RACE 1 – BRIGHTON COUNCIL CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1600 METRES

Shortly after the start, KELLEN (M Ball (a)) shifted ground inwards when insufficiently clear of SPRINGFIELD MAN (S Snell) resulting in that gelding having to be steadied by its rider and shift out over the heels of KELLEN.  As a result, SPRINGFIELD MAN got its head up and over-raced for a short distance. In all the circumstances Apprentice M Ball was reprimanded under AR-137(a) careless riding and advised that a repetition of this type of riding may result in stronger action being taken in future.

At approximately the 800 metres, SCOTTISH SYMBOL (S Gates) had to be momentarily steadied off the heels of CHAZARD (T Atkin).

KELLEN (M Ball (a)) had a tendency to lay in under pressure over the concluding stages.

RACE 2 – FOWLES AUCTION GROUP SUPERVOBIS MAIDEN PLATE (2YO MAIDEN - SET WEIGHTS) – 1100 METRES

The Club’s veterinary surgeon inspected GOLDEN SURPRISE (Trainer Allan Stubbs) prior to the start after the filly injured itself in the float en route to the racecourse.  GOLDEN SURPRISE was subsequently passed fit to take its place with the field.

The start of this race was delayed when GOLDEN SURPRISE (S Brazil) and KING’S SCHOLAR (B McCoull) both proved a little difficult to load into their barrier stalls.

As the start was affected, KING’S SCHOLAR (B McCoull) reared and lost ground in consequence.

JADEEBURKE (S Hamer (a)) jumped in at the start.

Racing towards the 700 metres, QUEST FOR JOY (M Ball (a)) rolled in marginally resulting in ARIA QUEST (S Snell) laying in and away on to LOUGHMOE CASTLE (S McFerran) who in turn shifted in and laid on to VILLA MARIA (S Maskiell) for some distance.  Shortly thereafter LOUGHMOE CASTLE laid out despite the efforts of its rider resulting in VILLA MARIA having to steady in over LOUGHMOE CASTLE’s heels and as a result GOLDEN SURPRISE (S Brazil) which was racing on the rails, being checked by its rider.  As this incident was deemed to be caused by horses racing greenly, no direct action was taken against any one rider on this occasion.

A post-race swab sample was taken from the winner of the race KING’S SCHOLAR (Trainer Bill Ryan).

RACE 3 –  GREEN GLORY HOLSTEIN STUD MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 1(3YO&UP – SET WEIGHTS) – 1200 METRES

At the start, RUMKER (C Kingston) jumped in on to LITTLE SAD (D Oakford) resulting in that gelding being a little slow into stride.

ALLYANN (J Geard (a)) jumped outwards at the start and brushed with PRINCE FLYER (T Atkin).

STAR OF PERSIAN (GB) (K Bandy) jumped out at the start and bumped with LAKE DOUGLAS (S Gates).

SPRINGFIELD ROSE (S Snell) had a tendency to over-race in the middle stages of the event.

STAR OF PERSIAN (GB) (K Bandy) had to be eased off the heels of SPRINGFIELD ROSE (S Snell) approaching the 600 metres.

On entering the home straight, SPRINGFIELD ROSE (S Snell) shifted out to improve, resulting in DESERT ROMEO (L Goodrick) which was giving ground at the time, having to be steadied by its rider.

Apprentice J Geard pleaded guilty under AR 137(a) careless riding in that approaching the 200 metres, when being ridden out by its rider she permitted her mount (ALLYANN) to shift ground outwards resulting in PRINCE FLYER (T Atkin) being carried out over the heels of RUMKER (C Kingston) which shifted in marginally resulting in PRINCE FLYER having to be checked by its rider.  Stewards, in the presence of Jockey Geard’s master, Trainer Mr T Roles, suspended Jockey Geard’s licence to ride in races for a period of two race meetings in Tasmania beginning at midnight on Wednesday, 5 January 2005 and expiring at midnight on 16 January 2005.

RACE 4 – GREEN GLORY HOLSTEIN STUD MAIDEN PLATE – DIVISION 2 (3YO&UP – SET WEIGHTS) – 1200 METRES

The start of this race was delayed when MAGIC LAUGHTER (Trainer Gary White) was a late scratching at 2.16 pm after dislodging Jockey Kingston and breaking through the front of its barrier stall and galloping some distance.  After being recaptured, MAGIC LAUGHTER, when being lead back to the barriers, again broke away from the Clerk of the Course and was declared a late scratching by Stewards at 2.16 pm.   Jockey C Kingston was examined by the on-course ambulance officers and declared fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements today.  The start of this race was further delayed when SOME TRUTH (Trainer Jason Clifford) was a late scratching at 2.16 pm acting on veterinary advice after injuring its right hock in the barriers.  Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all bets placed on MAGIC LAUGHTER and SOME TRUTH prior to the scratching time of 2.16 pm to be refunded in full.   A deduction of ten cents for the win and ten cents for the place on the face value of the ticket were ordered to be paid on all win and place tickets.  Trainer G White (MAGIC LAUGHTER) and Trainer Jason Clifford (SOME TRUTH) were advised that both horses must undergo a barrier trial to Stewards’ satisfaction before their nominations for racing will be accepted.

As the start was affected, DANARLI (NZ) (K Bandy) jumped awkwardly.

PRIMA CAVALLO (B McCoull) and NILE PRINCESS (D Pires) bumped on jumping.

