RACE 1 – ALCOHOL GO-EASY COLTS, GELDINGS & ENTIRES CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

DEVARAJA DAAN was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, prior to the start, and passed fit to take its place in the field.

MARSCMER (J. Holder) shifted out over the concluding stages and hampered SMYTZER’S LEADER (S. Price).

Over the concluding stages DEVARAJA DAAN (M. Hoppo) shifted in and inconvenienced RENOIC (C. Lever).

RENOIC (C. Lever) had difficulty in obtaining clear ground over the concluding stages.

C. Lever was fined $100 for failing to weigh in following the event.

RACE 2 – SMART CHOICE CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1050 metres

RORY’S TYPHOON was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, prior to the start, and passed fit to take its place in the field.

J. Holder was questioned by the Stewards in relation to the apparent poor performance of RORY’S TYPHOON in today’s event. J. Holder advised the Stewards that approaching the 250 metres RORY’S TYPHOON had been travelling very well, but when asked for an effort over the concluding stages the gelding had failed to respond to his riding. J. Holder further advised that when RORY’S TYPHOON was being ridden out over the concluding stages, the gelding did not stretch out and did not feel comfortable in its action. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of RORY’S TYPHOON revealed the gelding was sore in the off fore fetlock. Mr. A. Gluyas, acting for Trainer Mr. L. M. Macdonald, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required to be lodged prior to the mare accepting for any future event.

RACE 3 – SMOKE-FREE MAIDEN PLATE – 1050 metres

S. Harrison replaced C. Bryant as the rider of CAPALLIN, when no other suitable Apprentice was available.

CAPALLIN (S. Harrison) took charge of its rider en route to the barrier and galloped for some distance before being eventually restrained by its rider. After being inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, CAPALLIN was a late scratching by the Stewards, acting on Veterinary advice, at 1.42 p.m.

Stewards ruled that all monies invested on CAPALLIN be refunded. Bets made on other runners prior to the withdrawal were to be paid on the face value of the ticket less:
Bets for a WIN 5 cents in the dollar, and
Bets for a PLACE 6 cents in the dollar.
SP bets are subject to the deductions.

GREY BILL (W. Kerford) was slow to begin.

BASIL STREETE (S. Price) jumped out at the start onto ETHELTON (C. Buchiw), which shifted out and bumped LUCKY LAURA (M. Henderson).

In the vicinity of the 400 metres LUCKY LAURA (M. Henderson) shifted in sharply.

RACE 4 – PACIFIC REAL ESTATE CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

In the vicinity of the 400 metres KEEP WAITING (R. Faehr), which was commencing to tire, shifted out, at the same time as BIG DEMAND (W. Kerford) shifted in slightly and as a result THE BARON (B. Vale) had to be steadied for a few strides.

RACE 5 – SMOKE-FREE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1600 metres

CATE’S FOREST (NZ) (C. Lever) was slow into stride.

CATE’S FOREST (NZ) (C. Lever) and WHY HURRY (C. Buchiw) both showed a tendency to race ungenerously in the early stages.

NELL’S BELLS (J. Holder) was momentarily held up for a clear run in the vicinity of the 300 metres.

NELL’S BELLS lost its near fore plate in running.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of NELL’S BELLS revealed a lower than expected heart rate and also slight lameness in the off fore leg.

RACE 6 – D & M REAL ESTATE / SABIS F & M CLASS 2 HANDICAP (SPRING SERIES 3) – 1400 metres

AFFINITAS (C. Buchiw) jumped away awkwardly.

RACE 7 – CRITERION TAVERN, GAWLER HANDICAP – 1400 metres

GATTON was a late scratching at 2.18 p.m. by the Stewards, acting on Veterinary advice the gelding was lame in the near fore fetlock.

KEYMARK was inspected by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, prior to the start, and passed fit to take its place in the field.

MOONGARA (T. Creek) was slow to begin.

RACE 7 – CRITERION TAVERN, GAWLER HANDICAP – 1400 metres – cont’d.

PRINCE RAJA (S. Price) and JESTER’S EDGE (B. Vale) were hampered at the start when DHOLIMA’S DAUGHTER (D. Cleaver) jumped in, at the same time as STORA BOLLAR (W. Kerford) jumped out.

RACE 8 – SUNSMART MAIDEN PLATE – 1400 metres

Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow J. Potter, rider of the 4th Placegetter ICE ON MARS, to view the official Stewards head on patrol film. After doing so, in conjunction with Stewards, Correct Weight was duly declared.

PRIMED FOR GLORY (J. Holder) showed a tendency to over-race in the early stages.

Approaching the 200 metres SARATOGA BOY (W. Kerford) and NIJINSKY PRINCE (M. Hoppo) bumped.

ICE ON MARS (J. Potter) and WANNA PLAY CHICKEN (D. Tootell) brushed together on several occasions over the concluding stages.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of PRIMED FOR GLORY revealed the gelding was sore in the off fore leg.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of PEARLY MAE revealed the mare was sore in the lower back.
