Alcopop's Campaign Turns Into A Fizzer

AlcopopAfter a couple of encouraging lead-up runs, Alcopop will not contest either of his main spring targets - the Caulfield Cup (2400m) or Cox Plate (2040m) - after a flat performance in last Saturday's Group One Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

However the seven-year-old gelding may still play a part over the spring carnival.

Alcopop, who started a $4.80 favourite in the 2009 Melbourne Cup (3200m), finished last beaten 11-1/2 lengths in last Saturday's Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

Trainer Jake Stephens advised Racing Victoria stewards on Monday that the horse would return to South Australia to freshen up, where a decision on his entire spring campaign will be made.

"We'll check him out over the next few days and decide whether he has a good spell or we continue on," Stephens told The Advertiser.

"We could look for a race around the 2000m mark later in the spring but nothing over that.

"We'll just wait and see how he recovers."

Alcopop has raced 26 times for nine wins and three seconds with his most recent win coming in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks in August.

He then finished second to Rekindled Interest in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley before his Caulfield Stakes flop.
