RACE 1 – SOUTHERN CROSS TELEVISION MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

LEANAMAREE (Reece Wheeler (a)) and SMART SIGNAL (Kellie Cook) were both a fraction slow to begin.

MISTY WEATHER (Ken Moore) was slow to muster early speed.

Rounding the home turn COVINGTON (Stan Tsaikos) had to check off the heels of the tiring D’OR FILLE (Brendon McCoull) and in doing so inconvenienced TAL QORMI (Leah Goodrick) for a number of strides.

After this event stewards reprimanded Mrs Dianne Parish, the rider of STILL SMOKIN (A.R.144), for failing to weigh in for fifth place.

A post-race veterinary inspection of D’OR FILLE revealed that this mare had bled from both nostrils. Trainer Ms Samantha Barr was advised of the provisions of AR-53A (4) and D’OR FILLE may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two (2) months and the mare may not start in any race for a period of three (3) months effective 8 January 2003, whereafter D’OR FILLE is to satisfactorily trial over at least 1000 metres in the presence of a steward.

RACE 2 –SOUTHCORP WINES SUPERVOBIS THREE-YEAR-OLD CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

Prior to the running of this event ZARINA BOY (David Pires (a)) underwent a veterinary inspection behind the barriers, after it had been kicked, and was subsequently passed fit to take its place in the field.

As the start was effected KARIBA SKY (Leah Goodrick) jumped inwards, bumping with SPINIFEX FAIRY (Craig Newitt (a)).

At approximately the 700 metres JUST SISSY (Dianne Parish), when being restrained off the heels of BEGGAR (Brendon McCoull), shifted ground inwards abruptly and in doing so bumped heavily with EILY’S LASS (Ken Lewis). As a result both JUST SISSY and EILY’S LASS became unbalanced for a number of strides.

Apprentice Mr Craig Newitt (SPINIFEX FAIRY) reported that his mount struck the running rail on at least two occasions in the running and slipped slightly behind at approximately the 600 metre mark.

Leaving the 600 metres PAINTED RHIARI (Simon Snell), when racing greenly, shifted outwards slightly and in doing so caused JUST SISSY (Dianne Parish) to be eased across the heels of BEGGAR (Brendon McCoull).

Approaching the home turn KARIBA SKY (Leah Goodrick) had to be momentarily steadied when attempting a tight run to the inside of EILY’S LASS (Ken Lewis).

Over the concluding stages it was noted apprentice Mr David Pires dropped his off side rein on two occasions, resulting in this rider having to stop and straighten his mount.

JAY KAY BEE (Kelvin Sanderson) raced greenly over the concluding stages.

A post race veterinary inspection of BEGGAR revealed an injury to the off side knee. Trainer Allan Stubbs was informed a veterinary certificate must be supplied prior to this gelding’s next race start.

A post race veterinary inspection of JUST SISSY revealed the filly had been galloped on. Trainer Michael Doherty was informed a veterinary certificate must be supplied prior to this filly’s next race start.

RACE 3 – CARLTON DRAUGHT CLASS 2 HANDICAP - 1175 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

Shortly after the start SIR RODGER (Stephen Maskiell) shifted ground outwards, crowding OUR KING’S IMAGE (Reece Wheeler (a)) out on to the heels of GANTRY (Brendon McCoull).

At approximately the 500 metre mark TACAMO (Craig Newitt (a)), when improving, shifted out and contacted BACHI (Corey Kingston) carrying this mare a little wider on the track.

Approaching the home turn OUR KING’S IMAGE (Reece Wheeler (a)) was held up briefly behind the tiring PETER GUN (Sandra McFerran).

At approximately the 200 metre mark HUTTON (Will Stacey (a)) shifted ground inwards away from OUR KING’S IMAGE (Reece Wheeler (a)) and tightened DEAR SANTA (Kelvin Sanderson) for several strides. At the same time TACAMO (Craig Newitt (a)), which was laying in, bumped several times with SIR RODGER (Stephen Maskiell), resulting in that gelding easing off the heels of GANTRY (Brendon McCoull).

