Guineas May Prove SA Form Pointer

1116dextrous.jpg (15195 bytes)Punters could do well to remember last Saturday's Group 2 Sandown Guineas as a future pointer to the Adelaide Cup carnival next year.

Many of the young three-year-olds who tackled the 1600m of the Guineas will be aimed at either the Group 1 Malaysia Airlines Derby or the Group 1 Feltex Carpets SA Oaks - both over 2500m at Morphettville next May.

In the Guineas, Dextrous defeated Lawson's Storm with Cool Azz finishing third. Running a game fourth was the inexperienced Umacall after drawing a wide gate and facing the breeze throughout.

The John Hawkes stable, who train Dextrous, have already indicated the filly will be aimed at the South Australian Oaks, while David Baflour, trainer of the runner-up, will aim Lawson's Storm at the Derby.

"He arrived home from Melbourne today and will go to the paddock later this week," Balfour said.

1116dextrous2.jpg (13937 bytes)"He is still very green and immature and will benefit from a good spell, so he'll go out now and come back for the Derby and the lead-up races."

Stablemate Cobamuse, who finished eighth in the Guineas, will be aimed at shorter races.

"He really didn't run the trip, so he'll be aimed at shorter three-year-old races - like the Yallambee Stakes - over the Adelaide Cup carnival."

Umacall, having just his fourth start in the Guineas, has already gone to the paddock and will also be aimed at the Adelaide Cup carnival next year, although he has been nominated for the Group 1 Cadbury Guineas (1600m) at Flemington in February.

"He did a great job in the Guineas," trainer Gordon Richards said. "He had to do all the work and the horse that went with him dropped right out of it. He was entitled to as well, but kept fighting on. He copped a bump from the winner near the turn and became unbalanced but, after straightening up he was actually coming again on the line.

1116dextrous3.jpg (12210 bytes)"Greg Childs got off him and suggested we try him as a stayer next time in and I've always felt he would appreciate a bit of ground. We are leaning to the Derby in Adelaide but the Cadbury Guineas is also under consideration. We'll make a decision as it gets closer."

Cool Azz, who finished third in the Guineas, will not be tested as a stayer next time in and will be aimed at the Cadbury Guineas.

"I think 1600m is as far as he wants," trainer Brain Cox said. "He's in the paddock now and will be out for a month before returning late in the year."

Others from the Guineas, such as the Lee Freedman-trained Mummify (Jeune - Cleopatra's Girl by At Talaq) and the Tony McEvoy trained Larrocha (Danehill - Kensington Gardens by Grosvenor) are likely candidates for South Australia's classic three-year-old events next May.

They, of course, may have a hard time overcoming strong stayer Hydrometer should trainer Leon Macdonald choose to run the gelding in Adelaide. The VRC Derby runner-up will either be aimed at the local staying events or the AJC Derby in the Autumn.