COME ON GRUMPY (S Snell) and LAURIKAN BAY (T Atkin) were slow into stride.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MAGIC LAUGHTER (Trainer G White) did not reveal any abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race IRISH GREY (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 5 –  INDEPENDENT ROOFING SERVICE CLASS 4 HANDICAP  – 1100 METRES

At the start, HAIL THE GANG (T Atkin) jumped in and bumped with ENCOSTA NOVA (C Kingston).

At approximately the 900 metres, HAIL THE GANG (T Atkin) lost a towel from its gear under the saddle.  On return to scale, HAIL THE GANG weighed in at 0.4kg under its declared weight.  Acting under the provisions of AR-143 Stewards deemed HAIL THE GANG to have carried the correct weight.

RACE 6 – BRIGHTON HOTEL-MOTEL SUPERVOBIS 3-Y-O CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

As the start was affected, DARK EMBRACE (M Ball (a)) jumped out and made contact with MINN (S Snell) on his outside and then shifted in and made contact with the hindquarters of NO LAUGHING MATTER (L Goodrick) and lost ground in consequence.

KAY TEE (D Oakford) jumped in on to LADETO (S Gates) at the start who in turn shifted in and bumped heavily with BEN BOWYANG (K Bandy).

STEAMBOAT ROCK (C Kingston) was a little slow into stride.

At about the 1100 metres, MINN (S Snell) which was racing erratically, shifted in and bumped with MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull).  Thereafter MINN continued to over-race.

At about the 250 metres, NO LAUGHING MATTER (L Goodrick) shifted out over the heels of WEASEL WAV (S Maskiell) to take a tight run between that filly and MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull) and as a result brushed with MAGGIE BEE on several occasions.

Over the concluding stages LADETO (S Gates) shifted in and brushed with MAGGIE BEE (B McCoull).

RACE 7 – BRIGHTON CUP– 2100 METRES

Pre-race blood samples were taken from the following horses:

                   BOY BLUE                          Trainer Charlie Goggin

                   RAHIRI                                     Trainer Jack Green

YES NO YES                      Trainer David Brunton

OUR DASHING DANE                   Trainer Jason Clifford

                   CORINDHAP                        Trainer Max Wood

As the start was affected, CORINDHAP (K Bandy) was tightened when YES NO YES (B McCoull) jumped out and STAR JEUNE (C Kingston) jumped in.

Leaving the 500 metres, HIT THE SPOT (M Ball (a)) had to shift out to gain a clear run behind the tiring JONES (S Maskiell).

Over the concluding stages, JONES (S Maskiell) was eased out of the event and pulled up by Jockey Maskiell prior to the finishing line.  A post-race veterinary inspection of JONES (Trainer Charlie Goggin) revealed the gelding to have an irregular heart beat (probably atrial fibrillation).  Trainer Goggin was advised that he must tender a veterinary certificate and ECG before JONES’ next race start.

At about the 300 metres, RAHIRI (S Gates) shifted out to improve, resulting in the tiring HEARTLESS (L Goodrick) having to be steadied off that gelding’s heels.  Jockey S Gates was shown the video of the race and reminded that in future he must be fully clear before shifting ground.

A post-race veterinary inspection of HEARTESS (Trainer Christine Crook) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

RACE 8 – DUDLEY CLARK INDUSTRIAL LAND SALES HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

An application by Trainer David Brunton to replace Jockey K Bandy, who was 0.9kg over FLOPPY BUMBLE’s allotted weight, was not granted by Stewards under AR-118.

KING FLYER (S Maskiell) knuckled on jumping.

KING FLYER (S Maskiell) over-raced in the middle stages.

At the 600 metres WESTERN ROMEO (B McCoull) and KING FLYER (S Maskiell) brushed.

At about the 250 metres, when struck with the whip, KING FLYER (S Maskiell), laid in on to FLOPPY BUMBLE (K Bandy).  Jockey Maskiell had to stop riding and straighten the gelding.

Over the concluding stages, BLESS THE LAD (S Snell) was eased out of the event and pulled up by Jockey Snell prior to the finishing line.  A post-race veterinary inspection of BLESS THE LAD (Trainer Rodney Seymour) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.  When questioned on the disappointing performance of BLESS THE LAD, Jockey Snell stated that the gelding knuckled at the 800 metres and again at the 600 metres and when placed under pressure at approximately the 500 metres, BLESS THE LAD seemed to favour his near-side resulting in Jockey Snell easing him out of the race.  Trainer Rodney Seymour was advised that the gelding must now trial to Stewards’ satisfaction before its nomination for racing will be accepted.

RACE 9 – BELLS CONSTRUCTION CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

Stewards found Jockey L Goodrick guilty under AR 137(a) careless riding in that approaching the 1150 metres, she rode her mount (FOR US ALL) inwards when insufficiently clear of KATS CLAUSE (S Snell), resulting in that mare being tightened and having to be checked in over the heels of FOR US ALL.  This resulted in CIVIC ART (K Boxhall (a)) being carried in and making contact with PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER (M Ball (a)) who in turn contacted the hind quarters of ART MAJOR (S Hamer (a)) turning that horse sideways.  Stewards suspended Jockey Goodrick’s licence to ride in races for a period of two race meetings in Tasmania beginning at midnight on Wednesday, 5 January 2005 and expiring at midnight on 16 January 2005.

Approaching the 600 metres ART MAJOR (S Hamer (a)) had to be steadied off the heels of FOR US ALL (L Goodrick).

At approximately the 600 metres, DEAR FRIEND (K Bandy) rolled in marginally resulting in CIVIC ART (K Boxall (a)) having to be steadied off that mare’s heels.

PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER (M Ball (a)) had a tendency to lay in over the concluding stages.
