CAZA LADRON shifted out abruptly on jumping resulting in STANDABOVE being severely checked (3L).  EGYPTIAN ODYSSEY was slow to begin (3L) and hung out severely in the early and middle stages.  Trainer Mr G. Vella was advised that EGYPTIAN ODYSSEY would be required to trial to the stewards satisfaction in an official barrier trial prior to racing again.  RUMBULLION raced very wide throughout.  Near the 400 metres ARMAGOODLOOKA was steadied away from the heels of LADY BRIONY which was laying in.  App. B. Poile was found guilty of a charge of careless riding (AR 137(a)) in that near the 200 metres he permitted MI PIACHI to shift in when insufficiently clear of LA VENTANA resulting in that filly being severely checked.  App. Poile's permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence after the Sapphire Coast meeting on Sunday 1 February 2004 and to expire on Friday 13 February 2004 on which day he may ride.  A post race veterinary examination of  RUBITBABE, which hung in over the concluding stages revealed no apparent abnormalities.

RACE 6: OPEN HANDICAP 1000M

When questioned App. T. Clark (LOCK THE KEY) explained he was instructed to obtain cover from his outside gate if his mount was unable to go forward early, and after travelling 50 metres he elected to steady the gelding to obtain a position nearer the rail when it became apparent that he would not have the necessary speed to clear runners to his inside.  He further explained that in going back to obtain cover he was obliged to race further back than intended however when clear in the straight LOCK THE KEY went to the line strongly under its big weight.  Trainer Mr G. Colvin confirmed the instructions given, adding that with the amount of speed drawn inside LOCK THE KEY he was satisfied with Apprentice Clark's decision not to persevere for the lead in the early stages.  These explanations were accepted.  Near the 200 metres GWEN'S STAR was inconvenienced when CHOSEN VALOUR shifted out under pressure.
