Race 4. CLASS 4 PLATE, 1600 METRES:

Near the 400 metres SOUTHGATE was steadied when disappointed for a run between DUKE OF ALBA and KING CUTLER…… Stewards considered an objection lodged by App G SCIMONE the rider of OUR BALI HI, placed third, against BREAKAWAY (App D LANGRIDGE) being declared the winner alleging interference over the final 100 metres. It was established that inside the final 25 metres of the race, BREAKAWAY shifted in and bumped OUR BALI HI resulting in that gelding becoming unbalanced. In considering the objection, in particular the momentum of both horses prior to contact being made and the proximity of the point of interference to the winning post, stewards were of the view that had the interference not occurred BREAKAWAY would still have finished ahead of OUR BALI HI and the objection was dismissed. App D LANGRIDGE subsequently pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding (AR137(a)) in that he did permit BREAKAWAY to shift in after the 100 metres when insufficiently clear of SOUTHGATE which was checked and also OUR BALI HI which became unbalanced. App LANGRIDGE'S permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence after the Canberra meeting on Friday 13th September, 2002 and to expire on Sunday 22nd September on which day he may ride.

He added that when put under pressure in the straight NOT FUSSY initially did not respond to his urging's and raced greenly however when balanced over the concluding stages the mare went to the line strongly. These explanations were accepted…. Near the 100 metres FUJI KID was crowded between NOT FUSSY and STARWAY TO HEAVEN both of which shifted ground.

BE GOOD TO MUM was slowly away and hung out in the middle stages….
