RACE 1 – CLEANAWAY MAIDEN PLATE - 1200 metres

BIG IMPRA (J. Lyon) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 700 metres YOUNG ROSE (Darren Holland) commenced to hang out and continued to hang out for the remainder of the race and finished extremely wide in the straight. As a consequence Darren Holland was unable to ride YOUNG ROSE out to the finish of the race. Subsequent to the race a veterinary inspection of YOUNG ROSE revealed that it was suffering from soreness in its off side lower back and showing signs of soreness in the forelegs. Mr. J. Cornell, representing trainer Mr. A. McEvoy, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required and the filly would also be required to complete a satisfactory official barrier trial before accepting for a future event.

In the vicinity of the 250 metres OUTBACK GOLD (D. Carney) shifted out abruptly and as a result ORA SMYTZER (J. Bowditch) had to be eased.

Subsequent to the race a veterinary examination of RED TRICK revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 2 – DOUBLE VICE/SABIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE - 1050 metres

The start of this race was delayed due to REGAL FLUTE (J. Holder), ZEDOS (J. Maund) and BLACK CURRENCY (W. Kerford) all being difficult to load into the barriers. Mr. D. McMahon, representing Mr. W. Tonkin, trainer of BLACK CURRENCY, Mr. L. Macdonald, trainer of REGAL FLUTE, and Mr. R. Paech, trainer of ZEDOS, were warned that should their respective horses prove difficult to load in the barrier in future, action may be taken against them.

MOON ROCK (B. Grimston) was slow to begin.

Racing to the 600 metres ARMED AND READY (J. Lyon) had to be eased to avoid the heels of LADY ASHLYN (J. Potter) when that filly shifted out.

RACE 3 – DANETOP CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1050 metres

SO LATE (J. O’Connor) was slow to begin.

J. O’Connor, the rider of SO LATE, explained that the gelding had been disappointing throughout the race and that after jumping away awkwardly had raced with its head up and had failed to respond to his riding at any stage of the race.

Racing from the 900 metres to the 700 metres GOLD ABACUS (B. Claridge) had to be steadied on several occasions to avoid the heels of MONSOON BABY (Darren Holland).

On return to scale BARLEES became cast in the dismounting stall and as a result its rider, J. Bowditch, was dislodged. BARLEES suffered minor abrasions during the incident. J. Bowditch was examined by the Club’s Doctor, who declared him unfit to ride for the remainder of the day, and he was conveyed to hospital for observation.

RACE 4 – BURNS CEILINGS & BUILDING SUPPLIES HIGHWEIGHT CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1950 metres

SPELL OF DANE (M. Madden) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 400 metres BOWOOD ROAD (S. McDermott) rolled in inconveniencing SPELL OF DANE (M. Madden). Shortly after this incident SPELL OF DANE, which was weakening, shifted in, resulting in ATLANTIC (J. Mansell) being taken in and NASTIVE EDITION (D. Howard), being inconvenienced.

G. Dorol, the rider of RUBITON ROYALE, explained that racing to the 200 metres he had elected to take a run to the inside of DANE’S REWARD (G. Young) but due to that gelding rolling back onto the rail, RUBITON ROYALE was disappointed for a run over the concluding 100 metres.

RACE 5 – SANDERS SEED CLEANERS CLASS 5 HANDICAP - 1600 metres

BAUDIN (M. Neilson) jumped away awkwardly.

Racing to the 700 metres GO SPIDER (B. Claridge) became unbalanced and had to be eased to avoid the heels of KING KEEPERS (J. Potter) when that gelding rolled in.

Racing to the 600 metres and to the 500 metres, GO SPIDER (B. Claridge) was held up for some distance and lost ground due to KING KEEPERS (J. Potter) weakening.

RACE 6 – FENTON’S MACHINERY CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1400 metres

AWAY WITH FAIRIES (J. Holder) jumped away awkwardly and was slow to begin. Trainer, Mr. L. Macdonald, was advised that a repetition of the mare’s performance could lead to action being taken against it.

Racing to the 1200 metres TAX HALO (J. Potter) laid in and inconvenienced VALIANT CHIEF (M. Neilson). Shortly after this incident NAFIR (NZ) (B. Grimston) shifted in resulting in TAX HALO having to be checked to avoid the heels of NAFIR (NZ). VALIANT CHIEF also had to be eased to avoid the heels of NAFIR (NZ). B. Grimston was advised that, whilst not entirely responsible, he should exercise greater care in future.

S. Price, the rider of UNBRIDLED LAD, explained to the Stewards that he had been hampered from the 600 metres until the 400 metres due to SHUKU HAI (N. Tomizawa) shifting out on several occasions.

Racing to the 200 metres SAN SONATA (NZ) (J. Lyon) shifted in and inconvenienced DANA’S GIFT (NZ) (W. Kerford) and shortly after SAN SONATA (NZ) shifted away from DANA’S GIFT (NZ), resulting in TAX HALO (J. Potter) having to be eased and shift outwards to obtain a clear run.

Shortly after the 200 metres AWAY WITH FAIRIES (J. Holder) was disappointed for a run and had to ease to avoid the heels of BENARDO (D. Tootell).

KAZOO (NZ) suffered a laceration to its off fore pastern.

RACE 7 – ELDERS REAL ESTATE CLASS 3 HANDICAP - 1200 metres

HOUSE GUEST (S. Price) was slow to begin.

MISS PUBLICITY (N. Tomizawa) and LADY GLENLEIGH (D. Carney) jumped away awkwardly.

RACE 8 – SMARTCHOICE MAIDEN PLATE - 1600 metres

SENDIN’ ME GREY (W. Kerford) was difficult to load and as a result that gelding’s trainer, Miss M. Taylor, was warned that a repetition of its barrier manners could lead to action being taken against it.

On jumping away DOT COM FEVER (D. Carney) and BELIKELY (J. Maund) bumped.

Approaching the 400 metres KENTON KNIGHT (B. Vale) had to be eased to avoid the heels of IRISH BLESSING (C. Lindop), when that mare rolled in.

Racing inside the 400 metres IRISH BLESSING (C. Lindop) was disappointed for a run and had to avoid the heels of SOUND TYCOON (P. Gatt).
