GETTING LUCKY (T Norton) went down in the starting stalls prior to the race start. Vet reported that GETTING LUCKY had been kicked by another runner but after an inspection had been passed fit to take its place in the race. Approaching the 600 metre mark BLEV (M Cullen) had to be eased when ARCHIE BABY (G Lefoe) who was inclined to race greenly shifted inwards.

SARASON'S GIRL (M Cullen) jumped awkwardly as start effected. Subsequent to the race Mr E WADE, trainer of PEAKED was informed by Stewards that PEAKED would be required to pass a satisfactory Barrier Trial before being permitted to start again.

NT 5 OPEN HANDICAP 1400 METRES 6 STARTERS

MARKET LINK was withdrawn at 9.55am on 14/3/03 after inspection by Stewards and a veterinarian supplying a certificate for an ulcerated nearside eye. Mrs E WEHR, trainer of STAR DAMSEL lodged a vets certificate of soundness as required by Stewards before being permitted to start. Stewards questioned M CULLEN, rider of EL ALAMADOR and the trainer of the horse R LEECH in regard to the riding tactics. Jockey M CULLEN stated to Stewards that his instructions were to use the horses pace to lead. Trainer Mr LEECH confirmed the instructions. Stewards advised Mr LEECH that he should inform Stewards when there was such a change in racing tactics in future.

NT 7: CLASS 3 HANDICAP 1200 METRES 9 STARTERS

WORSHIPS A DRINK (D Lockwood) was slow to begin. STRATEGIC HIT (M Cullen) and MAISON BUSTE (W Orbell) came together just after the start. STRATEGIC HIT (M Cullen) had difficulty obtaining a run in the last 200 metres of the race.

GENERAL

An adjourned Inquiry was concluded into an incident after passing the winning post in the Class 5 Handicap on 1/3/03 when MAISON BUSTE (NZ) (W Orbell) nearly fell. After taking evidence from jockeys W ORBELL, rider of MAISON BUSTS (NZ) and J DITTMAN, rider of ILKARA. J DITTMAN was charged under ARR137a with careless riding. The careless riding being that he permitted his mount ILKARA to shift in suddenly as the horses passed the winning post, resulting in MAISON BUSTE (NZ) having to be checked severely. Jockey J DITTMAN, rider of ILKARA pleaded guilty to the charge and was fined the sum of $250.
