RACE 1: AL KHAWAANEEG HURDLE, 3010 metres

CURRENCY ROAD (P Thomas) and GEMQUEE (G Preston) were slow to jump.

After jumping the first hurdle CURRENCY ROAD (P Thomas) shifted out and brushed RISKY VENTURE (B Scott)

Approaching the last hurdle and racing away, RISKY VENTURE (B Scott) was held tight by CURRENCY ROAD (P Thomas) on its outside. P Thomas was reprimanded and advised in future to give riders the room to which they are entitled.

RISKY VENTURE (B Scott) jumped the last hurdle awkwardly.

G Young rider of KASTABON (NZ), reported that his mount, in his opinion, had jarred up during the race.

Correct weight for this event was delayed to permit B Scott to view the official footage in the straight. After doing so B Scot declined to lodge an objection and Correct Weight was duly declared.

KASTABON (NZ) was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding was very lame in the near foreleg. Mr B Bastian, Trainer of KASTABON (NZ), was advised that Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required prior to accepting for a future event.

GEMQUEE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported the mare had sustained a sprained near fore flexor tendon. Mr C McGlinchey, Trainer of GEMQUEE, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to race would be required before accepting for a future event.

G Preston (GEMQUEE) and J Macmillan (COMELY KING) were both advised against using the whip when out of contention and that future breaches would result in a penalty being imposed.

RISKY VENTURE lost its off fore plate during the running of the race.

RACE 2:DOUBLE VICE HANDICAP, 1806 metres

VANDECLARE (J Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly.

On jumping away THE ADMIRAL (NZ) (S Price) was inconvenienced when tightened by HONOURABLE AMI (H McKechnie) which shifted in, and BAUDIN (D Tootell) which shifted out.

Near the 1400 metres VANDECLARE (J Bowditch) was inclined to get its head up and race ungenerously.

Inside the 1300 metres HONOURABLE AMI (H McKechnie) was obliged to steady off the heels of ATLANTIC (W Kerford), which shifted in. W Kerford was reminded of his obligations when shifting ground.

Near the 500 metres CLARENDON’S CURSE (C Bryant) was obliged to steady off the heels of DANE’S REWARD (N Tomizawa), when taken in slightly by CAZIQUE (J Holder).

TONVENOR was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

THE ADMIRAL (NZ) was subjected to an endoscopic examination by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, which indicated a respiratory infection and a mild haemorrhage in the lungs. Mr S Pinfold, representing Trainer Mr M Moroney, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before THE ADMIRAL (NZ) is accepted for a future event.

RACE 3: SPLENDENT HANDICAP, 1304 metres

BEVAN (C Lever) was slow to jump

Near the 900 metres TOWN WATCHER (T Creek) was inclined to race fiercely when being steadied off the heels of FLEET DAPPER (C Lindop).

Approaching the 600 metres PEKOE (D Tootell), which had commenced to race keenly, was obliged to steady off the heels of RUB SHOULDERS (N Tomizawa) and in doing so shifted in, inconveniencing FLIRT WITH DANGER (C Buchiw).

At the entrance to the straight WINNING SPIRIT (M Neilson) shifted out, resulting in PEKOE (D Tootell) being taken out onto TOWN WATCHER (T Creek), and being obliged to steady off the heels of WINNING SPIRIT. Apprentice M Neilson was found guilty of a charge of Careless Riding under ARR 137(a) and suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight on 1 September 2002 and conclude at midnight on 11 September 2002. A period of four meetings.

In the vicinity of the 100 metres BEVAN (C Lever) rolled in, resulting in PEKOE shifting away abruptly and tightening FLIRT WITH DANGER (C Buchiw), onto the hindquarters of SPANISH ARMS (B Claridge), resulting in FLIRT WITH DANGER being steadied and SPANISH ARMS becoming unbalanced.

