Trainer Fined for Positive Swab

NSW TRB Stewards yesterday opened an inquiry into the Analysts finding of 16 beta hydroxy stanozolol in the urine sample taken from Sir Redford following its win in Race 5 (Blacktown Workers Club Handicap) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 29 June 2002.

Evidence yesterday was taken from trainer and managing part-owner Mr Mack Griffith. Dr C. Suann, NSW TRB Senior Official Veterinarian, and Mr A. Stenhouse, Official Analyst, ARFL, assisted the inquiry.

Mr Griffith tendered evidence of stanozolol having been administered to Sir Redford by his veterinarian on the day following its 2nd placing at Warwick Farm on 2 June, 2002, with a view to Sir Redford being prepared for the Grafton carnival.

Mr Griffith later changed plans and started Sir Redford 26 days after the administration of stanozolol, which was two days inside the withholding period recommended by his veterinarian.

Mr Griffith pleaded guilty to a charge under AR175(h)(ii) of having caused to be administered to the racehorse Sir Redford a prohibited substance, namely, stanozolol, a metabolite of which was detected in the sample taken from that horse following its win.

Mr Griffith was fined $6,000.

In assessing penalty the Stewards took into account that this was the first offence in Mr Griffiths 16-year training career.

Acting under the powers of AR177 Sir Redford was disqualified from its 1st placing and the Stewards amended the placings for the Blacktown Workers Club Handicap to read as follows:

1st Oh She Said, 2nd Pointy Stick, 3rd Noble Sultan, 4th Redfern Lady, 5th Kid Millions.
