Emergency Gained a Start

RACE 1 – RAINE & HORNE MAIDEN PLATE 3YO & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS - 1400 METRES

NIGHT FIGHTER (P Michaelides) and IPSISSIMUS (D Keating) bumped at the start.

NIMIRUM (C Kingston) was slow into stride and then over-raced in the early stages.

CHASE (S Maskiell) was slow into stride and was then caught wide rounding the 1200 metre turn before being ridden forward to take up a position near the lead. 

CHASE (S Maskiell) tired over the concluding stages. A post-race veterinary inspection of CHASE revealed the gelding to be lame in its right foreleg.  Trainer Charlie Goggin was advised that a veterinary certificate of soundness is required before CHASE’s next race start.

Jockey B McCoull reported on return to scale that DARK EMBRACE hung out throughout this event.  A post-race veterinary inspection of the gelding failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Jockey L Goodrick (SPINDABELLE) reported on return to scale that the mare did not seem to stretch out in the home straight today.  A post-race veterinary inspection of SPINDABELLE revealed no abnormalities apart from tight muscles over the right shoulder/pectoral region.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race BILL’S REWARD (Trainer Royston Carr).

RACE 2 –  QANTAS & RACT WORLD MAIDEN PLATE 3YO & UPWARDS  - SET WEIGHTS  - 1200 METRES

The start of this race was delayed approximately three minutes when LEX LOCI (B Bamford (a)) dislodged its rider en route to the barriers.  The mare was recaptured after galloping back to the mounting yard.  The Clerk of the Course then lead LEX LOCI back to the barriers where the mare underwent a veterinary inspection before being passed fit to take its place with the field.  Apprentice Bamford was examined by the on-course ambulance officers and passed fit to fulfil his riding engagement in this event.

KANCHANABURI (S Maskiell) was slow into stride.

LEX LOCI (B Bamford (a)) laid in at the 600 metres and brushed with KANCHANABURI (S Maskiell). 

At approximately the 400 metres, GRAND EVENING (J Borrett) was inconvenienced when LEX LOCI (B Bamford (a)), laid in on to JUST REMEMBER (D Pires) who was in turn carried inwards.  Apprentice Bamford was advised that he must make a more concerted effort when his mounts begin to lay in in the future.

At approximately the 250 metres, LEX LOCI (B Bamford (a)) had to be steadied by its rider when MAGIC MAUD (J Geard (a)) shifted ground inwards and STRIKE THROUGH (J Cameron) shifted ground outwards.

BELLE DA MOUR (D Oakford) laid in in the home straight.

Apprentice Bamford reported that LEX LOCI wanted to lay in throughout this event.  A post‑race veterinary inspection of LEX LOCI failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities with the mare.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race RUSSKI (Trainer Chris Crook).

RACE 3 –ROSS FOURACRE 2YO MAIDEN PLATE – SET WEIGHTS – 1200 METRES

The start of this race was delayed when GOONDIWINDI MOON (D Keating) dislodged its rider en route to the barriers.  The gelding was recaptured after galloping back to the mounting yard.  The Clerk of the Course then lead GOONDIWINDI MOON back to the barriers where the gelding again dislodged its rider and galloped back to the mounting yard.   Jockey D Keating was examined by the on-course ambulance officers who declared him fit to fulfil his remaining riding engagements today.  GOONDIWINDI MOON was declared a late scratching at 1.11 pm by order of Stewards.  Prior to the announcement of correct weight, Stewards ordered all monies invested on GOONDIWINDI MOON to be refunded in full.  All bets made prior to 1.11 pm To be paid less four cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and five cents in the dollar on the face value of the place ticket.  Trainer Royston Carr was advised that a warning has been placed on GOONDIWINDI MOON for its manners en route to the barriers.

The announcement of correct weight was delayed as Jockey D Parish (HELENS WALTZ), the rider of the fourth placegetter wished to view the official video patrol film.  After viewing the film, Jockey Parish advised that she wished to lodge a protest against MAMA MIRA (D Oakford) being declared the third placegetter on the grounds of alleged interference from the 600 metres onwards.  After considering evidence from all the parties concerned and viewing the official Stewards’ patrol films and acting on their own observations, the protest was upheld and the Judge’s placings were amended to:

At a subsequent inquiry, Jockey D Oakford pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137 (a) careless riding in that he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards on two occasions, firstly at approximately the 600 metres and again at approximately the 550 metres, when insufficiently clear of HELENS WALTZ (D Parish).  As a result HELENS WALTZ was inconvenienced and had to be checked by its rider.  Jockey Oakford’s licence to ride was suspended for two race meetings in Tasmania to commence at midnight tonight and to expire at midnight on 5 June 2005.

REGAL WEASEL (D Pires) was eased just after the start.

MISTER MATIC (P Michaelides) was tightened for racing room shortly after the start and then got its head up and over-raced.

MISTER MATIC (P Michaelides) and RISK IT (B Bamford (a)) raced greenly in the early stages.

Near the 1000 metres, IRON CLAUS (L Goodrick) shifted ground inwards and inconvenienced FAIRY NICE (M Luttrell (a)).

MISTER MATIC (P Michaelides) hung out rounding the home turn and was then taken wider by RISK IT (B Bamford (a)).

