Thereafter at about the 900 metre mark MADELYN’S CHIMES blundered, resulting in Jockey Balding becoming unbalanced. MADELYN’S CHIMES (L Balding) thereafter made the home turn awkwardly and raced wide into the straight. Stewards questioned Jockey L Balding (MADELYN’S CHIMES) regarding this filly’s performance today. She stated that the filly raced very green in the early part and was not comfortable racing amongst the rest of the field and blundered at about the 900 metre mark. She also stated that the horse raced awkwardly rounding the home turn. It was her view that perhaps the filly lacked grass gallops due to the recent trials being cancelled. Stewards noted her explanation.

Approaching the 600 metre mark RUNALOT (C Burt) rolled in marginally. At the same time ROCK ‘N’ SEA (C Kingston) rolled out slightly. As a result RUNALOT had to be checked off the heels of ROCK ‘N’ SEA and switched to the inside of this filly.

RACE 3 - WAKEFUL CLUB MAIDEN PLATE – 3-Y-O & UPWARDS - SET WEIGHTS – 1310 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

A public announcement was made prior to the start of the race that permission had been granted for DAYBREAK DAWN to race without pacifiers. Stewards granted this permission as Trainer John Luttrell did not have a combination set of blinkers/pacifiers available for today’s event and a set could not be obtained prior to the start of this event. At a subsequent inquiry, Trainer Luttrell explained that it was his view that the horse would be racing in pacifiers only and would be permitted to race in blinkers when pacifiers are ordered off at on a HEAVY track rating. It was this belief that lead him to lodge a Stable Return declaring pacifiers and blinkers on this gelding. Stewards explained to Mr Luttrell that when a horse is declared to race in blinkers and pacifiers, the horse is to race so equipped unless pacifiers are ordered off based on considerations of safety when the track conditions are rated HEAVY. Mr Luttrell was also advised that although Stewards took no action against him on this occasion, he is to ensure to check all his gear for horses in his stable as the indulgence granted today may not be extended in the future and action may be taken against him.

CLASSY ANNE (S McFerran) was slow away.

Shortly after straightening, BANDMAN (R Bradley A) commenced to lay in and shifted in away from the whip. Apprentice Bradley immediately stopped riding and straightened her mount. As a result of the inward movement, BALMY (T McAllister) was crowded for galloping room between this gelding and MOCULTA (K Moore) and had to be checked by its rider.

Thereafter BANDMAN (R Bradley A) laid in again at about the 150 metre mark, resulting in Apprentice Bradley having to stop riding and straighten her mount again. After inquiring into the first incident, Stewards were satisfied that Apprentice Bradley had made every effort to straighten her mount as soon as it commenced to lay in and took no further action.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race DAYBREAK DAWN (Trainer John Luttrell).

RACE 4 - T.R.O.A CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1920 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

No reports.

RACE 5 - "THE MERCURY" CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1550 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

MAN IN BLACK (L Balding A) jumped awkwardly and outwards at the start, contacting with CRUDONI (D Pires A) and carried this horse out onto SHINING OCHRE (T McAllister) who became crowded for galloping room between that mare and MISS KAAMELLE (C Burt). As a result SHINING OCHRE (T McAllister) lost some ground and MISS KAAMELLE (C Burt) was carried a little wider on the track. At the 800 metres, ALTYNAI (S Snell) brushed with CRUDONI (D Pires A) when electing for a run between that mare and MY LOVER (C Kingston).

SHINING OCHRE (T McAllister) was held up for a clear run for a number of strides rounding the home turn.

RACE 6 - PRESENTATION HANDICAP – 1205 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

STIR CRAZY (C Burt) laid in in the back straight and had to be steadied off the heels of QUIT SMOKIN’ (L Goodrick) at about the 700 metre mark.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Stewards considered whether to declare TIGER TALK (K Moore) a non-starter acting on a report from Jockey K Moore, the rider, who stated that he felt the barrier blanket may have impeded this horse at the start. Stewards viewed the video patrol films in the presence of Jockey Moore, the Starter and two barrier attendants. All the parties present were questioned and after due consideration, Stewards decided that there was not sufficient evidence upon which they could reasonably conclude that the barrier blanket had impeded TIGER TALK and consequently TIGER TALK was not declared a non-starter. It was established that TIGER TALK did jump slow at the start, losing approximately one length and thereafter appeared slow to muster early speed. Stewards also noted Jockey Moore’s report in relation to his instructions. He stated that as a result of being slow away, he was unable to ride to instructions which were to race the horse from a forward position.

Jockey D Sparks, the rider of TUZLA, pleaded guilty to and was found guilty of a charge of careless riding AR-137(a), the terms of the charge being that whilst riding TUZLA rounding the home turn just prior to straightening, he allowed his mount to shift inwards when electing for a run to the inside of SANDY LAKE (S Quilty) who was giving ground, which resulted in TIGER TALK (K Moore) who was following on the inside of TUZLA, having to be severely checked by its rider and switched out to avoid the heels of TUZLA (D Sparks). In coming to a penalty, Stewards took into account that Jockey Sparks has a relatively clean record. Notwithstanding this fact, Jockey Sparks was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence midnight 04/08/2002 and to expire midnight 18/08/2002. This period reflects the equivalent of two race meetings in Tasmania. Jockey Sparks has the right of appeal.
