Cambridge jumps rider Richard Eynon scored the first win of his brief career when he rode outsider Phantom Jay to victory in the La-Z-Boy Chair Hurdles at Avondale today.

Eynon was having just his second race ride and punched the 40-to-one shot home to beat another outsider in Fearless Arrival.

This set up a $34,000 trifecta dividend, with third place going to the more favoured Mastercard.

Runner-up Fearless Arrival was ridden by Matamata apprentice Angela Magee, having just her third raceday ride.

Both Eynon and Magee are graduates of the jumps riders' clinic staged at the Ann and Ken Browne property at the beginning of the winter.

Matamata jockey Opie Bosson is the new stable rider for Te Akau Racing Stables.

The former crack apprentice will ride extensively for the Matamata-based stable of Mark Walker - the number one trainer for Te Akau Racing Stables.

Bosson recently returned to action after a lengthy break through injury and increased weight.

Bosson, recognised as one of New Zealand's most talented riders, has wasted no time in getting himself re-established.

Part of Bosson's contract with Te Akau Racing Stables is that he will ride trackwork five days a week for the stable.

r4bluestar.jpg (14315 bytes)Preparations for the National Jumps Day at Paeroa on September 8 continue, with the latest news from across the Tasman being that Tommy Hazlett is returning to New Zealand to live.

Hazlett will be breaking in and pre-training from a base in Dunedin, and he will ride at Oamaru before joining other southern jockeys Debbie Henderson, Barry Pelling and Corey Argue at Paeroa.

Also coming from Australia are Brett Scott, who already has a full book of rides apart from the open steeplechase, and Nathan Hanley.

To accommodate the expected high number of maiden jumpers, the maiden hurdle and steeplechase will be split if there are sufficient entries.

The second race will be run as a consolation-type event, similar to the Bayer Classic, with a stake of $6,000. In addition to trophies for winning owners, there will be points prizes for jockeys and trainers on the day, as well as trophies for the trainers of the winners of the open races and a strapper's prize for the best presented horse in each race.

Bring on Cent Home's Next Run: Wallace

r4centhome3.jpg (19688 bytes)Wairarapa trainer Jim Wallace can hardly wait for September 14 and the $120,000 Glenmorgan Hawke’s Bay Challenge Stakes at Hastings - whether or not Sunline returns for the same race.

Wallace’s classy gelding Cent Home (NZ) (Lord Ballina) showed he was as good as ever at seven years old when he powered home for third to Sunline (NZ) and Tit For Taat(NZ) in Saturday’s Mudgway Partsworld Stakes.

At the line the official margins of three-quarters of a length and a length were diminishing rapidly as Cent Home recovered from a chequered passage in the straight.

Unsoundness has plagued Cent Home’s career but Wallace touched wood this morning as he said that his charge had come through his season pipe-opener in good shape.

r4centhome2.jpg (13569 bytes)"At this stage you can expect to see us there on the 14th and again for the Kelt (September 28)."

Plans for Tit For Tat, who threatened to spoil the Hastings party on Saturday afternoon when he threw down the challenge to Sunline, are uncertain.

Trainer Wayne Herbert remains unconvinced that the chestnut is at his best beyond a sprint distance, but that may not be sufficient to keep him away from the 1600 metre Glenmorgan, due in part to a lack of alternative opportunities.

Other runners from last Saturday who are expected to back up are Conquistar (NZ) (Danasinga) and Pure Theatre (NZ) (Nureyev), close up fourth and fifth behind Sunline, as well as the next two home, Hello Dolly (NZ) (Mi Preferido) and Hail (NZ) (Star South), and Saint Cecile (NZ) (Pompeii Court) and Leica Guv (NZ) (Deputy Governor), whose chances were settled with slow beginnings.

Cambridge colt Danroad threw down the gauntlet to his fellow three-year-olds with a brilliant first-up win at Hastings today.

Punters who installed the Danehill colt a hot favourite in the Curraghmore Stud Premier had an early scare when he jumped sideways at the start. But he was quickly into stride and led after 200 metres.

"He was doing handstands with 500 metres to run," said successful jockey Andrew Calder, "and it was easy after that."

Danroad strode to the finish a length-and-a-half clear of Jack the Stripper, with further gaps to Crown Control and Jahan.

The 1200 metres on a track officially described as easy was run in a respectable 1:11.85. Danroad, whose two-year-old season was curtailed by wet tracks, appeared comfortable in his action, with the proviso that he was never off the bit.

Provided the ground is reasonable, the leggy colt will race next in the Hawke's Bay Guineas on September 14 on his way to his major early season mission, the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas.

Unbeaten O'Sullivan Galloper Prepares for Return

Zafar, the winner of his only start in the autumn, is beginning to quicken up in his work for trainer Paul O'Sullivan.

