RACE 1 – CHARLES O’CONOR CLASS 1 HANDICAP

1550 METRES – 7 RUNNERS

SPIT THE PIP (K Lewis) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the event.

Shortly after leaving the 1500 metre mark, IONACOLUMBA (B McCoull) had to be momentarily eased when FEENISH (C Burt) crossed towards the inside running rail. Shortly thereafter IONACOLUMBA became crowded for galloping room when both LILAC SKY (C Kingston) and EAST WEST (S Snell) shifted inwards slightly and at the same time DAYBREAK DAWN (P Michaelides) shifted out marginally which resulted in CHAPELLERIE (D Pires A) making contact with the hindquarters of IONACOLUMBA which unbalanced this filly. As a result, Jockey McCoull (IONACOLUMBA) was forced to check his mount. In the circumstances, Stewards could attribute no blame to any one particular rider, however, Jockey Burt, the rider of FEENISH and Jockey Snell, the rider of EAST WEST, were shown the video of the incident and advised to take far greater car when shifting ground in future.

Trainer W H Burt reported to Stewards after the race that FEENISH had pulled up sore. A subsequent veterinary inspection revealed FEENISH to be lame in its near foreleg. Trainer W H Burt will be advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness must be tendered prior to its next race start.

RACE 3 - CASCADE DRAUGHT MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2

3-Y-O & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS – 1205 METRES

11 RUNNERS

EASY AS (C Burt) proved difficult to load into the barriers. Trainer Edward Alderton was advised that Stewards will continue to monitor this filly’s behaviour.

At approximately the 700 metre mark MATSONATION (P Michaelides) and EASY AS (C Burt) contacted and shortly thereafter EASY AS shifted in and contacted with ESTATE KING (C Kingston).

Shortly after leaving the 600 metre mark MATSONATION (P Michaelides) when being restrained off the heels of EASY AS (C Burt), shifted out abruptly and ran off the track. Thereafter this horse shifted back in abruptly towards the inside running rail. When questioned about this horse’s behaviour, Jockey Michaelides stated that the horse was dead in the mouth and raced very greenly and as a result he was unable to steer it around the turn near the 600 metre turn after being eased off the heels of runners in front. Stewards noted his comments.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SHEEDS (Trainer Brian Lomasney) revealed the skin to be broken on the gelding’s off hind bumper.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race TARNI ROSE (Trainer Steve Griffiths).

RACE 4 - K R PEARCE SUPERVOBIS 2-Y-O HANDICAP – 1080 METRES

8 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Jockey S Quilty, the rider of the fourth placegetter (QUIRK) wished to view the official video patrol film. After viewing the film, Jockey Quilty advised that he wished to lodge a protest against MANCHA (C Kingston) being declared the second placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference at about the 250 metre mark. After considering evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films and acting on their own observations, the protest was dismissed. Stewards ordered the Judge’s placings to stand and correct weight was declared. It was established that approaching the 250 metre mark, MANCHA (C Kingston) when struck with the whip, shifted in abruptly and inconvenienced QUIRK (S Quilty) who had to be momentarily steadied by its rider. Jockey Kingston, the rider of MANCHA immediately put both hands on his reins when that gelding shifted in and straightened his mount. As a result of the corrective action taken by Jockey Kingston, his mount shifted outwards and inconvenienced AXIOM (K Dodge) to its outside who had to be eased by its rider.

MANCHA (C Kingston) was slow at the start, losing two to three lengths.

Stewards inquired into a report that Mr Lomasney, the Trainer of AXIOM, had in his possession prior to the start of this event, a device that resembled a syringe. It was established that the device was in fact an "oral doser", incapable of having a needle fitted to it. Mr Lomasney explained that he had been using this device to rinse his horses’ mouths prior to racing for in excess of twenty years. Stewards also viewed a second device presented by Mr Lomasney at the inquiry also referred to as an "oral doser". In the circumstances Stewards adjourned the inquiry to take further evidence to established whether there had been a contravention of AR 178A.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race QUEEN OF EGYPT (Trainer T Young).

