Morphettville Races Report

Melbourne trainer Robert Smerdon continued his winning streak in Adelaide when the $1.30 favourite Ice Planker scored a five length victory in the opening event of 1000 metres on the Parks track at Morphettville on Thursday.

Having a second to his credit at Cranbourne, his only start at before Thursday's winning effort, the Clare Lindop guided Bradbury's Luck sired gelding from a Shinko Forest mare Rejuvenate Lass, Ice Planker was an all the way winner.

Starting at $17 Karacatis finished second for trainer Richard Jolly and Paul Gatt. The $21 priced El Prado Gold was a neck away third for David Balfour and his apprentice Scott Westover.

In a head and head struggle in the straight the $3.30 equal favourite, the Jon O' Connor trained apprentice Nathan Rose ridden Flying Away, had a head to spare over the other equal favourite, the Stuart Padman mentored Matthew Nielson guided Imperial Fury in race two which was contested over 1000 metres.

A three year old, Flying Away is a daughter of Flying Spur and is from the Seeking the Gold matron Seeking a Way. Starting at $21 Smooth Excelerator was a farther two lengths away third for David Aldridge and apprentice Jordon Frew.

From the Snippets mare Recollection and fathered by Barely a Moment, Quick Thoughts $8 gave horse carer Ken Sweeny and apprentice Scott Westover a three quarters of a length win in the 1250 metre third race.

Being always handy to the lead Quick Thoughts defeated the David Hayes mentored Dean Holland steered Roma Giaconda $5. The $7 returned Drafted was a farther long neck way third for Mark Minervini and Simon Price.

Having a length winning margin and starting at $51 Resenda gave trainer Claudette Rose and jockey Glen Davis a victory in race four which was run over 1400 metres.

The progeny of the American bred Mugharreb and the Stargazer mare Icy Gaze, Resenda came from a rearward position and defeated Two Bees $6 for trainer Georgina Henderson and jockey Adrian Patterson.

Dubai Sunrise $9 was a farther two and a quarter lengths away, filling the minor placing, for Barry Dunn and apprentice Jackson Matthews.

Apprentice Melanie Tyndall brought up her first metropolitan win when her master Gary Searle's charge Grand Taj, the $1.60 public elect, was the long neck winner of the fifth event which was contested over 1000 metres.

Sired by the United States bred stallion Elusive Quality and mothered by Coming Up Roses, a Rubiton mare, Grand Taj led all the way and beat the $17 chance Vinard for mentor Deon Koch and jockey Troy Baker.

Starting at $5 Royal Tern was a farther short half head away third for Phillip Stokes and Paul Gatt.

Being under the care of David Hayes and having the services of rider Dean Holland the $5 chance Edge Of Time recorded a head win in race six which was run over 1950 metres.

Giving his sire Barely a Moment a double, the four year old from the Rory's Jester matron Heaven's Edge, Edge Of Time was prominent throughout and beat the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas prepared Clare Lindop guided Penn Station $4. Lannaki $5.50 was another two lengths away third for Tony McEvoy and Jackson Matthews.

Trainer John Croucher prepared his second winner in two days when the Undoubtedly sired Aurumcert, from the Geiger Counter mare Auri, was the neck winner of the 1300 metre final event.

Having the services of Simon Price and being well placed Aurumcert, the $2.80 favourite beat the Barry Brook trained Amy Herrmann ridden Tureen $9.

Starting for the first time under the care of John Hyam and having the services of Troy Baker the former New Zealand prepared galloper Double Cream $7 was a short-neck away third.
