EMERGENCY – GAINED A START

Stewards ordered pacifiers off all runners due to track conditions.

RACE 1 – SHAW HEAVY PLANT HIRE MAIDEN PLATE (1) – 1100 METRES 14 RUNNERS

Shortly after straightening KENTUCKY BOURBON (T Wong A) shifted in slightly and SAFE HAVEN (J Borrett) shifted out slightly resulting in these two horses coming together and making slight contact.

ART MAJOR (M Allen A) shifted out under pressure over the concluding stages.

Stewards questioned jockey S Maskiell (GRACEFUL FLYER) in relation to his riding in the home straight. He explained he rode this horse vigourously between the 600 and 400 metres and was trapped wide leading to the home turn. He added that he tested the horse with the whip shortly after entering the home straight but thereafter the mare did not respond to his riding and wanted to lay in. When asked why he did not at least ride his mount hands and heels over the last 150 metres of the event he stated that the mare had compounded in the heavy underfoot conditions and in his opinion had enough. Stewards noted his explanation and advised him that he is to ensure that he rides his mounts at least hands and heels to the line unless there is some factor preventing him from doing so.

Stewards also questioned trainer B P Campbell in relation to the mare’s performance. He stated that today was the first run away from Devonport and that the wide draw, resulting in this mare racing three deep most of the way, may also have had a bearing on her performance.

A post-race veterinary inspection of GRACEFUL FLYER revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from ART MAJOR (Trainer T V Green), winner of the race.

RACE 2 SHAW CIVIL CONTRACTING MAIDEN PLATE (2) – 1100 METRES 13 RUNNERS

BELLEEK (B McCoull) jumped in at the start and contacted GONE FAZZ (C Kingston).

RED ENCHANTER (L Bant) was slow away at the start.

HERITAGE PORT (P Michaelides) raced green for a short distance between the 600 metre mark and the home turn.

MAMBO TWIST (K Sanderson) laid out rounding the home turn and in the home straight.

Rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening EL CABAL (S Maskiell) had to be severely checked by its rider to avoid the heels of CLANCY’S CROSSING (S Snell), who also had to be severely checked when it received a bump from SPARTAN (J Borrett) racing to its outside, who had shifted in abruptly away from BELLEEK (B McCoull) who had shifted in slightly after brushing with HERITAGE PORT (P Michaelides) to its outside. As a result of this incident EL CABAL (S Maskiell) lost some ground.

In the circumstances Stewards were unable to attribute any blame to any one rider and considered the incident to be accidental.

Jockey S Maskiell was found guilty of a charge under ARR 83(a). The terms of the charge being that on return to the mounting yard after the running of this event, in the vicinity of the entrance to the mounting yard, he conducted himself in an inappropriate manner by swearing in conversation. He was fined $50. In coming to this penalty the Stewards took into account elements relating to publicity and the degree of the inappropriate behaviour.

A swab sample was taken from HERITAGE PORT (trainer M L Ryan), winner of the race.

RACE 3 – SHAW CONTRACTING CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 12 RUNNERS

Trainer T M Roles was charged $27.50 for the use of the Club’s colours on TAL MISS.

WHAT’S THE GOSS sustained a kick to the off forearm at the barrier prior to the race. The veterinary surgeon examined this mare and passed her fit to race.

Stewards granted permission for jockey P Michaelides to ride MILITIA 1.5kg above the weight alloted to the gelding as there was no other rider available at or nearer the allotted weight. Jockey Michaelides pleaded to and was found guilty of a contravention of AR 120 (b) and was subsequently fined $100. In addition he was advised that Stewards had not considered his previous record in this particular case and decided the matter on the basis of him having a relatively clean record in this regard. He was also advised in the strongest terms that if he reoffends in a similar manner in the near future stronger action may be taken. He has the right of appeal.

Apprentice M Hart was replaced by apprentice R Hanby as the rider of MONEYMAN, as apprentice Hart was unable to claim any portion of his allowance. Apprentice Hart was reprimanded under AR 92 (12) for failing to claim any portion of his allowance resulting in him having to be replaced.

After being slow into stride TAL MISS (D Pires) had to ease off the heels of MIRAQUEST (K Sanderson) who had jumped out at the start.

RACE 4 – FIELD FAMILY COLTS, GELDINGS AND ENTIRES CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

BEELZA ((NZ)) (K Bandy) jumped awkwardly at the start.

ELSARK (M Allen A) laid out under pressure in the home straight. As a result apprentice Allen had to stop riding momentarily over the concluding stages and straighten her mount.

When questioned about STAR FLIGHT’S performance trainer M Ganderton could offer no explanation.

A post race veterinary examination of STAR FLIGHT (trainer M Ganderton) revealed no obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from BIONIC BOY (trainer P A Quarrell), winner of the race.

RACE 5 –TOLL TRANSPORT FILLES AND MARES CLASS 2 HANDICAP 1400 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

PETULANT (C Kingston) was slow to muster early speed.

MADE DOWN UNDER (S Snell) and PRINCESS OF NIME (M Allen (A) overraced in the early stages of the race.

RACE 6 – SHAW CONTRACTING HANDICAP – 1600 METRES - 10 RUNNERS

No report.

RACE 7 – SHAW LAND DEVELOPERS CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES 12 RUNNERS

RUTHAIN spread a near hind shoe in the mounting yard and had to be returned to the stripping sheds to be reshod.

There was a slight delay to the start of this race when BORN TO HUSTLE (B McCoull) and CALANTE LAD (K Sanderson) proved difficult to be loaded into the barriers.

MING D’OR (L Bant) was slow into stride.

Approaching the home turn HAVANA BAY (S Snell), who had a tendancy to lay in, shifted in and momentarily crowded WESTELLE (J Borrett).

RACE 8 – SHAW ENGINEERING CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES - 13 RUNNERS

WILLIAMTOWN LYRIC was a late scratching by order of Stewards at 1.50pm acting on veterinary advice. It was revealed that the mare had been kicked in the lower jaw this morning at trainer V C Poke’s stables. The veterinary inspection revealed that the jaw was starting to swell and painful to palpate.

Trainer Poke was advised to present a veterinary certificate of soundness prior to the mare’s next start.

The Club’s colours were used on TAJAZ in this event (no charge).

The start of this race was delayed approximately 3 minutes due to CHICAGO GOLD (M Allen A) proving very difficult to be placed in the barrier stalls.

Stewards advised trainer J Petch that a warning has been placed on the gelding’s barrier manners. He was also advised that if CHICAGO GOLD proves intractable in future it may be stood down to a trial.
