RACE 1 – LAMINEX INDUSTRIES MAIDEN PLATE – 1200 METRES 14 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed for 3 minutes TWIN PEARLS (T Atkin) proved difficult to load in to the barriers. Trainer P Geeves was advised that a warning had been placed on this mare’s barrier manners.

BROWNEYED BOY (J Borrett), SERIQUI (C Kington) and DANAREEF (M Allen (a)) were all a fraction slow to begin.

Rider S Snell advised his mount CLANCY’S CROSSING hung out throughout.

Approaching the crossing at the 800 metre mark BLADE STAR (S Gates) blundered and then proceeded to jump the crossing shortly thereafter loosing ground as a consequence.

Approaching the 750 metre mark DARAREEF (M Allen (A) shifted out contacting SERIQUI (C Kingston) causing this horse to slip in behind.

PLUM BOY (D Pires) was inclined to lay in when under pressure in the home straight resulting in its rider having to stop and straighten his mount.

In the run to the finish DANAREEF M Allen (a) shifted ground outwards abruptly and in doing so contacted TRENT CHRISTOPHER (T Wong (a)) racing on its outside, who in turn shifted outwards and contacted with INNER SPRING (S McFerran). M Allen (a) was shown the video and advised that when her mount shifts ground in future she is to stop riding and straighten.

ORDER OF MERIT (D Keating (a) raced greenly over the concluding stages.

A post race veterinary examination was taken of SERIQUI (C Kingston) due to this horse racing erratically throughout. This examination failed to show any obvious abnormalities.

Trainer M Trinder was charged $27.50 for use of the Club’s colours on ALL POINTS WEST.

RACE 2 – KWMC MAIDEN / CLASS 1 PLATE – 2100 METRES 14 RUNNERS

HIGHSTRUNG (L Goodrick) and BLUE LANI (S Maskiell) were both a little fractious at the start.

FATHER PATRICK (S Snell) and PRINCE SALEM were both a fraction slow to begin.

Jockey C Kingston advised PETULANT was slow into stride.

Jockey David Pires was reprimanded under AR 137 (a) for careless riding in that passing the winning post on the first occasion he allowed his mount to shift inwards tightening BOLD DIP (J Borrett) in onto QUESTINO (K Bandy) who then had to be checked by its rider. In not issuing a more severe penalty Stewards took into account that rider Pries attempted to take corrective measures immediately.

In the run to the finish HIGHSTRUNG (L Goodrick) shifted inwards under pressure making slight contact with FATHER PATRICK (S Snell).

A swab sample was taken from BOLD DIP (Trainer L Dixon) winner of the race.

RACE 3 – BEER STREET MAIDEN PLATE (1) – 1400 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed for 3 minutes owing to LOVE HER (E Chan (a)) becoming cast in the barriers and having to undergo a Veterinary examination. This mare was withdrawn on Veterinary advice at 2.52pm. Stewards ordered all bets placed on this horse being fully refunded and no other reductions on any other bets. Trainer Larry Dalco was advised that this filly would be stood down from racing until a satisfactory official barrier trial was performed. Trainer Dalco was further advised that in future when engaging a rider for this filly to refrain from engaging apprentice riders without significant experience.

ALI BE QUICK (C Kingston) and OH SO SOFT (NZ) (K Bandy) were both a fraction slow to begin.

At approximately 1100 metre mark OH SO SOFT (NZ) (K Bandy) became crowded for room between CAMILLERI (S Gates) and ME OLD MUKKA (D Keating (a)) OH SO SOFT ((NZ)) (K Bandy) threw its head in the air when being restrained and lost some ground in consequence.

Rounding the turn at the 1200 metre mark COALFIELDS (S Snell) had to be restrained off the heels of WESTELLE (J Borrett), which shifted ground inwards. Jockey Borrett was shown the video and advised to take far more care when shifting ground in future.

RACE 4 – SYDESTON MAIDEN PLATE (2) – 1400 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

When the start was effected BESS OF HARDWICK jumped outwards contacting ANGEL’S EDGE who had to be checked by its rider, simultaneously CHU FENG (J Nevin (a)) jumped outwards contacting with BELLEEK (B McCoull).

NICANOVA (S Maskiell) was inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages.

At approximately the 650 metre mark ANGEL’S EDGE (M Hart (a)) which was over racing and had to be restrained off the heels of BESS OF HARDWICK (S McFerran) and in doing so shifted outwards and contacted with JACK WILL DANCE (NZ) (L Goodrick) forcing that runner a little wider on the track.

Rider T Atkin (IMPLOSION) pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under AR 137 (a) when approaching the home turn he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards and in doing so tightened NICANOVA (S Maskiell) in onto LEX LOCI (R Bradley), as a result LEX LOCI (R Bradley) contacted the rail and was checked by its rider, BESS OF HARDWICK (S McFerran) which was following was also inconvenienced. Rider Atkin and was suspended from riding in races for a period equivalent to 1 racemeeing in Tasmania, effective midnight Sunday 19th October 2003 and to expire midnight Saturday, 25th October 2003. In arriving in penalty Stewards took into consideration rider Atkins’s exemplary riding record over a long period of time. Acting under the powers of LR 5 (q) Stewards deferred this suspension to allow rider Atkin to fulfill his obligations at Elwick on Sunday 19th October 2003. Mr Atkin was advised of his right of appeal.

