Local hoop Paul Denton upstaged a talented group of visiting South Australian jockeys when he won today's Qantas Invitation Class 4 Handicap (1400m) at Alice Springs.

Denton gave his mount Swepscay a perfect ride and in the run to the line the four-year-old gelded son of End Sweep cruised home to win by three and a quarter lengths.

The minor placings in the invitation jockeys race were filled by two Adelaide based riders - Paul Gatt (Super Slider) and Simon Price (Howdy Ken).

Unplaced riders included other Adelaide based riders Dwayne Dunn, Joe Bowditch and Scott Leckey.

Swepscay, the winner of the invitation race, is part owned and trained by Warren based horseman Merv Rumble. He's enjoyed a great deal of success since basing a team at Alice Springs for the red centre carnival.

Rumble is set to head north to participate in the lucrative Darwin Cup carnival in the top end after he gives the team a three week break following their Alice adventure.

Today's winner Swepscay made up for an unlucky second when he raced at Pioneer Park on Saturday. He struck some interference near the turn and was unable to catch the winner over the concluding stages.

The feature race, the XXXX Gold Alice Springs Cup is the last race on today's card.
