As there was only one barrier blanket available at the start, TERRI OR ROSE (J Borrett -Trainer Dianne Ray-Luttrell) who normally loads with a barrier blanket, was unable to be loaded in her normal fashion as the barrier blanket had already been fitted to another horse in the event.

RACE 3 - CANADIAN CLUB MAIDEN / CLASS 1 PLATE - DIVISION 1

SET WEIGHTS - 1550 METRES - 11 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey S Snell, the rider of ALLEY CHAT, weighed in at more than half a kilo less than the weight he weighed out at. After calling for the bridle and after weighing with the bridle for this horse, Jockey Snell weighed in at correct weight and correct weight was declared at 12.47 pm. At a subsequent inquiry, Stewards established that there was no evidence of malpractice or negligence on the part of Jockey Snell and in the circumstances took no further action.

LIBERAL LOVER (E Chan A) was slow into stride and lost some ground on the rest of the field.

Shortly after leaving the 600 metre mark, ALLEY CHAT (S Snell) who had a tendency to lay in, rolled in slightly after electing for a tight run to the inside of ZARA’S CHOICE (T Atkin) who had also rolled in slightly. As a result of this movement, HAPPY FLIRT (C Kingston) who was racing to the inside of ALLEY CHAT, became crowded for galloping room between this gelding and the inside running rail and had to be checked by its rider for a number of strides. As a consequence HAPPY FLIRT lost some ground. After inquiring into the incident, Stewards could hold no one rider responsible for the interference suffered by HAPPY FLIRT and took no direct action other than to remind Jockey Snell of his obligations and to take far greater care when electing for runs in the future.

A post-race veterinary inspection of DESIGN ACADEMY (B McCoull) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

As a result FANTA’S REVENGE had to be steadied and shifted to the outside of this horse’s heels and crowded NEVERTRICE (L Goodrick) out onto CREIGHTON (NZ) (K Cook).

A post-race veterinary inspection of CREIGHTON (NZ) (Trainer Neil Richardson) revealed the gelding had sustained a small cut on the inside aspect of the left hock.

RACE 8 - CASCADE PREMIUM CLASS 1 HANDICAP - 1080 METRES

11 RUNNERS

Acting on an assurance given by Trainer C Crook that GOLD SEQUEL does not race equipped with pacifiers, Stewards gave permission for this horse to race without pacifiers. The start of this race was delayed approximately four minutes as a result of the late scratching of RILEY REDWING (R Bradley - Trainer Royston Carr) at 4.14 pm by order of Stewards acting on veterinary advice. It was established that after the gelding was placed in its barrier stall it became fractious. Thereafter it moved forward and dropped its head, making contact with the barrier gates. This gelding was removed from its barrier gate, inspected by the Club’s veterinary surgeon who reported that he had several facial lacerations. Following the scratching of this gelding, it broke free from the Clerk of the Course and galloped towards the winning post where it was re-captured and lead off the inside track.

Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on RILEY REDWING (5/2) prior to 4.14 pm to be refunded in full. All bets made prior to 4.14 pm to be paid less thirty cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and twenty cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket. Trainer Royston Carr was advised that a warning had been placed on RILEY REDWING in relation to its barrier manners. Trainer Royston Carr was advised that a veterinary certificate must be tendered before the gelding’s next race start.

MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (C Kingston) was slow away, losing approximately four lengths at the start.

Rounding the home turn, shortly prior to straightening LADONIS (D Parish) shifted in and in doing so crowded FOLDING NOTES (K Bandy) to its inside which resulted in Jockey Bandy having to check his mount. As a consequence this gelding lost some ground. In the circumstances, Stewards reprimanded Jockey Parish under AR-137(a) (careless riding) and advised her that in future, she is to ensure that she is sufficiently clear of riders before shifting ground and that a re-occurrence of similar interference may result in Stewards taking stronger action.

Jockey K Bandy presented Stewards with a medical certificate declaring him fit to ride at today’s race meeting.

Trainer Mr Leon Wells advised Stewards that Trainer Mr Dean Wells will be acting on behalf of and taking responsibility for his runner, PHYLLIS MAY, at today’s race meeting.