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, MIGHTY MICKEY (Trainer Mr Michael Trinder).

RACE 4 – JACKSON MOTOR COMPNAY CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1380 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

DRAGON SPIRIT (Kelvin Sanderson) was a fraction slow to begin.

Shortly after the start FLAMIN’ EMMA (Leah Goodrick) blundered and as a result lost several lengths.

Apprentice Mr Craig Newitt (JACARANDA PARK) reported his mount slipped when making the turn at approximately the 1100 metre mark.

Approaching the 800 metre mark TAL MISS (Brendon McCoull), when over-racing, shifted outwards and bumped with BEACHLEY (Stan Tsaikos), carrying this mare a little wider on the track.

At approximately the 650 metre mark FLAMIN’ EMMA (Leah Goodrick) had to be steadied off the heels of GREY INTRIGUE (Ken Moore).

Rounding the home turn GREY INTRIGUE (Ken Moore) switched outwards over the heels of SPIT THE PIP (Kevin Dodge) to improve and in doing so carried FLASH CROWN (Dianne Parish), BEACHLEY (Stan Tsaikos) and DON SERENE (Stephen Maskiell) all wider on the track. Stewards advised Mr Moore he must take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

DRAGON SPIRIT (Kelvin Sanderson) laid in under pressure in the home straight.

A post race veterinary examination of TAL MISS revealed the filly blew excessively and had a poor recovery rate. In the opinion of the veterinary surgeon, the filly may well have choked down.

RACE 5 – TOLL TASMANIA CLASS 1 HANDICAP –1600 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

The start was delayed for one minute when WHAT GOES (Stan Tsaikos) cast a hind plate. After consultation with the farrier, the other hind plate was removed and approval was granted for the gelding to race without hind plates. A public announcement was made to this effect.

As the start was effected MOUVOIR (Simon Snell) jumped inwards as LIBBIANNE (Reece Wheeler (a)) jumped outwards, causing FATHER PATRICK (Brendon McCoull) to be checked.

At approximately the 600 metre mark LIBBIANNE (Reece Wheeler (a)) shifted ground inwards and as a result FATHER PATRICK (Brendon McCoull) had to be steadied by its rider for a number of strides.

On entering the home straight both CHOKITO (Craig Newitt (a)) and TANGLESPOOK (Kelvin Sanderson) were forced a little wider on the track when THE ADGIE (Stephen Maskiell), racing to their inside, shifted outwards over the heels of MOUVOIR (Simon Snell) to obtain a clear run.

Mr Stephen Maskiell, the rider of THE ADGIE, reported his mount was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

After this event it was noted that WEST WINGS (James Nevin (a)) had lost an off side hind plate during the running of the event.

Mr Ken Lewis, the rider of MINNIE MOUSQUITO, was found guilty of a charge, under A.R.137(a), of careless riding in that, shortly after the start, he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards, when insufficiently clear of WEST WINGS (James Nevin (a)), causing this gelding to shift in on to TANGLESPOOK (Kelvin Sanderson). As a result TANGLESPOOK was severely checked by its rider and THE ADGIE (Stephen Maskiell), which was racing to the inside of TANGLESPOOK, was inconvenienced for some distance. Mr Lewis’ licence to ride in races was suspended for a period covered by four race dates in mainland Tasmania, effective midnight, 8 January 2003 and concluding midnight, 27 January 2003.

Ms Leah Goodrick, the rider of RED RONALD, was reprimanded, under A.R.137(a) for careless riding, in that over the concluding stages she allowed her mount to shift ground inwards when insufficiently clear of the tiring MINNIE MOUSQUITTO (Ken Lewis), causing that filly to be checked by its rider. In not taking any further action, stewards took into account that MINNIE MOUSQUITTO was tiring quickly.

THE ADGIE, which broke free from its attendant in the mounting yard on return to scale, was inspected by the veterinary surgeon, which revealed a small skin abrasion to the near hind stifle area with no associated lameness.

RACE 6 – THE PREMIERS CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

Stewards delayed the announcement of correct weight as Mr Stephen Maskiell, the rider of the third placegetter, MAN IN BLACK, wished to view the film in view of a protest. After viewing the film, Mr Maskiell elected not to protest and correct weight was given.

