Stewards questioned D Coffey, rider of DR DANUBE (NZ) about his riding of that gelding.  D Coffey stated that after missing the start the gelding raced ungenerously down the back straight and rounding the turn then in the straight although it made ground it did not flash home.   Stewards also questioned Mr R Merrall trainer, and Mr B Merrall owner of DR DANUBE (NZ).   They stated that they were satisfied with D Coffey’s riding under the circumstances.  Further that DR DANUBE (NZ) had struck its near foreleg and had pulled up distressed.  Stewards notified D Coffey that they were concerned with his lack of vigour on DR DANUBE (NZ) and that in future he would be expected to ride all his mounts in such a manner as to leave no room for query.
