Sunday's Gawler Races Report

A start in the Listed Murray Bridge Cup in October awaits Sandhill Prince who was the two and a half length winner of the Gawler Cup which was run over 1509 metres at Gawler on Sunday.

The Sam Turner trained Staaraq gelding from the Fixed Flush mare Miss Thornhill, Sandhill Prince $9, ridden by Dominic Tourneur, tracked the unplaced Xaieta into the race at the 500 metre mark and went on to defeat the Karen Brynes trained Lauren Stojakovic ridden Bergstrom $51.

The Ken Sweeney prepared Libby Hopwood ridden Rowdy Rocker $9 was another one and a quarter lengths away third.

Sandhill Prince will have another run in a middle distance race prior to starting in the Murray Bridge Cup, a race that he has contested the last two years finishing second on both occasions.

Matthew Neilson brought up the first leg of a double when he scored a two length win on the $2.05 favourite Imperial Fury in the 1109 metre opening event.

Being under the care of Murray Bridge trainer Stuart Padman the Golden Lake sired Imperial Fury, form the Made of Gold mare Dubloons, led all the way and beat the $11 chance Bella Dolce for trainer Barry Dunn and rider Dominic Tourneur.

Full of Cache $11 was a farther three quarters of a length away filling the minor placing for Phillip Stokes and Paul Gatt.

Imperial Fury will now progress to a 0-68 event over 1100 metres at Morphettville in a fortnight.

Matthew Neilson brought up an early double when the Phillip Stokes prepared Sophielicious, the $2 favourite, was the two length winner of the 1109 metre second race.

A four year old Canny Lad mare from the Flying Spur matron Anything But Love, Sophielious led all the way and will now progress to a similar race in town in the near future.

Sophielicious defeated the Barry Dunn prepared Dominic Tourneur ridden Rolling Stones $4.40 who finished one and three quarter lengths ahead of Half Back Flank $17 for Leon Macdonald, Andrew Gluyas and Clare Lindop.

Academy Belle $4.80 brought up the first leg of a double for rider Dominic Tourneur in race three which was contested over 1109 metres.

Being under the care of David Aldridge Academy Belle, from the Hurricane Sky mare Category Zero and sired by the USA bred Royal Academy, fought out a tight finish after being on the pace throughout to beat the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas trained Clare Lindop ridden Morse Code, the $3.60 favourite, by a half neck.

Smarty Wells $81 was a farther three quarters of a length away third for local trainer Graham Fryer and Justin Potter.

Trainer Roslyn Day brought up her second win in four days when the Adrian Patterson ridden Handsome As $10 was the head winner of race four which was contested over 1709 metres.

An Akhadan four year old gelding from the Honour and Glory mare It’s Raining Mares, Handsome As came from well back to beat the Stuart Gower trained Michael Hoppo ridden That’s All Gold $13.

Fossicking, the $3.80 favourite, was another three and three quarter lengths away third for Ken Sweeney and Paul Gatt.

Having its third start and saluting the judge for the first time Perfect Punch, the $2 favourite, gave co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and rider Clare Lindop a long neck victory in race five which was run over 1509 metres.

Coming from a midfield position the Starcraft three year old colt from the Tayasu Tsuyoshi mare Tayasu Run, finished too strongly for the Craig Stewart prepared David Tootell ridden Kinselmac Manner $6.

Son of Caesar $5 was a farther three quarters of a length away third for Phillip Stokes and Dominic Tourneur.

Perfect Punch will have its next run in a 1600 metre three year old race at Morphettville in a fortnight.

Starting from the previously successful barrier four Bell Ringer gave apprentice Libby Hopwood a well overdue win in the 2109 metre sixth race.

A $12 chance, trained by John Hickmott, the Taos sired Bell Ringer, from Bellawella a Bluebird mare, led all the way and beat Athena Pegasus $4.40 for local trainer Gary Searle and rider Adrian Patterson.

After looking a threat quite late in the event the $3 favourite Penn Station was placed third for Leon Macdonald, Andrew Gluyas and Clare Lindop.

The Rock of Gibraltar sired Addiction to Rock $4 came from a near last position to give trainer Mark Minervini a length win and rider Adrian Patterson his second victory for the afternoon in race seven which was run over 1209 metres.

From the Blevic mare Bellediction, Addiction to Rock powered home to defeat the Sheila Arnold mentored Dominic Tourneur guided Sense of Sun, the $2.45 favourite.

Ciro Prince $26 was another half head away third for Craig Stewart and Mitchell Speers.

The association of co-trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas together with jockey Clare Lindop were successful when Star of Topaze $5 was the two and three quarters of a length winner of the 1509 metre final event.

A Sarcraft mare out of the Woodman mare Speedy Topaze, Star Topaze was well placed and beat the Paul Beshara trained Adrian Patterson ridden Alice Longing $10.

Tanqueray Lady $6 was another long head away third for David Jolly and Dominic Tourneur.