Stewards severely reprimanded Jockey K Bandy (KAMA’S WAY) under AR 137(a) for careless riding in that at approximately the 400 metres, he allowed his mount which was racing green to shift in when insufficiently clear of RISK IT (B Bamford (a)) resulting in RISK IT clipping the heels of KAMA’S WAY.  In not taking more severe action, Stewards took into account the greenness of KAMA’S WAY and also the fact that the filly was having her first start.

HELENS WALTZ (D Parish) raced greenly in the home straight.

Stewards reprimanded Jockey B McCoull under AR137 (a) careless riding as he had allowed his mount to shift ground inwards near the 100 metres when insufficiently clear of HELENS WALTZ (D Parish). 

A post-race veterinary inspection of KAMA’S WAY (Trainer David Brunton) failed to reveal any abnormalities.

A post-race veterinary inspection of MAMA MIRA (Trainer Peter Luttrell) revealed the filly to have blood in its mouth after bitting its lower lip during the race.

RACE 4 – CHEAPER FURNITURE CLASS 1 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

BIONIC BOY (L Goodrick) stood flat-footed at the start and lost several lengths.

OUR BOY GEORGE (B Bamford (a)), STORMIN’ FEVER (K Bandy) and STARSQUI (D Oakford) were slow to muster early speed.

Near the 400 metres, PERFECT VISTA (D Parish) was momentarily held up behind the tiring STARSQUI (D Oakford).

At approximately the 200 metres, MANTLE TALK (D Pires) was momentarily hampered when LADATAC (B McCoull) shifted ground outwards.

Jockey D Oakford (STARSQUI) reported on return to scale that his saddle slipped forward near the 1000 metres, placing him at a disadvantage for the remainder of the race.

A post-race veterinary inspection of BIONIC BOY (Trainer Patricia Quarrel) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race MUI’S PRIDE (Trainer Gary White).

RACE 5 – THORPE TRANSPORT 3YO CLASS 4 HANDICAP – 1200 METRES

WEASEL WAV (D Pires) jumped in at the start and bumped with GOLD MINT (D Oakford).  GOLD MINT then threw its head in the air.

MR. WORBEY (D Parish) was slow into stride and tailed the field throughout.  A post-race veterinary inspection of MR WORBEY failed to reveal any abnormalities.

MAXLIN STAR (M Ball (a)) over-raced and hung out from the 800 metres until entering the home straight.

NO LAUGHING MATTER (L Goodrick) was held up momentarily rounding the 600 metre turn.

WEASEL WAV (D Pires) laid out throughout. 

MAXLIN STAR (M Ball (a)) shifted wider than necessary rounding the home turn.

A post race veterinary inspection of WEASEL WAV revealed the filly to be lame in the left foreleg.  Trainer John Luttrell was advised that he must tender a veterinary certificate of soundness before WEASEL WAV’s next race start.

RACE 6 –  WREST POINT HANDICAP – 1600 METRES

BOY BLUE (D Pires) laid in rounding the 600 metre turn.

Jockey B McCoull (BAY RITZ) reported at scale that he was adjusting the barrier blanket when the start was released but was in no way impeded or disadvantaged.

RACE 7 –  SOUTHCORP WINES CLASS 6 HANDICAP – 1400 METRES

BAILEE’S BABE (S Hamer (a)) was tightened at the start and lost some ground in consequence.

ALVA (M Ball (a)) hung out throughout the event and rounding the home turn, carried MASTER SONAR (B McCoull) and PARIS RHYME (J Borrett) wider on the track.

ALVA (M Ball (a)) resented the whip in the home straight.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the race ME OLD MUKKA (Trainer Terry Roles).

RACE 8 –HOTEL GRAND CHANCELLOR CLASS 2 HANDICAP – 1100 METRES

BEAUCLOU (B Bamford (a)) jumped out at the start and bumped with CHIEMSEE (D Pires).

Jockey D Pires (CHIEMSEE) was reprimanded under AR 137(a) careless riding in that approaching the 600 metres he allowed his mount to shift inwards as a result inconveniencing MY TALLULAH (M Ball (a)) which clipped CHIEMSEE’s heels.  In not taking more severe action Stewards took into consideration that CHIEMSEE had laid in away from DJUAN (C Kingston) during the incident.

GENERAL

Jockey D Oakford pleaded guilty under AR-87-B for not wearing a body protector at the Brighton Training Centre on Thursday, 19 May 2005.  Jockey Oakford was fined $250.

Race 2 – Qantas & RACT Travel World Maiden Plate

Trainer Charlie Goggin reported Monday 23 May that MOLLYO pulled up lame in the near fore and will undergo xrays during the week.  A veterinary certificate will be required prior to the filly’s next start.

Devonport Racing Club – 18 May 2005 – Race 7 Maritime Union Of Australia Handicap 1175 metres

Stewards reprimanded Jockey D Oakford (LITTLE PORKIES) under AR 135(b) for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures in that after missing the start, he rode forward aggressively and challenged for the lead for 700 metres before dropping out on the home turn to finish a distant last.  In arriving at penalty, Stewards took into account that Jockey Oakford had followed the instructions of Trainer Mr G White but had shown a lack of initiative after his horse had missed the start.
