RACE 1 : CARLTON DRAUGHT HANDICAP - 1100 metres

ELMO’S HERO (NZ) (H. McKechnie), which had been restless in the barriers, refused to jump. Correct Weight for this event was delayed to allow the Stewards to view the official film of the start. After doing so, ELMO’S HERO (NZ) was declared a runner. Mr. D.I. Dodson, trainer of the gelding, was advised that the horse will have to jump to the Stewards’ satisfaction in an organised trial before accepting for any future event.

CHEERS POP (D. Tootell) was slow to jump.

MAVOURTRICE (S. Price) shifted out under riding over the concluding 100 metres.

RACE 2 : GRENFELL HI-FI PLATE - 1000 metres

COSMOPOLITAN (S. Price) jumped away awkwardly.

SIGNOR BRUNO (Darren Holland) was inclined to rear on jumping away.

COSMIC DUDE (J. Bowditch) jumped away awkwardly and shifted in onto LAMYANA (C. Lever) tightening that colt against ROWDY SMYTZER (B. Claridge), which had been taken out by FLEW (W. Kerford).

SOLOMON (C. Buchiw) was inclined to get his head up and race greenly in the middle stages.

Near the 400 metres DANE BELLTAR (J. Holder), in attempting a run outside MRS SPUDLEY (D. Carney), was taken out marginally and improved onto the heels of HIDDEN CACHE (N. Tomizawa), which was inclined to lay out, resulting in DANE BELLTAR shifting out abruptly making heavy contact with ARCHIE BABY (C. Bryant), as that filly rolled in.

Mr. M.J. Whittle, the trainer of ARCHIE BABY, which proved difficult to load, was advised that the filly would be required to trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards in an organised barrier trial prior to accepting for a future event.

RACE 3 : CHANNEL 7 HANDICAP - 1600 metres

DARK HORIZON (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly.

Shortly after the start DARK HORIZON (D. Carney), which was inclined to lay in away from REGICIDE (W. Kerford), shifted in and tightened LAWSON’S STORM (T. Creek), which was obliged to steady.

LAWSON’S STORM (T. Creek) was inclined to race ungenerously in the middle stages as the pace eased.

DARK HORIZON, which performed poorly, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly had a lower than normal heart rate.

RACE 4 : GRENFELL HI-FI HANDICAP - 1200 metres

Shortly after the star ROYAL LIFTOUT (M. Hoppo) shifted out tightening DEVIL IN DISGUISE (B. Claridge) onto INTREPID ASTRONAUT (N. Tomizawa) resulting in both runners being inconvenienced.

Near the 1100 metres DEVIL IN DISGUISE (B. Claridge) was forced to steady off the heels of INTREPID ASTRONAUT (N. Tomizawa), which shifted in. N. Tomizawa was reprimanded and advised to give riders on his inside the room to which they are entitled in future.

RACE 5 : SCHWEPPES HANDICAP - 1100 metres

KINGSFOLD FLAME (J. Bowditch), which had been restless in the gates, was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon and ruled fit to take its place in the field.

GOLD ANTHEM (A. Stead) and RED LABELLE (C. Bryant) jumped away awkwardly.

QUANTUM LEAP (M. Hoppo) shifted out on jumping away and hampered CARAHILL (S. Price).

In the vicinity of the 600 metres RED LABELLE (C. Bryant), which had commenced to race keenly, was obliged to steady off the heels of KINGSFOLD FLAME (J. Bowditch).

Inside the 100 metres FLASH HENRY (B. Claridge), which had been inclined to lay out, shifted out and hampered QUANTUM LEAP (M. Hoppo) taking that filly out onto VICKSBURG (T. Creek).

Subsequent to the race, KINGSFOLD FLAME was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

GOLD ANTHEM was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the filly was showing signs of respiratory distress.

RACE 6 : LIZ DAVENPORT HANDICAP - 2051 metres

Shortly after the start EVANS (W. Kerford) shifted out and inconvenienced YOU’RE JOKING (H. McKechnie).

Shortly after the start RED PADDY (D. Tootell) was taken out by FRENZEL RHOMB (N. Tomizawa) making contact with the hindquarters of SIMPLY MAGICAL (J. Bowditch) resulting in that gelding becoming unbalanced for a short distance.

Near the 200 metres AGINCOURT EXPRESS (A. Stead) shifted in and brushed LAWFUL POKER (B. Claridge).

Approaching the winning post YOU’RE JOKING (H. McKechnie) shifted away from AGINCOURT EXPRESS (A. Stead), which was inclined to lay in, and contacted CLARENDON’S CURSE (C. Bryant).

FRENZEL RHOMB lost its off fore plate during the running of the race.

RED ASTAIRE was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported the gelding to be lame in the near foreleg. Mr. R.F. Moore, the trainer of RED ASTAIRE, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required before accepting for a future event.

RACE 7 : POPE PACKAGING HANDICAP - 1600 metres

NOTHING BUT GOLD reared as the gates opened and as a result that gelding’s rider, B. Claridge, was unbalanced for a short distance.

NEWTOWN JET (USA) (S. Price), which jumped awkwardly, shifted in and shortly after was inconvenienced by NONE FOR THE ROAD (J. O’Connor), which rolled out.

After passing the winning post STARBUCKS dislodged its rider J. Bowditch. J. Bowditch was uninjured in this incident.

STARBUCKS was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

NEWTOWN JET (USA) was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported no visible abnormalities.

RACE 8 : RADIO TAB HANDICAP - 1200 metres

MR. DONALDSON was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon on arrival on course and ruled fit to start.

LANDSLIP (D. Tootell) jumped away awkwardly.

MR. DONALDSON (J. Burgess) and FINNISS RHYTHM (M. Hoppo) were slow to jump.

Near the 1000 metres FLEET DAPPER (H. McKechnie) was obliged to steady off the heels of FIESTA SHOW (C. Lindop), which shifted in.

Inside the 900 metres FINNISS RHYTHM (M. Hoppo) commenced to race fiercely and approaching the 700 metres improved onto the heels of OPEN THE TILL (S. Price) at the same time as FLEET DAPPER (H. McKechnie) rolled in onto OPEN THE TILL resulting in that gelding losing its hind legs, becoming awkward and contacting the running rail. In being restrained FINNISS RHYTHM continued to race fiercely, shifted out, clipping the heels of FLEET DAPPER, and brushed BARLEES (B. Claridge).

S. Price, the rider of OPEN THE TILL, reported that the gelding was reluctant to stretch out in the straight. OPEN THE TILL was examined by the Club’s Veterinary Surgeon who reported it to be lame in the off foreleg.

Miss K. Huxtable, the trainer of FINNISS RHYTHM, which raced erratically, was advised that a repetition of that gelding’s behaviour may lead to action being taken against it. Miss Huxtable will be interviewed at a later date to explain why FINNISS RHYTHM was removed from the course prior to the required time.
