RACE 1 – Newcastle Melanoma Unit Maiden Plate (Div 1) 1200m

Apprentice D Pitomac (Cotton Queen) was unable to claim his full allowance and was fined $100 under LR70. Danabay, which was slow to begin, overraced in the early stages. Passing the 200m Koko Magic (M Manktelow) shifted out and made contact with City Babe and as a result City Babe became badly unbalanced. M Manktelow was advised to exercise care. Trainer D P Smith will be interviewed in relation to the declaration of a rider for Brattori.

RACE 2 – Hunter Melanoma Foundation Maiden Plate (Div 2) 1200m

Enjoy It shifted out on jumping and made heavy contact with Humidity resulting in that horse knuckling over. A post race veterinary examination of Dakette, which tailed the field, revealed the filly to be lame in the off hind leg. D Baker, representing trainer K Delforce, advised that Dakette will now be sent for a spell.

RACE 3 – Radford Shopfitters Class 1 Handicap 900m

Miss Attitude, which fail to jump when the gates were released, took no part in the race. After interviewing its rider M Manktelow and trainer Mrs D Lumsden, stewards ordered that Miss Attitude must trial to the satisfaction of the stewards prior to being permitted to start in a race again. Signage jumped away awkwardly. Brother Of Danny was inclined to lay in when placed under pressure in the straight.

RACE 4 – Skin Cancer Clinic Newcastle Maiden Plate 1400m

On return to scale T Muto, the rider of third placed Poetic Nijinsky, lodged an objection against Lead Us Not (T Jones) being declared the winner for alleged interference over the final 100 metres. On the evidence it was established that after the 200m Lead Us Not was inclined to shift in under pressure and made contact on two occasions with Poetic Nijinsky which was crowded for room. The stewards were of the opinion however that bearing in mind the margin of a length that had the interference not occurred Poetic Nijinsky would not have finished ahead of Lead Us Not and the objection was dismissed. At a subsequent inquiry jockey T Jones was severely reprimanded for riding his mount along while shifting ground. Addendum and Banrock were slow to begin. Making the first turn Gold Rimu overraced. Order Arms overraced in the middle stages and near the 600m was steadied off the heels of Nassidorf. Shortly after straightening Nassidorf (P Losh) shifted in when not clear of Order Arms resulting in that horse having to steady from the heels of Nassidorf and in doing so shifted out. As a consequence Addendum, which was following, clipped the heels of Order Arms and blundered. P Losh was reprimanded for allowing his mount to shift in when not quite clear.

RACE 5 – McKanna Fabrications Class 2 Handicap (Div 1) 1200m

Gold Banker was slow to begin. For some distance passing the 200m Gold Banker raced in restricted room between Crazy Choice and Miss Hillary. Ballykiss had difficulty obtaining clear running in the straight.

RACE 6 – Wadco Lighting Class 2 Handicap (Div 2) 1200m

Clear Strategy shifted in at the start and hampered Buster Sly. Passing the 100m Sunset Gift shifted out under pressure resulting in Cooder being inconvenienced. Flying Spear hung out badly from the 600m until entering the straight and as a result Powder Finger was inconvenienced for some distance and taken wider rounding the home turn. Trainer G Walter will be advised that a warning would be placed on the racing manners of Flying Spear. N Seymour (Sunset Gift) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137(a) in that passing the 1100m he permitted his mount to shift in when insufficiently clear of Flying Spear resulting in that horse being taken in across the running of Chianina which was checked. N Seymour’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Saturday 17 August 2002 and to expire on Monday, 26 August 2002, on which day he may ride.

RACE 7 – Moylan’s – Business Solutions Pty Ltd Provincial Class 4 Plate 1400m

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of Diamond Rhythm, A W Robinson stated that his mount travelled well until the 600m at which point he commenced to work into race and in his opinion in the straight Diamond Rhythm was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off as expected. A post race veterinary examination of Diamond Rhythm did not reveal any obvious abnormalities. Mr K Lees, representing trainer M Lees, could not offer any tangible explanation for the disappointing performance as the horse had worked well leading into today race. He said it is the intention to step the gelding up in distance now and undertook to report if there is anything amiss with Diamond Rhythm in the days subsequent.

RACE 8 –Varley Transitional Handicap 1200m

Intrepid Boy, which was slow to begin, overraced in the early stages. Over the concluding stages Block raced tight between Intrepid Boy and Glen Idol (B Herd) which shifted out. B Herd was advised to exercise more care.
