Race 1 - STOCKDALE MAIDEN PLATE (1) 1500 metres:

On jumping away "WINGFIELD" shifted out and bumped "REDSKIN" out on to "PRINCE ALI" which in turn made contact with the hindquarters of "AGOSTINI".
Shortly after the start "REDSKIN" and "PRINCE ALI" had to be checked when tightened for room between "WINGFIELD" which shifted out slightly and "AGOSTINI" which shifted in when laying in.
Passing the 1300 metres "DEE JAY TEE" had to be checked when tightened for room between "KAMPIN (NZ)" and "WINGFIELD" which initially shifted in away from "AGOSTINI" and was then taken in by that gelding. P. Mertens, rider of "AGOSTINI" was notified to exercise greater care when shifting ground in future.
Approaching the 800 metres "MENTMORE LASS" which had a tendency to lay out had to be checked to avoid the heels of "KAMPIN (NZ)" which shifted in away from "WINGFIELD". During the incident "MENTMORE LASS" struck the running rail. R. Cartwright, rider of "MENTMORE LASS" stated that after being tightened near the 800 metres the mare was reluctant to stretch out for the remainder of the race.
Rounding the home turn "NEON MOON" had to be checked off the heels of "MENTMORE LASS" when that mare weakened.
V. Caddy, rider of "KAMPIN (NZ)" the second placegetter, stated that several times in the straight he had to stop riding and straighten his mount due to his mount laying in under pressure. V. Caddy added that approaching the winning post he stopped riding momentarily as his mount was shifting in and getting close to the heels of "AGOSTINI".
N. Callow, rider of "THORPY BOY" stated that he sat quietly on the gelding in the home straight as "THORPY BOY" had failed to respond to his riding from the middle stages of the race. A subsequent veterinary examination of "THORPY BOY" revealed no apparent abnormalities.

Race 2 - STOCKDALE MAIDEN PLATE (2) 1500 metres:

Shortly after the start "LIGHTMAN" was badly hampered when tightened for room between "SANDY'S BID" which initially shifted out and "DIAMOND JAKE" which shifted in.
Rounding the home turn "LIGHTMAN" was held up for a short distance.
In the early part of the straight Miss V. Arnott, rider of "MANGINA MAN" dropped her whip.
Near the 200 metres R. Cartwright, rider of "PHANTOM RUN" dropped his whip.
Throughout the race "BOMZAWAY" hung out and proved difficult to ride.

Race 3 - STRATFORD SUPER VOBIS 3YO FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE 1200 metres:

On jumping away "MISS HENNY PENNY" was hampered when tightened for room between "GIRLS DAY" and "AMBROSINE" which shifted in abruptly.
After passing the 200 metres "ELOQUENT STYLE" shifted out slightly and brushed "GIRLS DAY" which in turn shifted out and brushed "MISS HENNY PENNY".
N. Callow, rider of "AMBROSINE" which performed poorly, stated that the filly never travelled well throughout the race and was a beaten horse when placed under pressure rounding the home turn. A subsequent veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities.

Race 4 -SPRING SUPER VOBIS 3YO C & G MAIDEN PLATE 1200 metres:

Acting on a confirmed telephone call from Mr G. Dalziel, trainer of "TAX DODGE" who stated that the float transporting the gelding to the course had encountered difficulties and as "TAX DODGE" would not arrive on course at the required time, Stewards ordered the withdrawal of "TAX DODGE" at 12.35 p.m.
Approaching the 1000 metres "END OF THE LINE" had to be eased when tightened for room between "PHOENIX RULE" and "EXTRATEGIC" due to both horses shifting ground.
In the early stages of the race "EXTRATEGIC" overraced.
Rounding the home turn "MAJESTIC RADIANCE" had difficulty obtaining a clear run.
Near the 200 metres "LACRISTI EXPRESS" was hampered by "SILENT WATERS" which shifted in abruptly.
After passing the 200 metres "BLUE LANE" was inconvenienced on two occasions by "RIPEZ" which shifted out under pressure.

Race 5 - OCTOBER CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1700 metres:

Whilst parading in the mounting yard Mr B. Baldwin, registered stable hand, representing Mr Tony Vasil, trainer of "ALLAVAY" alerted rider B. Rawiller that a small pad had been omitted from the saddling of the gelding. Subsequently B. Rawiller was re-weighed and "ALLAVAY" was resaddled and took its place in the field. This incident caused the start of the race to be delayed.
Mr B. Baldwin was found guilty of the charge of negligence, the negligence being that he omitted to include in the saddling of "ALLAVAY" a light pad. Mr Baldwin was fined the sum of $500. In arriving at their penalty, Stewards took into account Mr Baldwin's very clean record in racing over a long period of time and that he had alerted the Stewards to his mistake.
On jumping away "ALLAVAY" and "ACRIMONY" knuckled.
In the early part of the straight "KENRIVA" had to be eased to avoid the heels of "NEVER BUY BETTER" which shifted in abruptly. "NEVER BUY BETTER" then had a tendency to lay in for the remainder of the race.

Race 6 - SCHWEPPES HANDICAP 1200 metres:

On arrival at the course "LADY MULROY" which had sustained a cut to its forehead in the float en route to the course, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon who passed the mare fit to run.
At the entrance to the straight "KEHLSTEIN" was disappointed for a run between "ENERGY ABOUNDS" and "GALLOPINI" where there was insufficient room.
Near the 200 metres "ROCKY SUNRISE" had to be eased when tightened for room by "BALMURANZ (NZ)" which shifted in away from "MYSTIC ELLE".
For the majority of the home straight "LADY MULROY" laid in and proved difficult to ride.
During the running of the race "KEHLSTEIN" lost its off fore plate.

Race 7 - LLOWALONG CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1100 metres:

On jumping away "SKILL" knuckled.
Subsequent to the event "SKILL" which performed below expectations, was examined by the Club's Veterinary Surgeon who reported no abnormalities.

Race 8 - AYGEE GIPPSLAND CLASS 4 HANDICAP 1700 metres:

On jumping away "SPASMODIC" knuckled.
Rounding the home turn "PHENOMENON" had to be eased when tightened for room between "DOCTOR DANZIG" and "MAYBE ARCH" both of which shifted ground.

Race 9 - GLENALADALE CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1400 metres:

No report.

SUMMARY

FINES Race 3 - Mr P. Moody, trainer of "GOLD AND FAME" was fined the sum of $30 for using wrong colours on the filly.
Race 5 - Mr B. Baldwin - fined $500 for negligence in saddling "ALLAVAY".
Race 7 - Mr S. Webb, trainer of "NOBLE KEN" was fined the sum of $50 for the late notification of L.Milham as rider of the gelding.
