RACE 1 – THE ADVOCATE – SUPERVOBIS THREE-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE –990 METRES - 9 RUNNERS

PRINCE RAFTER (K Moore) and KENTUCKY BOURBON (S Quilty) contacted on jumping.

VERDANT (L Goodrick) became crowded for galloping room shortly after the start between LYMINGTON (S McFerran) and HASTY QUEEN (J Borrett).

Following the running of this event stewards established that the barrier gate to the outside of SKI STAR (Mark Goring) was left vacant and all horses drawn to the outside of this filly had been loaded in their correct order from gate 7 onwards. Stewards questioned the starter, Mr P Hall, as to the reasons why this particular gate was left vacant. He explained that as a result of SKI STAR becoming fractious in the gates, the gate to the outside of this filly was left vacant. Stewards advised Mr Hall that notwithstanding the fact that the Rules of Racing provide a wide discretion to the starter to ensure a safe and fair start for all horses, it is not policy to leave barrier stalls vacant, based on the reason forwarded. Mr Hall was advised to discuss the matter with his barrier staff to prevent a recurrence in future. Stewards were unable to determine that any prejudice had been suffered by horses drawn to the outside of SKI STAR.

Jockey M Goring, the rider of SKI STAR, reported at scale that when this filly became fractious his skullcap had made contact with the barrier structure prior to the start being effected. Following the running of this event jockey Goring was examined by the on course medical staff who declared him fit to fulfill his remaining engagements. Stewards inspected jockey Goring’s skullcap to establish whether it had suffered a severe impact in the incident. Upon inspection of the skullcap, and having questioned jockey Goring, it was established that there was no severe impact.

A post-race veterinary inspection of GREY INTRIGUE revealed the gelding had blood in its mouth, which was of nil significance.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, GREY INTRIGUE (Trainer Barry Campbell).

The track was upgraded to slow at 2.00 p.m.

RACE 2 –QUICKMIX CONCRETE MAIDEN PLATE – 1175 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

SUMMER NIGHT (K Moore) was slow away at the start and failed to muster early speed. A post-race veterinary inspection revealed no abnormalities.

RUNAKO (L Balding) raced greenly from approximately the 600 metre mark until the entrance to the home straight.

BELLADONI (C Burt) appeared to resent the whip in the straight and attempted to buck over the concluding stages.

Jockey B McCoull, the rider of MY DRAW, reported at scale that his horse was hanging out throughout the event. Stewards spoke with jockey McCoull in this regard and showed him the video footage over the concluding stages of the event where his mount continued to hang out and shifted ground outwards, which resulted in DALWINA (S Quilty) having to be momentarily steadied between this mare and SWIFTS CREEK (David Keating (a)). Jockey McCoull was advised that, in the opinion of stewards, he could have made a far greater effort to straighten his mount by stopping riding and putting both hands on the reins to straighten. A post-race veterinary inspection of MY DRAW revealed blood on both near bumpers, which was of nil significance.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, SWIFTS CREEK (Trainer Terry Roles).

RACE 3 – 7AD CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 8 RUNNERS

LICAM LICAL (S Quilty) was slow away at the start, losing 1-2 lengths.

GLEN IRIS LAD (M Goring) contacted with LOCK ME AWAY (S McFerran) on jumping.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race, PASIELLES (Trainer Vern Poke).

RACE 4 – ATKINSON & GIBSON MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

After being loaded into the barriers FYNDARN FLYER (K Dodge) became fractious when BIEGA (Simon Snell), to its outside, became fractious. As a result BARLEY MOW INN (David Keating (a)), drawn to the inside of FYNDARN FLYER, also became fractious. The veterinary surgeon inspected all three horses prior to the gates being released and declared them fit to take their place with field. An announcement to this effect was made prior to the running of the event. A post race veterinary examination of all three horses revealed:-

  1. BARLEY MOW INN – sustained injury to near hind and on return to scale found to be lame. A veterinary certificate of soundness will be required prior to the gelding’s next race start.
  2. FYNDARN FLYER – no abnormality detected.
  3. BEIGA – sustained injury in pre-race barrier incident but no abnormality detected.