CULLEN BAY was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 4: SIR LAURENCE HANDICAP, 1000 metres

When questioned regarding his riding of ROMILADA in the early stages of the event and in the straight, Apprentice M Neilson explained that he had been instructed to ride the gelding off the pace. He stated that ROMILADA had jumped well and he not dug the mount up in an attempt to fulfil his instructions. He added the pace of the race had been quick and his mount had not travelled as well as he expected, however, inside the 600 metres he had commenced to ride ROMILADA and it had responded to his riding.

M Neilson further explained that in the vicinity of the 200 metres he had attempted to angle for a run which was available between COURT HERO (NZ) (M Pegus) and CATANGO (C Bryant), however, shortly after committing to the run CATANGO (C Bryant) had rolled out marginally, resulting in ROMILADA being reluctant to accept the run and shifting out onto the heels of COURT HERO and becoming unbalanced. He advised Stewards that he not considered the run, which had been available inside CATANGO, as his mount had been inclined to lay out away from his whip. After considering all matters Stewards advised M Neilson, and his Master Mr B Dunn, that whilst no action was considered on this occasion, in future he would be required to take better options at critical stages of races.

ROMILADA was examined by the Clubs Veterinary Surgeon and was found to be lame in the off fore leg and slight soreness in the offside wither.

Stewards ordered a swab sample to be taken from ROMILADA.

CATANGO was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the mare was slower to recover than normal.

RACE 5: DEVARAJA HANDICAP, 1404m

MISS ZUTPHEN (J Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly and shifted out.

On jumping away MISS VODKA (M Neilson) shifted in onto ANACARDE (M Hoppo). At the same time, FLAWED LOGIC (N Tomizawa) shifted out onto MILANOVA (S Price), resulting in MILANOVA and ANACARDE (M Hoppo) making contact and MILANOVA being inconvenienced.

RED LABELLE (C Bryant) was inclined to race fiercely in the early stages.

In the vicinity of the 500 metres GUCCI GURU (NZ) (J Holder) was held up when racing inside RED LABELLE (C Bryant).

GUCCI GURU (NZ) (J Holder) was inclined to lay in under pressure in the straight.

J Holder the rider of GUCCI GURU (NZ) explained that in contrast to its previous start where it raced forward and settled in running, GUCCI GURU had been inclined to be ungenerous. He stated that approaching the 400 metres he was held up when obliged to wait for RED LABELLE to improve to his outside, and thereafter his mount had raced greenly when placed under pressure.

GUCCI GURU (NZ) was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported lacerations to the both sides of its mouth. Mr L Macdonald, Trainer of GUCCI GURU, was advised the filly would be subjected to a pre-race examination at its next start.

RACE 6: HAPPY GIGGLE HANDICAP, 1254metres

BROTHER’S JEST (D Tootell) and BENARBER (J O’Connor) were slow to jump.

G O’Loughlin, rider of BITOVATUNE, was reprimanded for not weighing in as required under the Rules.

BITOVATUNE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon, who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 7: IRONGATE HANDICAP, 2260 metres

KEY TO MY DREAMS (J Bowditch) was inclined to race fiercely in the early and middle stages.

Inside the 700 metres KEY TO MY DREAMS (J Bowditch), in looking to improve its position, shifted out and applied pressure to BUFFALO POWER (J Holder) for some distance. As a result of not being able to shift BUFFALO POWER and KEY TO MY DREAMS were then obliged to steady off the heels of KING ROYALE (C Lindop).

RACE 8: ALL CHATTER HANDICAP, 1454 metres

SAUVIGNON HILL was withdrawn by Stewards at 9.40am, acting on confirmed advice from its Trainer, Ms G Henderson, that the gelding was lame. Ms Henderson was questioned regarding the late notification of SAUVIGNON HILL, and subsequently fined $100 for having failed to scratch the gelding as required under the Rules.

On jumping away VALIANT CHIEF (J Bowditch) shifted out and inconvenienced COMFORTS (Darren Holland).

OIL CAN ANNIE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

Stewards opened an inquiry into comments allegedly made by Apprentice M. Neilson in the Jockeys’ Room subsequent to being suspended. After taking evidence from Apprentice Neilson and Deputy Steward Mr. D. Gordon, the inquiry was adjourned.
