Stewards questioned Mr L Houldsworth, trainer of CATHALOOK, which was nominated for this event. It was established that CATHALOOK had been taken to the paddock on Friday 28th March, however Mr Houldsworth had every intention of bringing CATHALOOK back in to run in this race if it was required to make up the field of 5. However on Monday 31 March he had discussions with another trainer who stated that they intended to nominate in the race which meant that he did not need to bring CATHALOOK back in from the paddock. Mr Houldsworth subsequently scratched CATHALOOK from this event. Mr Houldsworth was reminded of his responsibilities under AR56A(b) and notified that in future he must adhere to this rule. RACE EIGHT CLASS 2 HCP - 12OO M

Stewards questioned P Denton, rider of GREAT EAGLE, which compounded quickly. P Denton stated that the gelding was a little underdone and he thought it would need the run today. That aside, when the gelding began to weaken from the 600 metres it stopped far quicker than he expected. Ms A White, trainer of GREAT EAGLE stated that she expected the gelding to need the run today, however she believed that the horse gives up quickly when it is headed by other runners. Stewards reminded Ms White of her responsibilities under AR140(a) to present her runners properly fit and conditioned to race. Ms White stated that it was her professional opinion that this horse was properly fit and conditioned for it’s first up run and that rather than it’s condition not being sufficient it was more the way the gelding fails to be competitive when headed by other runners. Taking all matters into account, stewards issued a warning against GREAT EAGLE that if it was to perform in a similar manner in future it may be required to trial satisfactorily in an organised trial prior to racing.
