RACE 1 – OP CONSULTANTS HURDLE – 3036 metres

Stewards questioned Trainer Mr. C. McGlinchey and Jockey G. Preston in relation to that rider being declared for GEMQUEE and NASTIVE EDITION. Stewards accepted the reasons given by Mr. McGlinchey and G. Preston and N. Dunn was the replacement rider for GEMQUEE.

LOVE OF BRANDY (P. Fahy) jumped the second hurdle badly.

LOOBNAN (G. Young) jumped the hurdle in the vicinity of the 200 metres, on the first occasion, badly.

CURRENCY ROAD (P. Thomas) jumped the final hurdle badly.

LOOBNAN (G. Young) was retired from the event in the vicinity of the 400 metres.

G. Young was questioned by the Stewards in relation to the performance of LOOBNAN and into the reason why he retired the gelding from the event. G. Young explained to the Stewards that LOOBNAN had travelled well until the 800 metres, where the horse began to tire very quickly and he became unhappy with its action. Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of LOOBNAN revealed that the gelding had returned distressed through oxygen debt. Mr. L. J. Smith, Trainer of LOOBNAN, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required to be lodged prior to the gelding accepting for a Flat race. Mr. Smith was further advised that LOOBNAN must also trial satisfactorily in an Official Hurdle School.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary inspection of CURRENCY ROAD revealed the gelding had suffered lacerations to both hind legs.

Following the poor performances of LOVE OF BRANDY and NASTIVE EDITION, Mr. S. Dodd Trainer of LOVE OF BRANDY, and Mr. R. Campbell Trainer of NASTIVE EDITION were both advised their horses must complete a satisfactory Hurdle School before accepting for any future Hurdle Races. Subsequent to the race Veterinary examinations of LOVE OF BRANDY and NASTIVE EDITION revealed no visible abnormalities.

RACE 2 – TOLKA STUD / SABIS THREE-YEARS-OLD COLTS & GELDINGS MAIDEN PLATE – 1000 metres

IT’S A GREY (T. Creek) and SPINNING EAGLE (NZ) (J. Maund) jumped away awkwardly.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres SPINNING EAGLE (NZ) (J. Maund) shifted in and hampered ROCK’S FOLLY (C. Lindop), which in turn shifted in, resulting in IT’S A GREY (T. Creek) having to be steadied for a few strides.

Subsequent to the race the Club’s Medical Officers examined Jockey J. Maund and ruled him unfit to ride for the remainder of the day.

RACE 3 – YALUMBA DASH / SABIS THREE-YEARS-OLD FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1000 metres

Shortly after the start LIFELONG DREAM (S. Price) and SHE’S UNCANNY (J. Bowditch) bumped.

In the vicinity of the 800 metres WANNA PLAY CHICKEN (N. Tomizawa) shifted out and bumped SHE’S UNCANNY (J. Bowditch), which in turn shifted out and bumped LIFELONG DREAM (S. Price).

In the vicinity of the 400 metres WANNA PLAY CHICKEN (N. Tomizawa) shifted in momentarily and as a result SHE’S UNCANNY (J. Bowditch) had to be steadied for a few strides.

RACE 4 – RAMSGATE HOTEL MAIDEN PLATE – 1266 metres

CALM NIGHT (P. Gatt) and NIKALAPKO (C. Lever) were slow to begin.

DIDNEDA (W. Kerford) was hampered at the start when DEVASTAR (J. Bowditch) jumped out; at the same time as DARK SUPERB (N. Tomizawa) jumped in.

In the vicinity of the 400 metres MIDNIGHT MAN (J. Lyon) shifted out and bumped NIKALAPKO (C. Lever), which shifted out and bumped SOCCER (B. Claridge). J. Lyon was advised by Stewards to make greater effort to keep his mount straight in similar circumstances in future.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres DAR SUPERB (N. Tomizawa) shifted out and hampered REKORB (J. Potter).

Over the concluding stages CAINE (Darren Holland) shifted out and hampered DARK SUPERB (N. Tomizawa).

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of MIDNIGHT MAN revealed the gelding was suffering heat in an off fore knee.

RACE 5 – CUB CLASS 3 HANDICIAP – 1000 metres

CART LURE (W. Kerford) showed a tendency to lay out over the concluding stages.

RACE 6 – BALAKLAVA ON 28 AUGUST CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1416 metres

In the vicinity of the 200 metres KAZOO (NZ) (J. Holder) shifted out and as a result LEMOXIE (C. Lindop) had to be momentarily steadied.

Over the concluding stages SAN SONATA (NZ) (A. Stead) shifted in and hampered KAZOO (NZ) (J. Holder). A. Stead was reminded of his obligations when riding his mounts out to the line.

RACE 7 – BALFOURS DISTANCE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1822 metres

MOONFLEET MAGIC was late scratching by Stewards, acting on Veterinary advice at 1.05 p.m. when it was discovered the mare had heat in an off fore tendon.

CECIL RED (J. O’Connor) jumped out at the start; at the same time as RANGATAUNGA (J. Lyon), which had jumped awkwardly, shifted in onto PROUD GAZE (B. Vale), which in turn shifted in onto STARLIT (P. Gatt). As a result, SKYCOUP (G. O’Loughlin), which was between CECIL RED and STARLIT, was badly checked and as a result lost some ground.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres M. Neilson (CUDDLING) accidentally dropped his whip after it had contacted the whip of ESPRIT DE JEUNE (C. Buchiw).

SUPERIOR MAN (J. Bowditch) was held up for a clear run over the concluding stages.

RACE 8 – ALAN SCOTT 50 YEARS IN BUSINESS MAIDEN PLATE – 1466 metres

COMO PRINCE (J. Holder) and SAJEUNE (T. Creek) bumped at the start. Shortly after SAJEUNE shifted out and bumped VICTORY SHOUTS (J. Potter).

In the vicinity of the 400 metres GHAAZI (NZ) (C. Lever) was continually held up for a clear run behind MAHOGANY DANCER (S. Price) and eventually had to be checked from the heels of that filly in the vicinity of the 350 metres.

In the vicinity of the 400 metres SOUND TYCOON (P. Gatt) accidentally contacted the heels of LIVE THE DREAM (J. Lyon) and as a result faltered momentarily.

In the vicinity of the 200 metres GHAAZI (NZ) (C. Lever) was again held up for a clear run behind IRISH BLESSING (C. Lindop).

MERITS (W. Kerford) raced wide throughout.

Subsequent to the race a Veterinary examination of VICTORY SHOUTS revealed the mare was lame in the off fore leg. Mr. J. Searle, Trainer of VICTORY SHOUTS, was advised that a Veterinary Certificate of Fitness to Race would be required to be lodged prior to the mare accepting for any future event.
