Lindop Claims John Letts Medal

Thoroughbred Racing SA recognised its top performers for the 2010/11 season at its annual Industry Awards and Hall of Fame induction at Allan Scott Park Morphettville yesterday.

More than 450 people, including the best of the best in SA racing, turned out to honour the achievements of the state’s top horses, trainers, jockeys and apprentices – with prizes awarded to the industry’s finest performers, both past and present.

Paul Gatt took out the top award for Metropolitan Jockey of the Year while Justin Potter won the equivalent for country racing. Steven Pateman was recognised as the Jumps Jockey of the Year taking home the EJ Mooney Medal, while the up and coming talent of Jordan Frew was recognised as he took out the Apprentice of the Year Award.

Metropolitan Trainer of the Year was Mark Kavanagh, while David Jolly won the Country Trainer of the Year honour after another strong season.

A new addition to this year’s awards was the John Letts Medal - which recognises excellence in riding and outstanding achievements at all race meetings throughout the state - with none other than Clare Lindop becoming the inaugural winner.

This year’s inductees to SA Racing’s Hall of Fame included champion horse Light Fingers and renowned trainer David Hayes. Associate Robert A Lee was also recognised with the industry’s top honour.

“The annual Awards and Hall of Fame induction is easily the SA racing industry’s most celebrated event – and it is something that incites much competition and friendly rivalry throughout the season,” Thoroughbred Racing SA Chief Executive Jim Watters said.

“This year we’ve seen an extremely even racing season, so it was great to see the winners prevail in what was a particularly tight competition.

“The addition of the inaugural John Letts Medal was an added bonus to this year’s event and we’re thrilled that we can honour one of South Australia’s past racing greats while looking to the future of racing - and star jockey Clare Lindop – with the introduction of this medal.”

Themed ‘the best of South Australia’ – guests enjoyed tasting some of the state’s finest food and wine throughout the afternoon.