The slow maturing Zabeel gelding lived right up to his reputation when he won his home-track debut in May. An early winter spell followed and after a stone-bruise hindered his progress recently, he has now begun to speed up in training.

"We're in no hurry with him," said Paul O'Sullivan this morning as the big gelding was put through a quiet gallop by his brother Lance. "He'll be ready to trial or race later on next month and his first target of any sort will be the Dunstan Stayers' Series."

O'Sullivan will line up a large team of horses at Thursday's Taupo trials. Proven stable members Bahira, Lutaana, The Player and newcomer Mojo will step out along with several untried youngsters.

Flying Class, one of last season's leading juveniles, heads the Taupo team from the Moroney-Scott stable

Port Adelaide Guineas winner Kazz is back in work with Frank and Craig Ritchie at Takanini.

"He returned to work this week after a good spell," said Frank Ritchie.

Kazz won the Port Adelaide Guineas in Adelaide last autumn and finished sixth in the South Australian Derby after playing up at the barrier.

Ritchie said Kazz will remain in New Zealand to race over the summer months and will be set for an Australian campaign next autumn.

"He could even go for something like the Dunstan Stayers Championship at home," Ritchie said.

Unfortunately the Ritchies have had to rule out another promising stable star, Phenomenal View, for the summer after he injured himself in a paddock accident.

"He won't be back in action until next autumn at the earliest," said Ritchie.

r7labelladama.jpg (17135 bytes)Top racemare La Bella Dama is heading back across the Tasman after her failure in Saturday's Mudgway Partsworld Stakes at Hastings.

Co-trainer Graeme Rogerson said the performance showed that La Bella Dama was not happy racing on the Hastings track.

"She can come over to Melbourne to race now," Rogerson said.

"Her next start will be in either the Memsie Stakes or Craiglee Stakes," Rogerson said.

Sunline's Back - But Only Just!

r6sunline2.jpg (11799 bytes)Sunline lived up to her champion billing by winning the Mudgway Partsworld Stakes today, but it wasn't the easy victory expected by the thousands who flocked to Hastings racecourse to see the great mare.

In a planned move, Tit For Taat and apprentice jockey Michael Walker took the race to Sunline and Greg Childs, crossing to lead and fighting all the way to the finish.

When Childs asked Sunline for an effort 250 metres out, the expected burst of acceleration failed to eventuate. Childs was forced to pull the whip and drove his mount all the way to the finish for a three-quarter length win.

There was another length to fast finishing Cent Home, narrowly shading Conquistar.

"Run the race at equal weights and we beat her," declared Michael Walker on unsaddling after the weight-for-age race.

r6sunline3.jpg (8560 bytes)Childs was not prepared to concede so readily. "I always thought we would get past the other horse," he said, "but I have to admit I was worried that something else might get over the top of us."

The 1400 metres was run on an easy track in a very good 1:22.98. Co-trainer Stephen McKee said afterwards that there was only a slim chance that Sunline would be back at Hastings for the Glenmorgan Hawke's Bay Challenge Stakes on September 14.

"Sydney in two weeks' time or Melbourne a week later are more likely," he said. "We'll just see how she pulls up."

Wayne Herbert and Jim Wallace were thrilled with the respective efforts of Tit For Taat and Cent Home.

The latter will attempt to add the Glenmorgan to his list of achievements and then try for a second Kelt Capital Stakes on September 28.

Star Kiwi Juvenile Lady Dehere Back on Track

One of last season's leading New Zealand two-year-olds, Lady Dehere (Dehere-Express A Smile), will return to the racing scene at Wanganui on Saturday.

Co-trainer Graeme Sanders said Lady Dehere will begin her new campaign in the $25,000 Waikato Stud Stakes (1200m), a Listed race for three-year-old fillies at the Wanganui meeting.

"She is quite forward and I expect her to give a good account of herself on Saturday," Sanders said.

"She hasn't grown at all since her two-year-old campaign but she is a lot stronger," he said.

Lady Dehere's major win as a two-year-old came in the rich Mercedes Super Bonus Classique (1200m) at Te Rapa in February. She also triumphed in the Group Two BNZ Matamata Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Matamata last season.

Those performances earned Lady Dehere a Free Handicap rating of 56.5kg - the second highest rating for a two-year-old filly behind her stablemate Danceinthesun who was rated at 57kg.

Danceinthesun is on track to make her three-year-old debut at Ellerslie on Saturday week in a progressive 1200m event.

The Sanders' stable will have its traditional attack on the opening two-year-old race at Wanganui with last weeke's Cambridge trials winner Romadile (by Armidale) lining up along with an Anziyan colt who finished second at the Cambridge trials.

Matamata lightweight jockey David Johnson suffered a suspected broken leg when a young horse he was riding dropped dead during trackwork this morning.

The accident happened when Johnson's mount was working towards the end of an organised jumpout on the Matamata course proper. The horse is believed to have suffered a heart attack.
