Vinnie Roe, last year's Irish and French St Leger winner, scored his first success over twelve furlongs in the Listed Ballyroan Stakes at Leopardstown.

A top-class stayer, Vinnie Roe was running for the first time since finishing second in the Ascot Gold Cup in June and he will be now stepped back up in class and in trip.

Trainer Dermot Weld who listened to the race on the phone from Chicago, has always held the son of Definite Article in the highest regard and Vinnie Roe now heads for the Irish St Leger at the Curragh and then to Australia for the Melbourne Cup, a race Weld famously won with Vintage Crop.

Vinnie Roe is quoted by the NSW TAB at A$13 for the Melbourne Cup, on the second row of betting along with Universal Prince and behind Magical Miss on A$11.
