RACE 1 – BUSY BEE MAIDEN PLATE (3YO & UPWARDS – SET WEIGHTS - 1200 METRES

Trainer Charles Pirotta was fined $50 under AR140A for presenting SCENIC ROK in the mounting yard without blinkers.  SCENIC ROK (D Oakford) was permitted to race without blinkers on this occasion as the gelding had not been wearing blinkers in its work since transferring to Mr Pirotta’s stables.  A public announcement to this effect was made prior to the start of the race.

The start of this race was delayed two minutes due to a delay with Race 1 on the Sunshine Coast.

IPSISSIMUS (J Nevin) was slow into stride and then raced greenly throughout.

EASY CHARLIE (J Cameron) over-raced near the 900 metres and had to be steadied off the heels of MOLLYO (M Ball (a)).

Stewards questioned Jockey J Cameron after the apparent disappointing performance of EASY CHARLIE in today’s race.  Jockey Cameron stated that the gelding had worked well during the week but she was of the belief that it had not backed up from its run last week.  She further stated that when placed under pressure at the 600 metres, EASY CHARLIE failed to respond and lost ground.  A post race veterinary inspection of EASY CHARLIE (Trainer Tommy Young) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

The Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that a post race inspection of HERMEKA (Trainer David Brunton) revealed the mare had bitten her tongue, which accounted for the blood in its mouth on its return to the mounting yard.

Following a request from Trainer Peter Daly, the Club’s veterinary surgeon performed a post race inspection of STARSQUI and found the gelding to have a slow recovery heart rate/respiratory rate.  It was also revealed that the horse had its tongue over the bit during the race.

A swab sample was taken from the winner SCENIC ROK (Trainer Charles Pirotta).

RACE 2 – HOBART COACHES 2YO MAIDEN PLATE (SET WEIGHTS) - 1100 METRES

Stewards accepted Trainer Jason Clifford’s explanation for the late declaration of Apprentice M Ball as the rider of MURTOBIA.  A public announcement was made to this effect.

The start of this race was delayed due to TED’S MEMORY (D Oakford) proving very difficult to load into its barrier stall and OUR NEFERTITI (S Maskiell) arriving late at the barriers after having the saddle recalled and re-weighed as Jockey S Maskiell had weighed out without his stirrup irons.  Jockey Maskiell was subsequently fined $100 under AR 175(k) negligence for weighing out without his irons.

MURTOBIA (M Ball (a)) was slow into stride and raced greenly thereafter.

RUM CORPS (J Nevin) reared at the start and was also slow into stride.

PARLANTI (C Kingston) over-raced in the early and middle stages of the race.

ALLMIGHTYPRINCESS (B McCoull) blundered at approximately the 700 metres.

MIDNIGHTATTHEOASIS (D Pires) hung in in the home straight.

At approximately the 200 metres, SISTER PHIL (J Cameron) shifted ground outwards, carrying ANOTHER COLLECTOR (J Geard (a)) outwards.  As a result, OUR NEFERTITI (S Maskiell), which was improving its position, had to be checked out over the heels of that runner.

Stewards reprimanded Jockey S Brazil (QUI LASSIE) under AR 137(a) careless riding, in that at approximately the 150 metres, she rode her horse on an outwards path, which resulted in Jockey C Kingston (PARLANTI) having to steady his mount and shift wider on the track.

Stewards advised Trainer Jason Clifford that MURTOBIA due to its poor performance, has been stood down until such time as the filly can satisfactorily pass a Stewards’ test.  A post-race veterinary inspection of MURTOBIA (Trainer Jason Clifford) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.

Stewards advised Trainer John Luttrell that TED’S MEMORY which proved very difficult to load into the barriers, will be stood down from racing until the gelding can pass a barrier test to Stewards’ satisfaction.

RACE 3 –  DOOR STOPPER CLASS 1 HANDICAP  -  1400 METRES

As the pace eased at approximately the 1000 metres, CHRONOMETER (S Hamer (a)) had to be steadied off the heels of LADATAC (S Maskiell).  As a result WESTERN CHEER (C Kingston) who was following, also had to be checked.

Stewards reprimanded Jockey C Kingston (WESTERN CHEER) under AR 137(a) careless riding, in that at approximately the 250 metres, he allowed his mount to shift ground inwards, carrying CHRONOMETER (S Hamer (a)) in which resulted in CHRONOMETER being placed awkwardly onto the heels of PRINCE FLYER (K Boxall (a)).

A post-race veterinary inspection of RED FOR DANGER (Trainer Charlie Goggin) failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.  At the Trainer’s request, the gelding was endoscoped, which also failed to reveal any abnormalities.

CARAZOOM (K Boxall (a)) laid out under pressure over the concluding stages.

Stewards questioned Jockey S Maskiell in regard to today’s performance of AZURE MELODY.  He was of the opinion that the mare was in need of the run and that from the 500 metres, the mare had improved her position.  However, when he tested the mare at the 200 metres, she began to compound.  Jockey Maskiell also stated that the mare may have been tender on the near side of her mouth which could have been a contributing factor.  A post-race veterinary inspection of AZURE MELODY failed to reveal any obvious abnormalities.  Stewards noted Jockey Maskiell’s comments.

A post-race veterinary inspection of PERFECT VISTA (Trainer Neil Richardson) revealed the bandage had slipped covering an old granulating wound on the inside aspect of her fetlock.  The wound was not bleeding and was not sore.  No further action was required.
