed prior to 12.44 p.m. be paid less deductions of 37¢ win, 31¢ place and 65¢ quinella on the face value of the ticket. Trainer Mr V. Miller was advised that AMISERE must barrier trial to the Stewards satisfaction before it would be permitted to race again. Approaching the 800 metres CANNYKIA was checked after it ran up onto the heels of COMMANDS NOTHING. A post-race veterinary examination of FOR THE WAY, which tailed off, found that horse to be mildly shin sore in the near foreleg. Trainer Mr N. Layt advised Stewards that it was now his intention to send FOR THE WAY for a spell.

RACE 2: YASS MAIDEN PLATE             1000M

Following the running of this event the track was upgraded to dead. SHORTAN SHARP and AMBER LIQUID were slow to begin. Shortly after straightening MARFORTUNE was disappointed for a run between LOCHTAINE and NAQIYAH, which was weakening. Approaching the 200 metres SHREWD LAD was steadied and shifted out to improve when disappointed for a run to the inside of MARFORTUNE. When questioned on the performance of NAQIYAH, rider C. Reith stated that the filly had trialled and worked well prior to today’s event and, after beginning well, it travelled well in an advantageous position until straightening. He added that, when placed under pressure after straightening, NAQIYAH failed to respond and lost ground noticeably from the 300 metres. A veterinary examination of NAQIYAH found that horse to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G. Rogerson will be questioned regarding NAQIYAH’S condition in the days subsequent to the event.

RACE 3: YASS MAIDEN PLATE            1600M

DAMAH GEM was slow to begin. When questioned on the disappointing performance of EZE LA BELLE rider J. Whitney stated that his mount raced in a slightly more forward position as opposed to its previous start due to an inside barrier draw and it travelled well until approaching the 600 metres where it commenced to give ground. He further stated that it was his opinion the mare may not have been totally comfortable on today’s rain-affected going. A veterinary examination of EZE LA BELLE did not detect any abnormalities.

RACE 5: CLASS FIVE HANDICAP             1000M

ZUM and WATCH THE TIME were slow to begin. Approaching the 800 metres GENERATOR struck the rail and became unbalanced when momentarily crowded to the inside of APPERTAIN. When questioned on the performance of SERKELT rider W. Pearson stated that he had been instructed to lead and after being slightly slow to begin he rode forward to clear runners to his inside and was able to find the rail approaching the 800 metres. He stated that he was mindful of the fact that the horse was up in weight and had had to be ridden hard early, so after obtaining the lead he endeavoured to steady the pace to attempt to give SERKELT a rest in the middle stages. He added that, when pressured after the 300 metres, his mount found little and made a respiratory noise after the 100 metres and he noticed the gelding had its tongue over the bit when pulling up. A post-race veterinary examination of SERKELT found that horse to have bled for the first time and as such it now suffers the embargoes of AR53A.

Approaching the 900 metres COARSE COTTON struck the running rail and shifted out and as a result was awkwardly placed close to the heels of DANCARAMA. For a short distance after the 600 metres PRINCE PAREE was held up and unable to improve close to the heels of OUR GIRL JO, which was weakening. A veterinary examination of BREAKAWAY found that horse to have a poor post-race recovery.

RACE 7: YASS CUP HANDICAP            1400M

Approaching the 100 metres GREIGACIOUS was steadied away from the heels of MAGIC PUZZLE, which shifted in abruptly. When questioned App. R. Bensley stated that he had been instructed to lead if possible on AMALFI’S REVENGE due to the horse being drawn wide on the track and also to take off from the 600 metres in an attempt to steal a break on the rest of the field. He added that he was unable to obtain the lead as THE HORSE JACK improved to his inside and this resulted in his mount refusing to settle and weakening noticeably over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary examination of AMALFI’S REVENGE found that horse to have an elevated heart rate. When questioned on the improved performance of BANDARES trainer Ms T. Schmetzer stated that an increase in distance and a rain-affected track had been the key factors that led to today’s performance. She indicated that the stable had not supported BANDARES today.

GRANDMARTIN and GREY DAN were held up from the 400 metres until approaching the 200 metres. When questioned rider C. Reith could offer no tangible explanation for the poor the performance of AL HASIM and stated that his mount travelled well until pressured near the 300 metres, from which point it commenced to give ground. A veterinary examination of AL HASIM did not detect any abnormalities.
