OAKLEIGH BOY (B Cornell) proved difficult to load and was fractious in the starting gates. At the 600 metre mark OAKLEIGH BOY shifted outwards forcing OLLETTIE (B Dunn (A)) to race wide from that point. Subsequent to the race Stewards questioned the rider of OAKLEIGH BOY and the trainer of the gelding, Mr R MERRALL about the disappointing performance. Jockey B CORNELL stated that OAKLEIGH BOY had raced ungenerously throughout the race and had attempted to hang out and would not respond to his riding. Trainer Mr MERRALL stated that prior to the race he believed that OAKLEIGH BOY would be competitive and that he had given the gelding a chance of winning the race and was most disappointed with the run. Explanations were noted by Stewards. Stewards ordered a veterinary examination which revealed no abnormalities. A swab was also obtained from the gelding.