RACE 5 - H W GREGG CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1205 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

LAKE SOLVEIG (C Kingston) was fractious in the barriers.

MAN UNDERCOVER (S Snell) was fractious in the barriers, jumped awkwardly and lost three to four lengths on the field.

A post-race veterinary inspection of VIDEO FLYER revealed the gelding to have bleeding from its mouth after biting its tongue.

A post-race veterinary inspection of LAKE SOLVEIG failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 6 - ALAN TRETHEWEY TROPHY – NO CLAIMS – WFA

1310 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

FEMME BUISSON (K Dodge) and ST ANDREWS (J Borrett) were slow away at the start.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race MATRIX HUNTER (Trainer Max Wood).

RACE 7 - CASCADE PREMIUM CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 2120 METRES

10 RUNNERS

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected SILENT AUCTION prior to the start of the race as the mare had rubbed hair off both hips in transit to the races, and passed the mare fit to take its place with the field.

Approaching the winning post for the first time, RIVIERA PRINCE (J Robertson A) raced up onto the hindquarters of US ONLY (S Snell) and clipped the heels of this filly, blundered, fell and dislodged Apprentice Robertson. As a result, BANDMAN (S Maskiell), REGAL SWORD (K Dodge) and KATHY’S PRIDE (B McCoull) who were following were inconvenienced. SILENT AUCTION (S Quilty) was unable to avoid the fallen horse and fell as a result of contact with this horse, dislodging Jockey Quilty. Both riders were conveyed off the track by the on-course medical staff and the race continued. Both Apprentice Robertson and Jockey Quilty were transported to hospital for observation.

A post-race veterinary inspection of SILENT AUCTION (Trainer Mr John Blacker) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of RIVIERA PRINCE (Trainer Mr Gary White) revealed minor grazes to its hind legs with no other abnormalities.

RACE 8 - W L CLOAK CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1080 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed when MY KERRIE MAREE broke through the front of its barrier gates and bolted the entire course and thereafter crashed through the outside running rail at approximately the 1400 metre mark. MY KERRIE MAREE was subsequently withdrawn by Stewards acting on veterinary advice at 4.52 pm. Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on MY KERRIE MAREE (8/1) prior to 4.52 pm to be refunded in full. All bets made prior to 4.52 pm to be paid less ten cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and ten cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket. Trainer Mr David Brunton was advised that MY KERRIE MAREE must perform satisfactorily at an official barrier trial during which it is to behave in a tractable manner in the barrier gates before its next race start.

DEVON RELAY (C Kingston) was slow away at the start.

Shortly after the start, RANCHERIE (S Snell) shifted in and carried TURBULENT FORCE (K Dodge) inwards which resulted in BANTAM WEIGHT (S Maskiell) becoming crowded for galloping room between TURBULENT FORCE and BARKER (K Lewis) to its inside. As a result, BANTAM WEIGHT and BARKER made contact for a number of strides. Jockey Snell straightened his mount and shortly thereafter continued to race towards the inside running rail. In the process TURBULENT FORCE was checked by its rider. After inquiring into this incident, Stewards established that in relation to the second incident, Jockey Snell was sufficiently clear of runners and it appeared that he steadied when crossing and slowed the pace slightly. Stewards took into account that TURBULENT FORCE is a big striding horse and galloped a little awkwardly just prior to being restrained by its rider. Notwithstanding this fact, Stewards reminded Jockey Snell of his obligations when shifting ground and advised him to take far greater care when shifting ground in the future. TURBULENT FORCE was again slightly inconvenienced to the inside of NORMAN FLYER (C Burt) at about the 600 metre mark when this horse made the turn awkwardly.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MY KERRIE MAREE revealed minor cuts to the left side of its neck.
