RACE ONE: MAIDEN PLATE 1400 METRES.
LAMARLIE shifted out shortly after the start and hampered THE BOOK BINDER. RINGER’S PRIDE over raced in the early and middle stages and near the 900m was checked away from the heels of MAYBE KATE. App B Hull (MAYBE KATE) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding (AR 137 (a)) in that near the 900m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of THE BOOK BINDER which was crowded onto MODENA MODENA which was checked. B Hull’s permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 24 August, 2002 and to expire on Saturday 31 August, 2002 on which day he may ride. From the 600m to the 350m SOUTHER CHARM was held up and unable to improve when awkwardly placed between THE BOOK BINDER and TRUE GYPSY. A post race veterinary examination of MAYBE KATE revealed the horse was displaying signs of respiratory distress.

RACE TWO: CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1300 METRES.
BIG SQUATTER over raced in the early and middle stages and near the 900m was steadied away from the heels of EXPLODING BULL. Near the 900m COSMIC JESS was steadied when crowded by SLEW O’NUGGETS (K Watling) which shifted in. K Watling was severely reprimanded. When questioned G Ryan (COSMIC JESS) explained that after striking interference near the 900m his mount raced further back than intended. He added that he commenced to place his mount under some pressure near the 600m and under full pressure near the 350m. He added that he was obliged to steady away from the heels of SLEW O’ NUGGETS which shifted out near the 200m. He added that after this COSMIC JESS ran on only fairly. G Ryan was advised that in the opinion of the stewards he should have made a greater effort to place his mount under more pressure at the 600m in order to be closer to the leaders at the 350m. He was further advised that he would be expected to ride in mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query. A post race veterinary examination of COSMIC JESS did not reveal any obvious abnormality.

RACE THREE: MAIDEN PLATE 1000 METRES.
STRADIVARI, HIGH SWELLS and RAFFLE’S DREAM all raced greenly in the early and middle stages. Near the 200m RAFFLE’S DREAM was held up for a short distance. Near the 200m MICHELLANTE was steadied away from the heels of HELENA’S BAB which was taken in by PAZANNE which shifted in whilst racing greenly. Near the 200m HIGH SWELLS was eased away from the heels of HOT WHISPER.
1st) CAPTAIN TOBY 2nd) BOLD IDEAS 3rd) BILLY GUN 4th) MICHELLANTE
RACE FOUR: CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1600 METRES.
ROQUET MAN stood flatfooted as the gates opened losing ground. BIG HENRY over raced in the early stages. BIG HENRY hung in when under pressure in the straight.

RACE FIVE: CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1000 METRES.
RUTLAND DRUM began awkwardly and then was very slowly into stride. Trainer Mr M Almond was advised that a warning would be placed on RUTLAND DRUM. An inquiry into App C Wearne’s riding of SHORTY’S DUCK was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
