Wednesday's Balaklava Races Report

After preparing four winners at Gawler on Sunday trainer Tony McEvoy took his four day winning tally to seven when his charges provided him with a trio of wins at Balaklava on Wednesday.

McEvoy had his first success when the Simon Price mount La Bouche, the $1.60 favourite, was the one length winner of the second event which was run over 1200 metres.

A three year old Royal Academy gelding from the Dayfur mare Nanouche, La Bouche began well and, racing wide for the entire journey, beat the Phillip Cole charge- the Damien Robinson guided Owdatay $9. The Catcher $6 was a neck away third for Lisa Ryan and Matthew Neilson.

The apprentice Claudia Lions ridden Protector $6 scored a one and a quarter length win in the 1300 metre seventh event and gave Tony McEvoy win number two.

From the Rory’s Jester matron Risky Banter, Protector, a three year Stratum gelding was prominent throughout and finished the event with a strong outside run to defeat his stablemate, the Michael Hoppo mount Arpes Cougar $18.

Starting at $13 Roll On Bai was another short half head away filling the minor placing for Jon O’Connor and Matthew Neilson.

Combining with jockey Matthew Neilson the $2.60 punter’s choice Evidentia had a winning margin of two and a half lengths in the 1600 metre last race and gave Tony McEvoy his third winner.

Being one of the last to begin and gradually making his way through the field before powering home down the centre of the track the Redoute’s Choice sired Evidentia, from Saucy Nell a Marauding mare, beat the Kirsten McGowan cared for apprentice Krystal Bishop mount Arezzo $14. Catcher Line $6 was a length away third for Sue Nolan and Todd Pannell.

Apprentice Claudia Lions brought up the first leg of her double when the Shane Oxlade trained Jestquill $14 was the long neck winner of the 1200 metre first race.

From the Brondesbury matron Brondquill and fathered by Rory’s Jester, Jestquill was well placed and came with a storming outside run to beat Moving Money $2.80 for co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and stable jockey Clare Lindop.

Gordon Richards and Matthew Neilson were associated with Zen $3.20 who was a farther one and three quarter lengths away third.

Clare Lindop rode the first leg of her double when the Ken Sweeney mentored Our Belvoir $4.40 was three quarters of a length winner of the third race which was contested 1050 metres.

The progeny of the American bred Bianconi from the daughter of Euclase, Classy Looker, Our Belvolr came from a mid field position and, with a strong inside passage in the straight, beat the Sam Burford trained Troy Baker ridden Shanpanichi, the $3 favourite. Nic’s Buddy $7 was another three and a quarter lengths away third for John Dunn and Matthew Neilson.

Riding for the Leon Macdonald/Andrew Gluyas stable Clare Lindop completed her double when the $2.80 public elect Tigress Joy was the half head victor of the 1400 sixth race.

Part owned by Adam Sangster the Hold That Tiger three year old filly from a Made Of Gold mare Agalia, Tigress Joy came from sixth and with Lindop steering a centre course for the concluding stages Tigress Joy beat the Simon Casey prepared apprentice Jordon Frew ridden Gift Of Knowledge $10. You Owe Us $4.20 was a farther one and quarter lengths away third for Tony McEvoy and Simon Price.

Teaming with trainer John MacMillan rider Matthew Neilson rode the first leg of his double when the $7 chance Maktuub was the five length victor of the 1050 metres fifth race.

A Fubu six year old gelding out of the Canny Lad mare Sara, Maktuub was well placed and beat Orchestral, the $2.80 favourite, for rider Simon Price and horse carer Simon Casey. A farther head away filling the minor placing was Liquid Nails $41 for Ken Sweeney and Ben Hoppo.

On a three month loan to trainer Jon O’Connor apprentice Nathan Rose scored a three quarters of length victory on the Jon O’Connor trained Smile Magic $5 in the 1400 metre fourth race.

Owned by O’Connor’s partner Kim Harrison the Magic Albert sired Smile Magic, from Yule Smile a Rory’s Jester mare, came from third and beat the Mark Kavanagh prepared Chad Lever ridden Set To Excite $3.40.

The $2.70 punter’s choice, Where’s My Wagon, was another head away third for Kirsty Cordon and Simon Price.
