Morphettville Races Report

A $60,000 purchase at this year’s Melbourne Yearling Sales, Family Portrait opened its winning account at its first start for Mick Huxtable and Simon Price in the opening event at Morphettville on Saturday.

Starting at $5 the Excellent Art filly, from the Rubiton mare Amen Ruby, came from the rear of the field to beat Love of Liberty $5 for Euroa trainer David Hayes and rider Paul Gatt.

Monica Kate $14 was a short half head away third for Gordaon Richards and Michael Hoppo.

Settling in second position and getting to the front after the runners turned for home Honourable Kind scored a four and three quarter length win giving trainer Lloyd Kennewell and the first leg of a treble and rider Paul Gatt the first leg of a double.

Starting the $2.40 favourite the Honours List sired Honourable Kind, from the Housebuster mare Some Kinda Quick, settled in second position and went to the lead on the home turn and defeated the Vince Bradley mentored Shayne Cahill ridden Brad Star $7.

Goldridge $8 was another two and a quarter lengths away third for John Hickmott and Nathan Rose.

Simon Price scored his second win for the afternoon when he rode the Mark Kavanagh trained Meshmaker $3.50 to a two and three quarter length win in race three which was contested over 1200 metres.

From the Golden Missile mare She’s Double Gold and fathered by Testa Rossa, Meshmaker came from a midfield position and beat the David Balfour prepared Scott Westover ridden St Gabriel $51.

Nestus $4.60 was a farther four and three quarter lengths away third for Mark Young and Billy Egan.

The combination of trainers Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas and rider Clare Lindop scored a short neck win when Miss With Attitude $5 won the 1000 metre fourth event.

A Galileo mare from the Flying Spur mare Sizzie’em, Miss Attitude came from a better than midfield position and beat the Lloyd Kennewell trained Shayne Cahill piloted Ocsmepop $5.50.

Fast Frank $11, who led until the shadow of the post, was a long head away third for Daniel Clarken and his apprentice Lauren Stojakovic.

The consistent Obsidian Dragon gave trainer David Balfour and his apprentice Scott Westover a long neck win in race five which was run over 1050 metres.

Leading all the way the Hiden Dragon four year old mare, from the Monde Bleu mare Aradina, beat the Gavin Clarke trained Nathan Rose ridden Dream Face $5.

Sequallan $13 was a farther long neck away third for Stuart Gower and Michael Hoppo.

The win of Loukoumi brought up a double for trainer Lloyd Kennewell in the 1800 metre sixth race. Starting the rank outsider at $20 and having the services of Shayne Cahill the Grandera sired Loukoumi, from the Prince Echo mare Ettu Blu, settled well and, maintaining a forward position, beat Bel Sir $5 for Neil Dyer and Michael Hoppo.

Clearly Passionate $4.80 was another half length away filling the minor placing for Gary Searle and Adrian Patterson.

Trainer Lloyd Kennewell brought up a trio of wins when The Eighth Maker gave jockey Paul Gatt a double in the 1200 metre Listed City of Marion Stakes.

Starting at $4 the Clangalang sired six year old, from the Bluebird mare Floral Emblem, came from a midfield position and powered home to beat the Dennis O’Leary prepared Jason Holder ridden Outlandish Lad $14.

The Victorian visitor Rocking Force $3.20 was a farther two and a quarter lengths away third for Mandy Shillito and Stephen King.

Jockey Jason Holder made a triumphant return to SA racing when he steered the Leon Macdonald / Andrew Gluyas trained Snip ‘N’ Run $15 to a length win in the final event of 1200 metres.

From the Covetous mare Run For Cover the Snippetson sired Snip ‘N’ Run was no farther back than third and defeated Alchemy’s Eight $7 for mentor Karen Byrnes and rider Adrian Patterson.

Juliet’s Princess $6.50 was another length away third for Leon Macdonald / Andrew Gluyas and Clare Lindop.
