SA Derby day at Morphettville

Race 1

Victorian Hot Girl defied all challenges in the straight to win the opening race in light rain from Mount Kosciusko with Exalted Beau third.

Race 2 - Smoke Free Stakes - LISTED

The feature race of the day was the SA Stakes a race that has been won by classy performers such as Kenmark, Maybe Mahal, Pride of Ingenue, St Clemen's Belle, etc in the past.  This year chestnut filly On Focus continued her winning run in stakes races in storming down the outside to sweep past Pinchbeck to win with Wardroom third.

Race 3

Another Victorian was successful in this race as Circumnavigating dashed away in the final stages to win with ease from Soldado as lightweight Jimmy's Edge filled third place.

Race 4 - Marsh Classic - Group 2

Sylvaner showed her liking for the 1600m at Morphettville in recording her 4 success over the trip and track while it was the third consecutive Adelaide Cup carnival that this wonderful mare has won stakes races.  As in previous victories she swept home strongly to win going away from Devonshire with Tickle My running on for third place.

Race 5 - Carlton Draught Stakes - Group 3

The Carlton Draught is seen this year as the final lead up to the Adelaide Cup for the older horses.  Le Destina dived through in the last few strides to win narrowly from Firetaine with grand veteran Oxford Dollar close up on the rails third as NZer Pillage n Plunder made late ground for a close up fourth.

Race 6 - SA Derby - Group 1

As the clouds drew low and the conditions became even darker as further rain threatened Mummify was sent out the raging favourite and after looking pocketed around the home turn surged along the rails to race away from the field to the cheers of the crowds in the grandstand.  Honest Vicksburg powered home for second place with Lord Woburn looking the perfect future Cups candidate charging home late for third.  Mummify is sired by the champion Jeune from classy SA mare Cleopatra's Girl and was bred and prepared in South Australia for the SA Magic Million Yearling Sales in 2001.

Race 7 - Yallambee Classic - Group 2

Iron mare Toast of the Coast proved that travelling was no problem to her as she recorded yet another victory in the Yallambee Stakes.  Earlier this preparation Toast of the Coast had won at the Sydney Autumn carnival and had earlier success in Melbourne.  Through the gloom of the near dark conditions Toast of the Coast fought strongly to hold off promising grey Super Groove with Prosperous Bid taking third place just ahead of King's Arch and Acee Deecee.

Recent South Australian success through yearlings sold through the Magic Millions Adelaide yearling sale not only include Saturday's feature winner Mummify but in Asia Thunder Man was successful while Caribbean Royale fought strong to hold for victory in Perth.
