RACE 1 – ROUTLEY’S MAIDEN PLATE – 1200 METRES – 11 RUNNERS

Stewards noted that the owners of BEGGAR were Andrea Oborne and Dr G F Trezise and not Woodlands Stud Syndicate as shown in the racebook.

EMPEROR NAPOLEON (D Keating (a)) jumped a little awkwardly with its head up in the air.

Approaching the 1100m mark TERZILLA (S Maskiell) who was racing green at the time ducked in sharply and inconvenienced ALI’S MOON (L Goodrick) and LANGKAWI (K Dodge) to its inside. As a result of this incident MATICHELLO (S Snell) racing to the inside of LANGKAWI was momentarily inconvenienced. Thereafter approaching the 800m mark TERZILLA continued to race greenly, shifted in and momentarily inconvenienced EMPEROR NAPOLEON (D Keating (a).

GHOST INCOME (K Sanderson) raced greenly leading up to the home turn.

COVINGTON (S Tsaikos) was held up for a clear run for a number of strides rounding the home turn behind BEGGAR (B McCoull) and TIME EFFECT (K Lewis) and thereafter had to switch out for a clear run at approximately the 200m mark.

Jockey S Tsaikos the rider of the fifth placegetter COVINGTON was reprimanded by Stewards for failing to weigh in after the running of the event (AR 144).

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event BEGGAR (Trainer Allan Stubbs).

RACE 2 – TOLL TASMANIA MAIDEN PLATE – 1600 METRES – 16 RUNNERS

The announcement of correct weight was delayed when Jockey S Snell the rider of the 2nd placed runner FLY GEORGIE, after viewing the film of the race, lodged a protest against the 1st placed horse TANGLESPOOK (K Moore) on the grounds that FLY GEORGIE suffered interference rounding the home turn. The protest was dismissed and Stewards confirmed the Judge’s placings. It was established that approaching the 500m mark PRINCE SALEM (B McCoull) had rolled out marginally and carried FLY GEORGIE outwards onto TANGLESPOOK resulting in FLY GEORGIE making contact with TANGLESPOOK for a number of strides and both these horses becoming unbalanced. Shortly thereafter rounding the home turn TANGLESPOOK rolled in slightly at the same time PRINCE SALEM rolled out, and as a result FLY GEORGIE became crowded for galloping room and was momentarily inconvenienced.

TANGLESPOOK (K Moore) blundered at the start.

MIDNIGHT ESCAPADE (S Maskiell) and THE SCOUSE DEVIL (J Borrett) were held up for a clear run shortly after straightening until approximately the 50m mark.

RACE 3 – S.B. FREELAND TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1100 METRES – 10 RUNNERS

SPECIAL HONEY (J Borrett) was slow away and lost several lengths at the start.

Also approaching the 800m mark SHEEDS (K Dodge) was momentarily steadied by its rider when MR SOHO (S Snell) shifted in slightly.

At about the 250m mark MIDNIGHT BREW (C Kingston) was momentarily held up for a run behind ESSEMBEE D Pires (a)) and had to switch in over this horse’s heels to obtain a clear run.

All bets made prior to 3.42 pm to be paid less twenty cents in the dollar on the face value of the win ticket and fifteen cents in the dollar on the value of the place ticket.

Approaching the 1900m mark CHOKITO (S Maskiell) was carried a little wider when SWEET MAMA (K Sanderson) shifted out and brushed with this gelding. From this point onwards CHOKITO commenced to over-race and raced three wide for the majority of the event.

Leaving the 1800m mark DALWINA (S Snell), who was over-racing at the time, raced awkwardly on the heels of runners in front switched out to obtain clear running and in doing so inconvenienced SWEET MAMA (K Sanderson) who had to be checked by its rider off the heels of CHOKITO (S Maskiell). Stewards spoke with Jockey Snell in regard to this incident and advised him that notwithstanding the fact that he was placed very awkwardly, he is to make far greater effort to ensure that he does not inconvenience other runners.

At about the 700m mark COUNTESS SOPHIE (S McFerran) clipped the heels of POPULAIRE (B McCoull) and blundered. When questioned Jockey McFerran stated that she was instructed to make every effort to keep this mare in touch with the field and not to allow it to get too far back. For this reason she allowed her mount to roll forward at about the 700m mark and underestimated the distance between herself and POPULAIRE. Stewards noted her comments and advised her to take every care to ensure she negotiates her way safely.

ASDIC (D Keating (a)) was momentarily crowded for galloping room rounding the home turn when DALWINA (S Snell) shifted in.

CHOKITO (S Maskiell) shifted ground outwards under pressure over the concluding stages of the event.

A pre-race Veterinary inspection of BUFFALO LASS revealed bleeding from the off nostril.

RACE 6 – CARLTON DRAUGHT HANDICAP – 1600 METRES – 14 RUNNERS

Stewards questioned Jockey S Tsaikos (TUZLA) in regard to this horse’s apparent improved performance. Jockey Tsaikos stated that as a result of this horse not responding in its previous races when raced from off the pace his instructions today were to lead on the horse and this, in his opinion, accounted for the horse’s improved performance. Stewards noted his explanation. Trainer G McCulloch was advised that Stewards expect to see similar tactics adopted in future and will monitor this horse’s future performance.

OTAKIMAN (S Snell) laid in under pressure in the straight.

Jockey P Michaelides the rider of MUCHO DINERO accidentally dropped his whip at about the 100m mark.

Stewards fined Jockey Michaelides $250 and placed an embargo on him not to accept rides at less than 54kg effective midnight 29th December 2002 and until such time as he can satisfy Stewards that he is able to ride at weights below 54kg.

BILLIE THE DRILLER (S Tsaikos) jumped awkwardly, threw its head up at the start and lost some ground.

Approaching the 400m mark FLAMIN’ EMMA (J Borrett) had to be restrained off the heels of OH SO GRAND (K Lewis) when this horse rolled in marginally.

At about the 100m mark BLETCHINA (S Maskiell) who was racing behind CLEVER JEEL (C Kingston), switched out to obtain a clear run when CLEVER JEEL commenced to shift outwards under pressure, and in doing so carried ELUSIVE LASS (K Sanderson) a little wider and as a result LITTLE EM (S Snell) was inconvenienced for a number of strides over the concluding stages and had to be checked by its rider. Both Jockey Kingston and Jockey Maskiell were shown the video of the incident and advised to take more care in future when shifting ground.

A swab sample was taken from the winner of the event CLEVER JEEL (Trainer Gary White).