Shortly after the start TETON DAKOTA (Reece Wheeler (a)) became tightened for racing room between BEAU EROS (Dean Larsson), which had shifted in, and SURGE OF POWER (Dianne Parish), which had shifted outwards.

SAFIN (Leah Goodrick) was inclined to over-race in the early and middle stages.

Rounding the turn at the 1100 metre mark MAN IN BLACK (Stephen Maskiell), when being restrained, was inclined to throw its head around.

Mr Brendon McCoull, the rider of BELLARINE LAD, reported his mount slipped rounding the home turn.

At the crossing at approximately the 220 metre mark ENCOSTA NOVA (Corey Kingston) shifted out across the heels of SILK ‘N’ ROSES (James Nevin (a)) and in doing so made contact with SURGE OF POWER (Dianne Parish) who in turn made contact with I’LL GET BY (Stan Tsaikos). MAN IN BLACK (Stephen Maskiell), which was attempting a run outside I’LL GET BY had to be checked in across the heels of that gelding as a result. Mr Kingston was reprimanded, under A.R.137(a) for being the major contributor to this incident.

MONAGELA (Kevin Ring) tired noticeably over the concluding stages.

Mr Brendon McCoull, the rider of BELLARINE LAD, was reprimanded, under A.R.137(a) for careless riding, in that shortly after the start he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards, causing MONAGELA (Kevin Ring) to be checked by its rider.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, ENCOSTA NOVA (Trainer Paul Jones).

RACE 7 – THE OASIS DEVONPORT CUP – 1800 METRES - 14 RUNNERS

As the start was effected MISLAID (David Pires (a)) jumped outwards and contacted LORD BARACUS (Kelvin Sanderson).

Rounding the home turn ABBADENA (Simon Snell) crossed outwards over the heels of MURPHY’S MAGIC (Matt Pump (a)) and in doing so bumped with MISLAID (David Pires (a)). As a result CHARDERE (Ken Moore) and ALMOST SPRING (Brendon McCoull) were slightly hampered. MARETTE (Kevin Dodge), which was racing to the outside of these runners, was carried wider on the track.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, DREAM QUEST (Trainer Barry Campbell) and the second placegetter, MURPHY’S MAGIC (Trainer John Blacker).

RACE 8 – McKILLOP INSURANCE BROKERS HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

SWAPAN (Craig Newitt (a)) and GOLD LANE (Dianne Parish) were both slow to muster early speed.

Upon straightening WARPED (Kelvin Sanderson), when attempting a run to the outside of VAIN EDITION (Kevin Dodge), had to be eased by its rider when VAIN EDITION shifted ground outwards under pressure.

WARPED (Kelvin Sanderson) was inclined to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

After the running of this event stewards questioned Mr Simon Snell, the rider of FLEWELLA, about his apparent lack of whip use over the concluding stages. Mr Snell explained that his instructions were to ride the mare patiently with the intention of making a late run and he was also instructed that if he were to use the whip, he should only do so sparingly. Mr Snell further explained that he had ridden the mare under strong hands and heels riding from approximately the 400 metre mark. Stewards noted Mr Snell’s explanation.

A swab sample was taken from the second placegetter of the race, FOUND EAST (Trainer Terry Roles).

RACE 9 – THE ADVOCATE CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1800 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

As the field was released, MR O’GRADY (NZ) (Simon Snell) slipped behind and lost a little ground as a consequence.

BADGER’S RETREAT (Kevin Dodge) and COUNTESS SOPHIE (Sandra McFerran) pulled hard in the early and middle stages.

FAIR NIME (Craig Newitt (a)) was held up behind the tiring MR O’GRADY (NZ) (Simon Snell) from the 400 metres to approximately the 200 metre mark.

Approaching the 200 metre mark HAVANA BAY (Dean Larsson) shifted ground inwards abruptly when placed under pressure and as a result FAIR NIME (Craig Newitt (a)), which was racing to its inside, was hampered for a number of strides.
