SUPPLEMENTARY: WYONG, 25 JUNE 2002 – Race 6: Media Cup Class 1 Handicap 1100m

An inquiry into apprentice M Cant being dislodged from Kapitza after the winning post was concluded today. Shortly after the winning post Gigabyte Maiz shifted out away from Life’s Fortune, which rolled out slightly at the same time as Power Play, which was racing greenly, shifted in abruptly. Kapitza, which was racing between these two runners, was tightened for room, clipped the heels of Gigabyte Maiz and blundered dislodging apprentice M Cant. As the stewards were not satisfied that any one rider was responsible for the incident, no action was taken other than to remind all riders to ensure they leave sufficient room at all times.

RACE 2 – Challenger Life Maiden Handicap 1350m

Passing the 100m Star Sorcerer had to be checked off the heels of the tiring Silent Encounter.

When questioned regarding Silent Encounter leading today, R M Quinn stated that he was instructed to go forward as the horse was stepping up in distance and with the addition of blinkers it was felt Silent Encounter would be better suited racing in a forward position. He said the horse travelled well after not having to work too hard to lead but with the blinkers was inclined to race keenly in the middle stages and after straightening failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing in the run home. Mr P Dowsey, representing trainer J Hawkes, confirmed the instructions and was advised that in future he must inform the stewards of any proposed change in riding tactics.

A post race veterinary examination of Silent Encounter did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.

When questioned R Thompson (Cuvanna) explained that approaching the 500m he was of the opinion that Majestic Design would take him into the race and therefore approaching the 450m he was reluctant to shift to the outside of that horse and cover extra ground. He said shortly thereafter Magilas improved quickly to his outside and he was unable then to shift to the outside of Majestic Design despite his efforts and as a result was obliged to check off that horse’s heels and from that point to the 100m he had difficult obtaining clear running. R Thompson agreed he had erred in not shifting to a position to the outside of Majestic Design when the opportunity became available. R Thompson was reprimanded and told that his ride at that particular point lacked initiative and in future similar rides may not be condone. Trainer C Conners stated that in his opinion R Thompson had erred in not coming to the outside of Majestic Design and that there had been moderate support by the stable.

Stewards considered an objection lodged by stipendiary steward Mr C J George on behalf of the connections of the second placegetter Kid Millions against Raid And Rule being declared the winner on grounds of alleged interference near the 100m. on the evidence it was established that approaching that point Raid And Rule shifted out and brushed Kid Millions which became unbalanced. The stewards were of the opinion however that had that interference not occurred that Kid Millions would not have finished ahead of Raid And Rule and in those circumstances the objection was dismissed.

A post race veterinary examination of Lucifer’s Double which, after leading, compounded in the straight, revealed the gelding to have minor lacerations to the near hind fetlock.

Passing the 1000m Life’s Fortune had to be steadied off the heels of Mr Frown, when Life’s Fortune was inclined to shift out away from Dance The Breeze after being bumped by that horse.

Rounding the home turn Mr Frown was inclined to lay in resulting in its rider having to stop riding and straighten on a number of occasions.

Over the final 100 metres Claytons experienced difficult in obtaining clear running.

C Brown (Ode To Thee) was reprimanded for permitting his mount to shift out when not quite clear of Bounty Niaga passing the 300m resulting in that gelding being steadied.

B Pengelly (Bounty Niaga) stated that at the gelding’s last start at Gosford on 2 August 2002 it led easily, however today showed no early gate speed and got further back than he had anticipated.  A post race veterinary examination of Bounty Niaga did not reveal any obvious abnormalities.
