RACE 1 - RACEHORSE OF THE YEAR IN AUGUST 2Y MDN PLT (SW Div 1) – 1100 METRES

VILLA MARIA (B McCoull) was slow to muster early speed.

Stewards issued a reprimand to Apprentice S Hamer (ZUBENELGENUBI) under AR 137 (a) careless riding in that at approximately the 900 metres he allowed his mount to shift in resulting in COUNTESS JEAN (L Goodrick) being tightened and as a result PARLANTI (C Kingston) who was racing to the inside having to relinquish his position.  In not taking more severe action Stewards took into account the fact that the racing manners of COUNTESS JEAN had some bearing on the interference suffered.

NEVER EMPTY (R Hanby) which hung in severely throughout the event shifted in abruptly at the 900 metres, resulting in LAC LA RONGE (S Maskiell) being checked and forced inwards.  As a result SOUTH REEF (S Snell), which was racing on the rail, was checked and lost its position.  Stewards advised Trainer W Curran that NEVER EMPTY was to be stood down to an official trial.  A post race Veterinary examination of NEVER EMPTY (Trainer W Curran) revealed this filly to be lame in the off fore leg.  A Veterinary certificate must be produced prior to this filly’s next official trial or race start.