BIEGA (S Snell) jumped in at the start and contacted with FYNDARN FLYER (K Dodge), who in turn contacted TOLDO (NZ) (L Goodrick).

Leaving the 600 metres, FYNDARN FLYER (K Dodge) commenced to give ground and dropped back in the field, which resulted in BARLEY MOW INN (D Keating (a)), following to its inside, becoming crowded for galloping room and having to be checked by its rider and switched to the outside of FYNDARN FLYER. Both POWER OF PETITE (K Moore) and LUCKY DALE (S Quilty), who were following, were inconvenienced as a result.

Approaching the 150 metre mark BIEGA (S Snell) ducked out sharply and as a result jockey Snell had to put both hands back on the reins to straighten his mount.

RACE 5 – SPREYTON VETERINARY CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1800 METRES - 7 RUNNERS

RUSSIAN SPY (NZ) (D Keating (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start and contacted the barrier gate.

HUTTON (P Michaelides) jumped the crossing at the 200 metre mark.

BANDMAN (B McCoull) grazed its shoulder in an incident in the mounting yard. The gelding was examined by the veterinary surgeon and the injury was of nil significance.

RECHARGED (L Goodrick) was examined by the veterinary surgeon post-race and no abnormality was detected.

RACE 6 – RICHMOND CONCEPTS AND PRINT HANDICAP – 1175 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

On return to scale it was found that FOUND EAST (David Keating (a)) had cast its off fore plate in running.

A post-race veterinary inspection of WARPED revealed that the gelding blew significantly and had a poor/slow recovery. There were no further abnormalities detected.

Jockey Phil Michaelides, the rider of BEAU EROS, was found guilty of a charge under A.R.175(a), the terms of the charge being that he acted in a dishonest manner when weighing in after the running of this event in respect of his mount BEAU EROS, placed fourth by the Judge, when he weighed in without one of his stirrup irons and leathers and in doing so failed to declare this fact to the stewards. In coming to this decision, stewards took into account a host of facts and the only reasonable inference stewards could draw from those facts was that jockey Michaelides’ conduct was dishonest in the circumstances. Jockey Michaelides was fined $1500. He has the right of appeal against the decision of stewards.

RACE 7 – TOTE SPORT RADIO CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1380 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when the connections of the fourth placegetter, WEE SQUEEZE (J Borrett), wished to view the photo finish of the race. After doing so the connections were satisfied that the correct placing was awarded to their horse and correct weight was announced.

BICAPOBLUE (D Keating (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start and inconvenienced A LITTLE NEDDY (C Kingston) and WIND FORCE (S Quilty).

Approaching the 600 metres WIND FORCE (S Quilty) was momentarily eased when FAST RIDE (S Snell) shifted in slightly. Jockey Snell, the rider of FAST RIDE, was shown the video of the race and advised to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

FAST RIDE (S Snell) shifted in approaching the crossing at the 200 metres and had to be steadied off the heels of A LITTLE NEDDY (C Kingston) and switched to the outside of this horse.

A post race veterinary examination of A LITTLE NEDDY (C Kingston) revealed that the colt blew excessively and had a very poor recovery. There was no associated lameness and no further abnormality.

RACE 8 – WINNING EDGE PRESENTATIONS CLASS 4 HANDICAP - 1800 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

BLACK LIGHT (R Bradley (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start.

LUMINOUS PRINCE (K Dodge) reared as the gates opened.

Shortly after the start BLACK LIGHT (R Bradley (a)) was restrained by its rider when racing in a tightly bunched field and switched to the outside of SILK ‘N’ ROSES (B McCoull).

COOL LAD (K Sanderson) laid in over the concluding stages.
