Former Hong Kong Galloper Running for the Members

City racing breaks from tradition this weekend and takes place at Victoria Park for the Radio TAB Sunday Family Race Day.

The long, green lawns of the city course provide the perfect location for a relaxing family picnic. There’s a live band booked to entertain between races and free rides will keep the kids occupied.

The most interesting runner of the day is former Hong Kong galloper Royal Liftout in the Radio TAB Class 6 Handicap, who makes his Australian debut for Tony McEvoy.

The gelding hasn’t raced since January after breaking down, and has a win and five placings from 15 starts.

"He was bred at Lindsay Park and went to Hong Kong as a yearling," McEvoy said. "He did win a race there and placed a few times but returned after an injury. He seems sound now, though.

"He’s a horse that is probably best suited up to a mile but he does have a bit of dash, so it will be interesting to see how he measures up here."

The 40 participants in the SAJC’s "Young Members Racing Group" will get to see their colours for the first time with Around The Block in the Sports Bet Breakfast Class 1 Handicap.

The syndicate, comprising new young members, race two horses with Lindsay Park, the other Roister.

"It’s a fabulous concept and we’ll be striving to make it successful," trainer Tony McEvoy said. "We need more new blood in racing, especially younger people."

The YMRG (Young Members Racing Group) will have a marquee on the grandstand lawn to cheer home their first runner.
