RACE 1 – THE TASMANIAN THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS MAIDEN PLATE – 1800 METRES – 8 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed by approximately two minutes when the ambulance was late arriving on course.

PETRARCH (James Nevin (a)) over-raced in the early stages of the event.

SHE’S WICKED (Matthew Hart (a)) was momentarily steadied when it became crowded for galloping room rounding the home turn shortly prior to straightening, when HAVANA BAY (Simon Snell) shifted out slightly to obtain a clear run and at the same time BLUE LANI (Stephen Maskiell) shifted in slightly.

A veterinary examination of THE SCOUSE DEVIL (Brendan McCoull) subsequent to the event revealed no obvious abnormalities.

RACE 2 – THE GRENVILLE STUD PARTNERS CHOICE MAIDEN PLATE (1) – 1175 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed approximately 1-2 minutes due to the delay experienced at Mudgee (Race 1).

ATTO (Phil Michaelides) was slow away at the start.

BOLD DIP (Will Stacey (a)) was slow into stride.

RUTHAIN (James Nevin (a)) laid in under pressure in the straight.

Trainer John Blacker was questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of HEEDFUL (Brendon McCoull). He explained that following its run in Hobart on 31 August 2003, and on its return to stable, he had found nothing untoward with the gelding and HEEDFUL was prepared in its normal manner for today’s event. Trainer Blacker also confirmed that jockey Christie Burt stated following its previous start that she felt something amiss with the gelding in the early stages. It was further his opinion that HEEDFUL would be better suited over more ground. Trainer Blacker was advised that the gelding’s future performances would be monitored.

A veterinary examination of SANNARELLE (Simon Snell) subsequent to the event revealed blood in the mouth, which was of nil significance.

A swab sample was taken from the fourth placegetter in the event, HEEDFUL (trainer John Blacker)

RACE 3 – THE GRENVILLE STUD - WEST QUEST MAIDEN PLATE ( 2) – 1175 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

The start of this race was delayed approximately 2 minutes due to the delay experienced at Mudgee (Race 2).

Trainer Barry Campbell was charged the sum of $10 for use of the Club colours on HIGHSTRUNG (Stephen Maskiell)

Stewards granted permission for HIGHSTRUNG (Stephen Maskiell) to race without a nose roll. A public announcement was made to this effect prior to the running of the event.

BELFRY BOUNTY (Rebecca Hanby (a)) jumped out at the start and contacted with PETULANT (Corey Kingston).

QUICK AS A BLINK (James Nevin (a)) laid in throughout in the straight. A veterinary examination of the gelding subsequent to the event revealed blood in the mouth, which was of nil significance.

CALIOCHA (Will Stacey (a)) raced greenly in the straight.

RACE 4 – THE STEEL HEART BY CHAMPION ZABEEL CLASS 1 HANDICAP– 1175 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

TAL MISS (Simon Snell), PLATINUM SONG (David Pires) and HUTTON (Will Stacey (a)) came together at the start.

Shortly after straightening A LITTLE NEDDY (Brendon McCoull) became crowded for galloping room when OLD EUGOWRA (Rebecca Hanby (a)) shifted in slightly and HUTTON (Will Stacey (a)) shifted out slightly.

Apprentice Will Stacey (HUTTON) was spoken to regarding his use of the whip over the concluding stages of the event. He was advised to ensure that in future he refrains from using the whip when his horse is shifting ground and to make an effort to straighten his mount in the first instance.

Trainer Mark Ganderton was questioned regarding the apparent improved performance of STAR FLIGHT (Troy Atkin). He had no explanation other than, in his opinion, the horse may have been better suited to racing at its home track. His explanation was noted and he was advised that this gelding’s future performances would be monitored.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race STAR FLIGHT (Trainer Mark Ganderton)

RACE 5 – THE ARMIDALE STUD - TELESTO FILLIES AND MARES CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1175 METRES – 5 RUNNERS

A veterinary inspection of SCENTIAN BELLE (James Nevin (a)) subsequent to the event revealed the mare blew significantly and recovery time was slower than expected. There was no further obvious abnormality.

