RACE 1: MAIDEN PLATE 1600M

COYOTE MOOSE was slow to begin. SNOW RUN overraced in the early and middle stages. Near the 450 metres PORTEOS was steadied away from the heels of MADAM ARCHWAY, which shifted in when disappointed for a run to the inside of CANSPRINT. When questioned on the performance of RAW ENERGY, rider J. Nisbet stated that he was instructed to settle the gelding off pace, if at all possible. He added that, after finding cover in the early stages of the event, he elected to allow RAW ENERGY to stride forward when runners to his inside appealed for more room. This resulted in RAW ENERGY racing wide thereafter and disappointing in his opinion. A veterinary examination of RAW ENERGY found the gelding to have bled and Trainer Mr M. Miladinovic was advised of the provisions of AR53A. A veterinary examination of DOMICK PRINCE found that gelding to be badly dehydrated and to have a laceration to the off-hind fetlock.

Near the 300 metres AIN’T SEEN NOTHIN’ was held up behind JOACHIM and to the inside of WIMMERA WIZARD. WIMMERA WIZARD was inclined to lay in under pressure after straightening and therefore proved difficult to ride out. Rider J. Scorse was reprimanded regarding the use of his whip in the barrier stalls prior to the running of this race.

RACE 4: CLASS ONE HANDICAP 1200M

N. Souquet replaced B. Johnson (ill) as the rider of RADIANT IMAGE. Johnson was advised that a medical clearance must be provided before he would be permitted to ride again. KINTOREE blundered after the start and was crowded between COMPLETELY STAKAS and SUPERSUE. MISTRAL laid in noticeably throughout. Approaching the 800 metres, KINTOREE, whilst awkwardly placed to the heels of TITLED, shifted out resulting in ALWYN STREET and RUSSIAN MELODY being carried wider on the track. When questioned on the performance of MISTRAL rider M. A. Cahill stated that his mount hung in badly after the start, causing him to be concerned for the riders racing to his inside. He added that, after passing the 800 metres, his mount appeared to race more genuinely but, when placed under pressure after straightening, his mount hung in severely, resulting in him being unable to fully test MISTRAL over the final 300 metres. Trainer Mr S. Hill was advised that MISTRAL must trial to the Stewards’ satisfaction before it would be permitted to race again. A veterinary examination of MISTRAL did not detect any abnormalities. A veterinary examination of COMPLETELY STAKAS found that horse to be mildly distressed and to have a small laceration to its nearside cheek.

DANCING DIAMOND, DAMAH LADY, CITY GAMBLER and BLUEY’S BULLET were slow to begin. Approaching the 800 metres SHORE I WILL, whilst overracing, shifted out away from the heels of FRONTIER and hampered BOOM MOON. BENMANANG and PRINCE PAREE, which were following, were severely hampered and carried wider on the track at approximately 700 metres. After the 700 metres BLUEY’S BULLET (P. Rowe) fell and was later euthanased after fracturing its offside shoulder. P. Rowe was treated by ambulance staff on course and transported to hospital for medical treatment. An inquiry into the reason BLUEY’S BULLET fell was adjourned to a date to be fixed. BABOUCHKE, which was following BLUEY’S BULLET, was severely inconvenienced in consequence. When questioned on the performance of DANCING DIAMOND Apprentice C. Karakatsanis stated he was instructed to race in a handy position but was unable to do so when his mount was slow to begin. He added that, as a result of drawing an inside barrier, he attempted to improve along the rails where possible and shifted wide on straightening to obtain clear running where his mount found the line well. Stewards noted Karakatsanis’ explanations.

RACE 7: CLASS TWO HANDICAP 1400M

A. Bloomfield replaced P. Rowe (indisposed) as the rider of TWINKLE BY. As the off-hind plate of INTECASH was unable to be refitted behind the barriers, permission was granted for that horse to race bare behind. PAPA’S PIONEER, SKIMMING and WAGGAWINA were slow into stride. Near the 500 metres MIGHTY SUAVE was steadied when crowded to the inside of TRIBUTARY (App. C. Karakatsanis) which shifted in when not quite clear. Karakatsanis was reprimanded and advised to exercise far more care. When questioned on the performance of WAGGAWINA Rider J. Nisbet stated that he was issued with specific instructions to settle back in the field and attempt to obtain cover. Trainer Mr M. McRae confirmed the instructions given, but expressed some disappointment with how far back in the field WAGGAWINA settled. Stewards noted all explanations but advised Mr McRae that he must be more specific with his instructions in future and any variations to tactics must be notified to the Stewards prior to the event. Trainer Mr R. De Smet was fined the sum of $100 under AR117 for removing INTECASH from the course before the prescribed time. As INTECASH was unable to be examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon, Mr De Smet was advised that a veterinary clearance must be provided before INTECASH would be permitted to race again.