RACE 5 – ROY COGHLAN MEMORIAL THREE-YEARS-OLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP 1200 METRES – 7 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed for 2 minutes when TAN QUEST (S Hamer (a)) proved difficult to load into the barriers. Trainer Campbell was advised a warning had been placed on this horses barrier manners.

ASA GREY (C Kingston) and TAN QUEST (S Hamer (a)) were a fraction slow to begin.

TAN QUEST (S Hamer (a)) pulled hard in the middle stages.

Over the concluding stages KRAKOW (J Borrett) shifted out under pressure and in doing so bumped with HAIL THE GANG (S Snell) who in turn shifted outwards slightly inconveniencing ASA GREY (C Kingston).

Correct weight was delayed when connections of the 2nd placegetter KRAKOW (J Borrett) wished to view the official photo finish. After viewing the photo finish, connections were satisfied with the decision and correct weight was given.

Stewards questioned Trainer Mrs Mary Ryan and rider B McCoull about the apparent disappointing performance of HERITAGE PORT both parties stated that in their opinion the gelding may not have handled the jump in class along with racing on a better track surface as two factors, as well as being unable to obtain cover so therefore racing in a more forward position in comparison to its last start. Rider B McCoull reported that in his opinion the gelding showed immaturity and greenness. When questioned about her intentions with the gelding Trainer Ryan stated she intended to start the horse on one more occasion to further benefit its education before turning him out for a spell. A post race Veterinary examination of HERITAGE PORT failed to show any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 6 – LILS FILLES AND MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

7 RUNNERS

WICKED INTENTIONS (C Kingston) was slow to begin.

OH SO GRAND (D Pires) jumped awkwardly resulting in rider Pires becoming unbalanced for a short distance thereafter.

MADE DOWN UNDER (S Hamer (a)) pulled hard in the early and middle stages, with the saddle on this mare shifting forward placing apprentice Hamer at a slight disadvantage.

MADE DOWN UNDER (S Hamer (a)) brushed with the running rail at approximately the 950 metre mark.

MAPATAZ (K Bandy) blundered at approximately the 500 metre mark.

A swab sample was taken from KARIBA SKY (Trainer J Blacker) winner of the race.

Trainer John Blacker was charged $27.50 for use of the Club’s colours on LANGKAWI.

RACE 7 – HALLAMS WATERFRONT RESTAURANT C,G, & E CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES 10 RUNNERS

ISLAND QUEST (L Goodrick) and BADGER’S RETREAT D Pires) both slow to begin.

HUTTON (T Atkin) was inclined to overrace in the early and middle stages.

ISLAND QUEST (L Goodrick) was held up for a clear run shortly after entering the home straight.

An objection was lodged by 2nd placegetter S Maskiell (NUVOLARI) and 4th placegetter L Goodrick (ISLAND QUEST) against the winner of the race OLD EUGOWRA (R Hanby (a)). Alleging interference at the 100 and 200 metre marks respectively. After hearing the relative evidence and viewing the official patrol films both protests were upheld and the new placings amended to read 1st NUVOLARI (S Maskiell), 2nd MOUVOIR (S Snell), 3rd ISLAND QUEST and 4th OLD EUGOWRA (R Hanby (a)) and 5th BAFFERT (K Bandy).

Upon inquiry it was established that at approximately the 200 metre mark OLD EUGOWRA (R Hanby (a)) when struck with the whip, shifted ground abruptly inward and hampered ISLAND QUEST (L Goodrick) which was racing to the inside, and at approximately the 100 metre mark when again under the whip shifted ground inwards abruptly causing ISLAND QUEST (L Goodrick) to be checked and NUVOLARI (S Maskiell) which was racing further to the inside to be bumped solidly, being forced inwards and becoming unbalanced for some distance. It was noted that Miss Hanby (a) stopped and attempted to straighten her mount on all occasions and no further action was taken.

GENERAL

Rider Corey Kingston pleaded guilty to a charge under AR 120 (b) in that he could not make the allotted weight in races 1 and 3 on SERIQUI and ALI BE QUICK respectively. Stewards fined Corey Kingston $100. However, due to the unavailability of suitable riders permission was granted for rider Kingston to ride these mounts 1 kg overweight. A public announcement was made to this effect.

Trainer G White advised Stewards that Trainer L Dalco will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for his Apprentice E Chan at today’s race meeting.

Trainer R Carr advised Stewards that Trainer K Dixon will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for his runners at today’s race meeting.

Trainer G McCulloch was reprimanded under rule AR 160 (b) for using his mobile phone when present in the mounting yard.