RACE 6 – THE TASMANIAN SIRES AT STUD HANDICAP – 1175 METRES – 9 RUNNERS

FROSTY’S TOY (Will Stacey (a)) was slow into stride.

Apprentice Terry Wong, the rider of CHAMAR, accidentally dropped his whip at approximately the 400 metre mark.

FOUND EAST (Rebecca Hanby (a)) was momentarily steadied rounding the home turn.

RACE 7 – THE BELLA VISTA PARK - NEWTOWN JET CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1380 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when apprentice Ruth Bradley (RILEY REDWING) wished to view the official Judge’s photo for second and third placings. After viewing the official photo correct weight was announced at 3.48 pm.

ROUGE CABELLO (Will Stacey (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start.

LIGHT SQUALL (Jodie Borrett) was held up for a clear run from approximately the 400 metre to 100 metre mark.

At the crossing, at approximately the 200 metre mark, MR FRISKY STAR (Rebecca Hanby (a)) shifted in abruptly and momentarily inconvenienced RILEY REDWING (Ruth Bradley (a)).

A veterinary inspection of CICERO (Terry Wong (a)) subsequent to the event revealed the gelding had CAST its off side front shoe. Recovery was good and there was no obvious abnormality detected.

The veterinary surgeon reported that A THOUSAND REASONS (James Nevin (a)) was auscultated post race and found to have normal heart rhythm.

RACE 8 –THE SOMMERVILLE STUD BLUE GUM CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 7 RUNNERS

There was a slight delay to the start of this event when SUPER CLASSIC (Leah Goodrick) backed out of its barrier stall after being loaded.

OUTTRIM (Rebecca Handby (a)) and MATICHELLO (Brendon McCoull) were both slow into stride.

OUTTRIM (Rebecca Hanby (a)) over-raced in the early stages of the event.

At about the 1000 metre mark SUPER CLASSIC (Leah Goodrick) blundered, shifted out slightly and brushed with LUNAR TIARA (James Nevin (a)).

The veterinary surgeon reported that MATICHELLO returned to the mounting yard showing signs of Stringhalt. This gelding was walked for 15-20 minutes and improved without any treatment. Acting on a recommendation by the veterinary surgeon, stewards ordered that MATICHELLO trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start. Trainer Mr Ryan will be advised accordingly.

RACE 9 – THE PARK CREST STUD SOVIET LAD CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 12 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when jockey Brendan McCoull (BORN TO HUSTLE) wished to view the official Judge’s photo for first and second placings. After viewing the official photo correct weight was announced at 5.01pm.

CANWAL (Will Stacey (a)) jumped awkwardly at the start.

Approaching the 600 metre mark BEELZA (NZ)) (Troy Atkin) shifted in and in doing so carried DEVON’S BOY (Michelle Allen (a)) in onto CALANTE LAD (David Pires), who in turn shifted in, resulting in CRUDONI (Jodi Borrett) becoming crowded between this horse and HER HONOUR (Kane Bandy), who had shifted out slightly. In this incident CRUDONI was forced to check and lost its running position and CANWAL (Will Stacey (a)), who was racing to the inside of HER HONOUR had to be checked by its rider. In all the circumstances stewards issued jockey Atkin with a severe reprimand (Careless Riding – A.R.137(a)) and advised him to take far greater care when shifting ground in future.

A post-race veterinary examination of CRUDONI revealed that this mare had bled from both nostrils. Trainer C Jordan was advised of the provisions of AR‑53A (4). CRUDONI may not be trained, exercised or galloped on any racecourse for a period of two (2) months and it may not start in any race for a period of three (3) months effective 7/9/2003 and then only after a satisfactory gallop of at least 1000 metres in the presence of a Steward.

Jockey Troy Atkin (BEELZA (NZ)) was reprimanded for failing to weigh in for fifth place immediately after the event.
